Got the bitch buttoned up, checked the fluids, got her on the grnd and went for a drive....... HOLLY FUCKING HELL does she pull HARD. The 6-spd shifted great, the car ran SMOOTH, the ratios in the trans were spot on and the 4.3 rear was an awesome addition as well........ there was only one problem.... drivetrain vib in 4th-6th around 60mph and up. It's exactely like my truck when unloaded and hard on the gas.... the angles of the drivetrain are wrong and the shaft/u-joints are out of snyc.

Remember that pic above showing the engine rotated? Banzai mounts, so... I busted out the hoist, pulled the cup out of the driveres side, shimmed the passenger side, rotated the drivers side to the bottome of the adjustment, and the passenger side to the top of the adjustment range and got it to .1* with the rest of the car. Cool, that pulled the shifter over a little more as well.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285604652

Next problem was the angle relative to the pinion shaft. The pinion is offset to the passenger side in the FC. This means that the tranny needs to move over as well. Fuuuuuuuck, more notching of the tranny tunnel. Not very fun with a full interior but it's done and over with. Now, the tranny is so far over to the passenger that the original mount won't work. Not a big deal, build it once, I'll build it again. Now that's done.

Next problem is the angle of the engine trans. When I originally took my measurements they were off the u-joints becuase I though I was going to be re-using the orginal shaft. With that out I was forced to get it to where I though it should be.

Here's where it looks like it should be from the bottom. When I built my strut toer brace with the torque arm, these two points were lined up. They clearly aren't.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285604652

So I adjusted and moved and got it closer, took this pic,

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1285604652

moved it some more and got it spot on. Pulled a few angles from the tranny output, the yokes on the driveshaft at both ends & the pinion flange. They were within what I had understood to be acceptable measurements, built the mount, factored in some movement, and went for a drive. What started out as a vibration that could shake teeth loose, is down to what feels like a truck with mud tires on the highway feels like.... a constant little hum. MUCH better, but still needs some adjusting. I'm almost out of room regarding moving the tranny, I MAY have to drop the pinion flange down some to get some angle back.

Next step is to find the centerline of the car and with some lazer lights and plumb-bobs, get the offset of output shaft, the driveshaft, and the pinion, as well as the angles relative to horizontal and send them off to my driveshaft guy. He'll throw all that info into Dana-Spicers computer and see what needs to go where to get rid of the vibe. Gut says that becuase the tranny is a little longer, the pinion needs to come down slighty. Guys who lift trucks are all to familiar with this, except they go the other way with thier pinions.

If all that fails, it looks like it'll be a double cardon steel driveshaft... which would really piss me off.

So, that's where we are now. This tranny ROCKS! Can't thank Dave and his crew @ Speed1 enough for thier efforts. Without them, this NEVER would've happened. Anyone who can build a custom tranny is tops in my book. Thanks again Dave, I owe ya huge! This thing kicks ass, I wish it weren't raining today.

Just when I started to think that maybe you got too old to work on your car. Bravo ol chap, bravo :icon_tup:

MaczPayne 09-27-2010 07:41 PM

Wow. Can't wait to see how this does in the auto-x :D

WE3RX7 09-27-2010 08:04 PM

Horseshit! Thats all this is....

now, go build me one.

Me neither. The thing should be damn near perfect.... 6-spd, 4.3 torsen, 400+rwhp, sequentials....

If you're serious, lemme know ;) You're on your own for mounting the motherfucker though..... Banzai mounts and all

Arg, if it wasn't for the trip to Sevenstock, alcohol and strippers for my birthday this past weekend, AND my car heading into the body shop. I'd be all over this right now.

B,

Would you mind taking some shots on how your exhaust is hung on the pretty, pretty, princess?

I need some motivation.

Nismo 09-29-2010 02:12 PM

Damn kind of happy I am building my own mounts! Thanks for the heads up, definitely high on the drivers side, or low on the passenger side... I will keep this in mind thanks for that Brian!

I will post pictures when I build mine in the new Fab Section.

Meh, I think that we'll ALWAYS know how to build this tranny..... third time being the charm and all

no no no man.... Keep the pan LEVEL in the car. The problem with the Banzai mounts is they want to tweak the engine counter-clockwise as seen looking down the e-shaft from the front of the car and from looking down on the engine from the top of the car. The engine is in a position that is really counter-intuitive

incubus 09-30-2010 01:18 AM

Oh man. One day I'll read through all of this + your other build threads too. You're definitely my favorite builder that I've seen. Your car looks great. Keep up all the good work!

Sharingan 19 09-30-2010 09:54 AM

I've spent the last 3 days reading this (woulda been 2 if you had a secretary or a blackberry ...) Simply AMAZING!

Big fan of custom stuff, but w/o welding skills I'm somewhat limited. I had a pretty good idea what I wanted to do when I resto-mod my car but thanks to this, I might have to re-evaluate that plan....time to look into some welding classes....as soon as I finish these other classes.

jtbshaw 09-30-2010 01:58 PM

Good work, as always, B. If I'm not mistaken, you will have to raise the pinion to accomadate the shorter shaft. Of course, just as you mentioned, this is coming from years of building rock crawlers and 4x4s.

And, before you say it...I'll get a build thread up soon with my chit. Just been travelling a good bit with work yo.

Todd B.

I would really rec learning how to weld. I'm not sure classes are really needed though. I never took them. I was given a few quick lessons with a MIG welder when I was working as a mechanic. When I left that job and had some shit to weld up, I went to Sears and bought a welder. I literally burned that one up and finally bought a MillerMatic 175.

When I started the planning for this build I new that I wanted to do alot out of AL so I went out and bought the TIG welder. Plugged it in and went hog wild. I needed some help with that, no one I knew knows how to TIG so I bought a few books, did some research, spoke to a marine fabricator that we do some business with and stopped by his shop a few times and always re-directed the conversations... after that it was just practive practice practice.

Do it man, you won't regret it.

It's all sorts of wierd angles man. The tranny is longer, so the shaft is shorter..... it's bass ackwards from lifting a rig... or so I think. I dunno, I still need to get the digital angle finder out and get the data to send off to the driveshaft manifacturer.

haahahha... you should be jealous, there was an S5 TII at this weekends auto-x. He was traveling most of the course in 1st bouncing the thing off the rev limiter while I pulled out of the gate and was in 2nd before the first turn and stayed there the entire time :D It was epic... the ratios are fucking awesome!

TitaniumTT 10-12-2010 09:35 PM

Fast forward to 2:30 and 10:00

TitaniumTT 10-12-2010 09:51 PM

I was hoping to get this for Johnson showing all 6 gears but instead all we get is a bunch of wind noise.... but we do see how fast we get through the first 3 gears. Rev limiter is still set a little low, top of 2nd is 57, top of 3rd is 75 I think? Either way

Damn, really winds up fast with that trans! Must be an ass-tucker with the sequentials thrown into the mix!

WE3RX7 10-13-2010 09:14 PM

Meh - I'm thinking you need a 7spd and another 30hp. Those videos aren't enough to get the feel for it, guess you'll need to store the car at my place for a few months and think about it....

It really is, the 4.3 rear helps alot as well. Even when I was running the stock trans the 4.3 helped a bunch, especially in 4th and 5th. I love the ratio's, they are perfect. Need to dial in the front suspension a little more. What are you running Johnson? And what are your auto-x alignments like? Hoping to make another event this weekend

I am looking for a place to store the girl for 3+ months starting around Decemnber..... but I may have to take the MoTeC with me ;)

I'm not running anything spectacular - 4.10 S4 TII rear, S5 TII trans. The auto-x's around here are typically 2nd gear courses and I've bounced of the red only a few times. I ran -2deg on the old car, and maybe -1 in the rear. I left the caster and toe alone at factory specs.

New car is getting a corner balance and alignment suited to road courses. I might change only a few things when I take it to an auto-x, but that's about it.

I'm not too concerned with fine adjustments yet, gotta work on my driving skills first, haha. I've come a long way since 5 years ago, that's for sure :)

Cool, thanks. I generally run a little more camber in the front, and a touch toe out front and rear.

What spring rates are you running and what for a sway bar? It seems as if my car is plowing a little.....

The courses around here are a little tighter. There are some you can get away with in first if your rev limit is high enough. I'll be interested to see what I can do this weekend if I can get the time off.

MaczPayne 10-15-2010 03:07 PM

I'm running no rear swaybar and the factory TII up front, as well as 8k F/ 6k R rates. I had good traction coming out of corners and turn-in was pretty good. This is of course just my impression haha.

Nothing a haltech can't fix ;)

TitaniumTT 10-15-2010 11:07 PM

Yeah, and actually, haltech is trying so hard that they are actually using the same ECU connectors as MoTeC now...... take the driveshaft?

WE3RX7 10-17-2010 08:43 AM

I've got extra T2 shaft and tranny, lol... wont take but an hour to swap that back in there, lol....

You wouldnt want it just sitting for 3 months anyway... somebody would need to get in it, run it through the gears every few hours :)

2gslse 10-17-2010 06:04 PM

Count me in for torture testing too!!! maybe we can start the ignition coil testing while Brian is away. We may as well leave the car at my house since I don't have an FC to clutter up my driveway.

last year he had the bright idea of taking the car apart for restoration at thanksgiving and be ready for DGRRX but had too many other projects on his plate to finish it on time
