FWIW, I am sure I've used a socket on one of those before but it was on the ground (i've only ever swapped them out while swapping in later model transmissions) but I'm sure had a deep enough socket to pile the wires in and ctach the end of the hex portion with the socket.....
Thanks - After thinking about it some more, I suppose a 3/8" drive crow foot on an extension would do the trick, but I had no luck finding one big enough - looks like somewhere between 28~30 mm. The shifter tower is dry, as is the rear seal - when that thing leaks oil goes EVERYWHERE!
