hmmmmm, is right. That would be pretty bitchin. I dunno what I'm going to be doing but if I'm heading to the Carlisi meet and the dyno and Pocono.... I'm either crashing @ Kyle's and taking up his garage or getting a hotel somewhere.... yeah hotel, I've reached the point were I don't do the Motel route. Not to mention I can usually slip the guy at the front desk a $20 to keep the 7 out front all night ;)
Lets see how next Thurs goes - day off, taking it as such, and my new d/s should be here by then so I can get the 6-spd in.... for the third time. Looks like I'm definately heading to the carlisi meet though which is pretty badass. Dave, I'll let ya know what goes on as far as hooking up beforehand.... but I may be in PA for a few days prior |
I'd like to see the fd get on the ball...can't bitch much..mine's a dust collector at the moment..I know iknow..ima slacker.but I do only have 150 buck's in my fd ... complete. Rofl awsome huh?

|
dude!!! how the heck are ya?? havent talked in forevers!!
|
Get back to work you lazy bum and get us some updates!
|
Been busy as all hell. Actually trailered the FC out to Daves this morning to tear apart the trans and figure out one last glitch. Left the car out there and we're working on it.
There's your update ;) This trans will happen goddamnitalltohell. 3-4th we're so silky smooth and combined with the 4.3 rear, @ 2k in 3rd gear you step on the gas and the car just wanted to get up and GO! Anywho, yeah, I've got a ton of pics of the trans, the mount, the custom slave, custom driveshaft etc etc etc. Yeah, it's pretty awesome, errr it will be when this last little problem gets solved. |
good to hear, i was going through withdrawal because you had us all going cold turkey with your updates lol
did you happen to see david hayes car there? or did they fix it already? |
Not that I saw. I thought David was a Kilo Racing guy, did he convert?
Yeah I know about the updates. Between getting way too busy and having to walk away from the car before I shot it, updates have been few and far between. Sorry I've got that "other" build thread to start for the 'vert too...... which has been ignored lately. |
David had a problem with his radiator while he was in Pa. for the carlisi meet (that you should have been at) I believe he was able to epoxy the leak and drive back down to Lorton Va. for the auto train back to Florida.
|
Ah, cool.
Yeah I know, I should've been there for that meet, even if it was with my truck. I just couldn't get away from work though. Absolutley sucked. You guys had awesome weather, I'm sure it was a blast. You should come up for the Rotary Factory meet in sept though |
you have another build thread??? dude put a link up! my internet ritual is, check fs sections on 7 club, check tuesday night thread on 8 club, check brians build thread on rcc, mail, fb sleep lmao! i dont wander from that path unless theres a very good reason
|
I've got another build, but not a thread about it yet. Calm yourself Dave, it's just the 'vert..... for which I still need to get out to you to snag that engine ;)
Nothing special this time around. Rebuild the N/A engine, Abdul's old rx8 seats.... which might actually go in on Sunday. Swap out the molding, the tails, the markers, Atihun hood, relocate the battery and replace with that miata one... by the way, where did you get that again? stereo, and go through the suspension this winter. If I start driving it alot, I may go for a TII/RE..... maybe a renisis swap, 6-spd trans (if we can make the other work.... which we will) and rear with a Torsen. If I do boost the girl, it'll be a W2A setup with a decent... probably a GT32 turbo. But that's getting ahead of myself. I'd want the FD done before that and who knows when that'll get done. Gotta get that torque curve to masturbate to posted up first ;) |
haha nice, i still get excited when you build cars :) doesnt matter how tuned down they supposedly are, you still shoot for the roof
and i have to look through my favorites i have i saved i just dont remember were i put it lol ill pm you the link when i find it i actually like the battery a lot, ive had it sit for a while, it completely died on me, i drove it around for a weekend and its now back to normal haha, not bad for a little battery |
I'm still living THROUGH Brian and his FC, lol. Between the other two FCs in my driveway, the nursery build out and the rx8.. my project book is full up til after October!
Looking forward to that vert build thread though! |
Quote:
Yeah yeah yeah Dave, egg me on a little with the build :smilielol5: It'll be de-tuned this time around. Ported, sweet exhaust etc etc. Nothing to outrageous. Should net ~150ish rwhp..... for now ;) Quote:
Bill, you, MC & I still need to pick a date when the FC is dyno ready and not just ready to be a dyno queen. You know, get up on her thrown and do nothing but pout all day as she usually does. I've got a list going - The Prissy Little Attention Whore Shit List as I've dubbed it. When that's done, we need to pick a date and get out there. Maybe the 25th? You guys can hang around for the Rotary Factory Meet? I'll get the thread up this weekend hopefully. I've got a ton of errands to run today, then I'm going to pull the engine. Tomorrow is dedicated to installing the RX8 seats, and hopefully getting the interior back together? Doubt it though. I'm planning on a full 8 hours to do the seats, probably more. I love the RX8 seats, but they're a motherfucker to install. No, they don't just bolt in  |

Quote:
if im feeling very ambitious i might also take on an rb25det swap on another car for someone :) Quote:

idk what your talking about mine bolted right in  |
25th of Sept? Cant... got a BBQ that day, lol... I'm not sure when I'll have a weekend free honestly until after the new year!!
|
So I got a call from Dave yesterday, he's got the tranny all sorted out. He's probably got the thing back in the car already, and even if I have to hitch-hike, I'm getting out there tomorrow. So unless I'm to busy playing with my new, ah, shifter, I'll be able to update this thing with actual pics, and then hopefully an auto-z vid on Sunday... WOOT!
|
So yeah, Anyone in the area heading out to Daves tomorrow?
|
Just one question B... What's an 'auto-z?'
I would but my car is going to the shop today and I'm not even in your state! :leaving: |
That's good news B. Glad to hear it's coming along. Finally got mine fired up and timing dialed in a little better...then the kinks started showing up. Cooling system adjustments this weekend FTW! Might actually move on its own power this weekend. WOOT!
|
I cant make it just limped my truck home from vacation (major ps leak) post up some pics/progress and don't shoot it with the new toys.

My pump is fine but I busted a return line and lost about a gallon of fluid from S.C. to Va. works ok but a pita to fill up every 40-50 miles or risk losing steering. waiting on a new line since my fittings rusted out but the good news is I think I'm gonna pick up another rotary
|
Ah, I see. I much better failure than the one I had. My PS pump started sounding like a supercharger. Thought, fuck it, I don't have the time, steering still works great, I'll deal with it when it becomes a problem. Well about a week later I'm driving up rt 57 which is a pretty bitchin backroad with about a one mile stretch of strait before a turnoff about 5 miles from my old house. Driving down the straight I see the car that was behind me, back off. I'm looking in the rearview and see what looks like trailing smoke.... thinking that's wierd... huh... I think I should check that out. I get to the end of the straight, go for the 135* turn and no PS at all... that's a TOUGH wheel to turn too, 31" mudders on a worm gear box BLOWS! A little offrd action becuase I couldn't make the turn and finally get to a safe spot. Open the hood, get a puff of smoke in the face, see PS fluid EVERYWHERE and the pulley, with the front bearing and shaft basically got ejected out of the pump body and was resting against the rad. Single serp belt, I wasn't going anywhere.
Lesson learned, or so I thought. About a year later the converter brick started rattling around. THought, whatever, I don't have the time, I'll fix it later. A week or so later the brick broke loose and plugged the exhaust, so far down on power it was embarassing. |
6-spd tranny update
4 Attachment(s)
So I figured that I wold wait until I had something to actually report before doing so........
THE 6-SPD IS IN AND WORKING LIKE A FUCKING TOP!!! One minor drivetrain vibration to work out and it's on the run right now. The math and planning paid off WONDERFULLY. With a 7800 rpm, the top of 2nd is 60 mph and I can get there in LOW 4 seconds. The shifts from there out are right on top of each other, you don't have to bounce the engine of the rev limiter to stay in the peak powerband, the shifts are smooth... silky smooth, and the car pulls like a freight train.... it's incredible. I can't wait to get this bitch on the track.... 2 weeks from now. So, here's what we got.... here's the super secret tranny in it's entirety compared with the stock Type-R shitbox. Length is the key here. It's been the length that has kept so many people from putting these trannies into 7's. Comparision Shot http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601184 Here is the top of the Type-R box http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601184 Here is the 6-spd http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601184 The two things to note here are 1) the size and shape of the shifter top. The tunnel MUST be notched forward in order to accomodate the shifter tower. 2) That the shifter is off-center in comparision to the output shaft. The 6-spd is on center. This poses a problem when mounting the fucker as the shifter will be slightly off center in the tunnel. Nothing can be done about this and in fact, the tunnel needs to be notched towards the passenger side as well. http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601184 Here is the 6-spd mounted up to the engine and ready to be stabbed in..... but wait, there is yet another problem that needs to be addresses here.... that's right, the slave cylinder. There have been a few of the stock RX8 trannies mated to 13-B's in the past and in talking to 2 of the people that have done this in race cars and REPU's, the RX8 slave will not mate up becuase of the oil filter pedastal. I was going to get a slave just becuase I generally have to see something for myself, but decided that it was an unnecessary $80 expense, so I went with plan A. |
4 Attachment(s)
Plan A is to modify the slave cylinder to fit the RX8 bellhousing. The guys that I had spoken to built an adapter plate. Thier reasoning was that if the the slave ever failed, they could just buy a new slave and bolt it on. In looking at the bellhousing in the FC to begin with, I saw a problem with this. The bolts would be VERY difficult to get to. As you can see in the pic, it would shift the bolts farther forward, sure you could unbolt the plate, but I had a better idea. When slaves fail, they fail from seals. Very few times do the cylinders themselves go bad, so lets mod the fucking cylinder shall we?
Here we go, the bolt holes are close, but they won't work, the cylinder will extend too far and I was afraid of it leaking out. http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601968 So I went ahead and cut the ears off of the stock TII slave and jigged the thing up to where I thought it should be. Bolted on one of the cut off ears and tack welded the thing on. Then I took it off, finished off the welding being CAREFUL not to penetrate the cylinder to the point where it would effect the seal. http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601968 Bolted it back on and repeated for the forward facing ear. http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601968 Tranny all bolted up with the slave and a new starter. I searched and searched for a starter before I decided to go with one from autobone. I know I know I fucking HATE autobone but.... all the other starters that I found even with my wholesale accounts were in the $2-300 range with a limited warranty. From 90 days for the most expensive bosch, to a 3 year for the napa unit. Theis POS from Auto-bone was something like $120 with a lifetime warranty. Now, I'm ignoring the Lifetime warranty arguement from Napa... everything that I have bought for my truck with a lifetime warranty from napa has failed, and failed FAST. Hopefully, this starter lasts a little longer than the average 7 months that the LIFETIME Napa parts seem to last. Time will tell http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285601968 |

The next issue is of course a driveshaft. As you can see from the pictures, the stock TII shaft will not work. It's just a touch too long. Stock and the custom AL one I had built.
http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603231 http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603231 Now lets mount the bitch up. Before I swapped the trans I took a BUNCH of measurements off the u-joints of the original shaft thinking that I would be using that. I took the measurements under the assumption that the stock shaft would fit. Obviously it didn't so all my measurements were useless. So when building the mount, I had to guess as to where the tranny would be. I was close, but close doesn't cut it when it comes to drivetrain vibrations, we'll get into that a little later on, probably tonight as I do need to get something else done today. So the mounting. I didn't want to solid mount the trans and when looking through my cache of parts I came across a spare set of FC rear control arm bushings from Energy suspension. I went to my stock of steel and found some tube that the bushing would fit snuggly into... SCORE! Poly trans mounts :D So, first thing is to build a mount to the chassis. Pretty easy to imagine how this will go together. http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603231 Now the mount that goes between the two and bolts to the tranny was a little harder to built, but here's what we've got. Not bad and very strong http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603231 |

So, after I got the bitch installed and went for a drive, it was apparent that there was a problem with the tranny. I called Dave up and made arrangements for me to tow my prissy little attention whore down to him so he could figure out what was up with it. After a short amount of time I got a VM from him, happier than a little boy getting his first blowjob saying, Brian, we have a SHIFTING 6-SPD TRANNY!
So I got driven out there ASAP and here's the result. My prissy little attention whore awaiting her new implant http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603677 Good ass shot showing off the fuel cell :reddevil: http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603677 Jordan getting the last few of the bolts in.... mainly just wanted a pic of the back of the shirt ;) http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603677 This pic was taken before the trans went back in.... can anyone see anything wrong with this? It was a source of the vibration and a reason that I wish I had built my own mounts and NOT bought the Banzai racing mounts. Kevin, if you're reading this, make sure that the angle of the mounts you're building offset the engine properly, AND get the angles proper. http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285603677 |
