Yea I trashed a set of bearings because of purple power, it attacks the coating or absorbs into the bearing and just destorys the bearing less then a 1000 miles on the motor siezed it.

End of story purple power can suck a whole bag of dicks.

Im also curious why your not using solid corners is that super secret titanium red bull fueled knowledge

TitaniumTT 02-18-2012 09:05 AM

Wow.... I dunno what the eff we're using, but it can't be purple power. We've never had a motor come back so short like that. I pulled them out, they look and feel fine, the only soaked for like 24 hrs, but Chris has said some of the really nasty ones he's let soak for 3 days and the carbon just falls off.

I'm wondering if it isn't shit that's getting caught in the rotors and infecting the oil system?

Atkins don't seal all that great from the start and CAN have starting issues. The ones from RX7 specialties are supposed to be VERY tough on plates.

The more I think about the more I think I'm just going to rock stockers. The only reason they broke was because I banged the plates. The rotors that go in will be clearanced so hopefully this doesn't happen again. Basically the engien that I build next for the coupe will be rockin' a super DUPER secret turbo if the BNR's don't at least get back what I made stock. So I'm building that engine in anticipation of over 500wheel. Rotors will be balanced, lightened, and clearanced so touching plates shouldn't happen and the need for soild corners shouldn't exist.

Raksj04 02-18-2012 01:11 PM

I think the guy who are having problems with purple power didn't dilute it. The MSDS says it has Complete Solubility in Water. I am thinking some people have been using it straight up, which may lead to the pitting.

Just found out that the guy you bought the block from swapped all the matching accessories off before he sold it to you hahahaha

Project Junkyard Turbo 'Vert continues to move along at a snails pace... mainly becuase I got held up on the dyno till 7 or so tonight, and I'm still trying to get some shit welded up for a different and believe it or not more time sensitive project.

So.... with 58 days left... here's what we've got accomplished.... NOT MUCH!

The car did get a bath and get moved inside... as you requested DJ, here are some pics of the beaut inside.

I was going to compound the car down to get a really good idea of the body work that needs to be done, but there are more pressing matters at hand than spending a few hours with a buffing wheel.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1329887427

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1329887427

The interior is in great shape

For some reason, I can't remember why, I pulled the steering whell off the car. We have a fork truck here that we use to tow cars around with... well, Kyle was running at a high rate of speed and I was steering.... and then the steering wheel was in my lap while I was aimed at a moving fan dropping a car off :smilielol5: Almost added a few more things to the todo list for this project.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1329887427

But the body is in really good condition. Only a few spots of rust and overall a good solid car. She should roll nicely when all is done.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1329887427

And of course the Atihun hood that I picked up about 2 yrs ago. As odd as it is, I will have 3 RX7's, 2 FC's and 1 FD, all with the same basic aftermkt hood. The one on the coupe that I built from a stock AL hood. This Atihun hood... and a few months ago, maybe a yr, who knows, I picked up a carbon Fibre Mazdaseed hood for the FD. Basically the Atihun guys took the vent from the FD MazdaSpeed hood and molded it onto an FC hood. Then used that as a plug to build this hood. It's by far my favorite aftermkt hood.... second to the one I built of course

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1329887427

Regardless, there is some body work in this cars future before DGRR.... so if anyone wants to help, we'll be spraypainting at the lodge on Friday night, hoping it dries before Sat morning

So I planned to have the engine built over the weekend, a few problems came up with that... my girlfriend was in town and believe it or not, I would've rather spent the better part of sunday and Monday with her than here at the shop. There was also some time lost in sourcing new rotors, figuring out what to do with bearings, etc etc. Came into work on Sunday ready to rock and roll clearancing the rotors and it all went to hell. I had literally 125 side seals to choose from and I had to dig into the stash I had bought for my car for 2 of them :banghead: Oh well, not like I need them anytime soon and I always order 14 so I can screw 2 of them up and not worry.

Regardless, that took a lot of time up on Sunday and a few people dropped by the shop which ate up more time and we all know how that goes. I did manage to get the rotors all set and clearanced though. They are ready to rock and roll. The other thing that screwed me, I actually came into work on Monday to build the engine, but when I opened my MazdaComp box and started sorting things out, I quickly found that they didn't send the inner coolant seals in the same box. They arrived on Monday after I had already left for PA... so they are sitting in CT right now. Our engine builder used the last set maybe 2 days prior. Oh well. It's not like there isn't a bunch of other shit that needs to get done

Here you can see the organization, the old rotors on the left, look at the left most rotor... yeah, someone reused that. It's mate isn't much better. I would've thrown both those out. So, if anyone wants some S4 TII rotors, $50 each. Came out of an engine that did >400wheel supposedly.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1329887969

On the right you can see the rotors that I plan on using. I was kinda stuck here since I'm pretty deadset on using the stock flywheel. So my only choice was S4 n/a rotors. Actually not a bad choice at all given what the car will be used for. So yeah, here's to at least 3 hi-comp turbo motors I'll be tuning in 1 year, 2 of which I'm building myself.... kewl.

I have started working on the mani's, stripping them down and welding shit shut, welding shit on, and things of that nature. Plan now is get as much of the mani's prepped as possible in the next two days. I'm leaving right from work on Friday to go back to CT via NY to spend a night with my girl, pick up my seals over the weekend, Do some work on the never ending landi project, and a little fab on my car, then leave CT Monday morning for work on Monday. Build the engine Monday night pretty much complete, save probably the UIM and the TB.

Then pull the left fender and the dash, get the engine in and start on the wiring. The wiring willl definately take some time. I have to go back to CT on 3/4, but I have that Monday off.... there will be a lot of wiring done that day.... hopefully.

I'd like to get the engine in the car with 1/2 of the W2A intercooler done, the bottom half. So we can close the hood and see what kind of clearance I have to work the top. Should be really interesting..... anywho... as usual I'm like 5 steps ahead of myself.

the junkyard you shop at has better crapola than any I go to.

ps... I'll call on my way home tomorrow

Back in November @ a PCA event I missed a shift @ 143 mph down the front straight and over-revved the hell out of the engine.
My Haltech would have prevented that...

TitaniumTT 02-22-2012 10:40 AM

If by not allowing the car to make enough power to get to that speed.... then yes, it would've  ;)

By missed shift I mean was sitting @ 8k in 5th, went for 6th, missed and hit fourth. Not like I aimed for 6th, stayed in neutral, dropped clutch and hammereed gas.... oh no... this was way stupider

Haltechs have a setting that ensures I don't miss shifts. It was first on the e6k. :suspect:

missing shifts rather the motor go instead of the clutch.

i also like your organization and layout of your rotors, i've built a couple motors but i've never seen candy canes go in there must be a turbo thing:rofl:

huh? How do you do that?

WE3RX7 02-26-2012 05:10 PM

I playing with an o-ring in the tray and set it into the rotor without the spring under it... not assembling just seeing how well it fit. If you've never put the tray in with no spring underneath, its a PITA to get it back out.. had it 70% lifted out and it just snapped...

TitaniumTT 02-29-2012 11:39 PM

Ouch... that sucks.... I've had issues getting corner seals out without springs under them.. I just gave up... I always put a spring under it whenever I clearance rotors now.

Been a few days since an update so I figure it's about time. Got slammed this week woth work work so not much has been done... sadly... I still have yet to build the engine because, well, all 4 rotary stands at the shop are in use  No seriously... 3 engines waiting to go in and the fourth is in the engine room getting torn down......

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1330576894

It's not like there is a shortage of shit to do on the car however, so tonight Chris stayed late with me to start tearing the car apart for the wiring and general cleaning of the front half of the car. Here's what we started with

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1330576894

Yeah... what do you want, she sat outside for 18 months. Kyle started cleaning up the pass side and it looks like everything will come back pretty nicely... I'm pleased with that. But... to build something like this... first it all needs to come apart... damnit. At least that's the way I do it when I install an ECU on my schedule. It just makes it so much easier and cleaner to pull out everything that isn't being used, and go from there. Since I plan on doing the same wire hiding thing that I did on my car, except cleaner becuase there won't be nearly the same amount of electronic trickery, I need to get at the front harness. I'm going to try to leave it in the car this time though, because it is a bitch getting that harness through the firewall and seated properly. Plus this car is retaining the power windows, power doors, power mirrors that it had. In my car I was adding the PW and PDL's so it was as totally different story. So after everything was taken out and the harness removed from the front half, this is what's left over that needs to be cleaned.... yeah....

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1330576894

At anyrate, there are a handfull of wires that need to go, and a few that need to be added. I plan on using the A/C Fan relay to power the electric fan, and I'm not sure if I want the pump for the w2a intercooler to just be key on, or have it's own relay. I'm thinking relay but I need to dive into the haltech software and see if I have the outputs left over... I think I do. The wires that are leaving the harness are all the check connectors, the air-bypass relay, the drivers washer controls, all the coil wires, the CAS wires and a few of the tach leads.

The wires moving are going to be the low oil level, stock temp and pressure senders for the stock gauges, the neutral switch and the reverse switch. Those are moving over to the engine harness. Soooooo it's probably not the easiest, but it's definitely the cleanest.... pull the dash and run the wires over to where they belong. I've got access to a few other harnesses, so I'm hoping that all the wires that I need to remove and relocate I can pull out of the other harness.... so all the wire colors will remain the same, even if they're not in the same connector. That's the way i like to do it anyway.

This entire harness, the engine harness is garbage and will be pitched. Battery is getting relocated so no need for any of the big wires. All the others are either being removed totally or relocated.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1330576894

Here's the front harness.... this can be thinned out considerable. Some wires shortened, and some wires added. The only place the harness will be seen is where it exits the firewall and dives into the wheel well. The PS harness will remain, but that's it. And the fuse bvox will be relocated to where the trailing coil once lived.

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1330576894

Goal is to have the car totally wired by the end of next weekend. Then it's just the engine harness and the mechanical side of things..... not too much time left but I'm pretty sure I've got enough as long as I don't have any huge part delays.... those could kill the whole thing.

Oh... and if anyone knows of or has an S5 TII throttle body... I'm looking for one. Don't need the TPS, found one of those, but I do need the throttle body itself.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... so building a car in short order means taking it apart first??????

http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_foru...1&d=1330577586

Yeah.... by the end of tomorrow night that interior will be stripped clean and the only thing remaining will be a lightly held front harness with a bunch of wires being pulled out and tossed in the garbage..... ugh... what have I gotten myself into. The girlfriend is already getting in a state.... I can't wait till the first 3 weeks of April

rxspeed7 03-01-2012 01:16 AM

Screw engine stands! I hate em. Have a nice work bench we assemble our motors on then pick em up off the table with the hoist and put em in.

Car is looking good though. It's always nice to start off with a good un-molested car.

TitaniumTT 03-01-2012 02:26 AM

I'm too old for that shit..... and you wonder why your back is all eff'ed up

Duffman692002 03-01-2012 10:52 PM

Love this thread, makes me wanna get back on the wire tuck on the ol fb but then I remember how much I hate doing it... One of these days...

Looking forward to seeing it at Deals. :icon_tup:

rxspeed7 03-01-2012 11:18 PM

ehhh... its too nice to be able to sit down and build motors. It hurts my back more to stand over a engine stand and assemble a motor.

WE3RX7 03-01-2012 11:24 PM

I'm betting at least a LITTLE respray will take place in that engine bay.. the lower rails never survive brake fluid leaks and batter acid over the course of 20 years...

I must have made him sad.

TitaniumTT 03-05-2012 08:42 PM

Har har...... har har..... She's gonna get more and more pissed at me until DGRR comes... I can tell

TitaniumTT 03-05-2012 08:56 PM

Soooooooooooooo update................

I'm still taking shit OUT of the car.... although today was very productive... about 9 hours of wiring was had and in that time I got everything stripped out that wasn't being used.... think about all the wiring for the stock headrest speakers, the volume controls, the amp controls..... all that jazz is now gone.

I also started stripping back the front harness to take out things that aren't being used, check connectors, coil triggers, CAS wiring, all that shit is out.

I also managed to get all the wires lengthened to where they need to be and then some for the Helltech.

The goal here is to have as little wiring seen as possible. There isn't nearly the electronic trickery that I have in the coupe, and 1/2 the turbo's and 1/4 of the intercooler. So the goal here is CLEAN.

For those of you who know the FC wiring, you know that there are three main harnesses that wrap and contort all over the engine and the engine bay.

There is the Emissions Harness which is basically the harness that controls the engine. It hits the shock tower then head over to the engine before branching out to the AFM and the mixture adjust, and the boost gauge and all that crap.... that's all gone now.

Then there is the Engine Harness. The harness connects to the front harness and hits the Alt, the CAS, oil level etc etc etc.... That is now GONE

Then there is the front harness... pics up the Engine harness and feeds the meters, the reverse lights and the ECU for the over the top switch and the neutral switch and the subzero switch and the oil level. Then it wraps around the front of the car in a very visible way and feeds all the turn signals and what not.... this is getting stripped down to the bar minimum and hidden behind the fender and behind the front bumper.

Yes, it is alot of work and it's best to do it if you have a spare harness to butcher wires from so you're not changing colors 2x in the harness. I hate butt-splices inside harnesses anyway, but changing colors just makes it a total PITA to troubleshoot crap.

So yeah.... after 9 hours of horsing around with the wiring... here's where I'm at. A few more hours and it should be done and back where everything needs to be.

The other benefit of doing it this way is everything is plug and play. Ever wire something, then go to take something else out, and you realize that you need to cut your wires to remove it? Yeah, I learned that lesson a LONG time ago ;) After everything is wired.... it will take an hour to get the interior back together. I like that. AND most of the stock wires are retaining thier color right up to the connector that runs to the PS2000 making troubleshooting even easier.

Yes, I am an ass about my wiring.... but it has served me well so piss off.

Goal for next sunday night is to have the front harness done and tucked away where it needs to be with all the additional wires run. I usually run all new wires for things... but since time is short, I decided to re-task some existing wires that were already run.

I need a 0v and return for the intercoolers radiator temp.
Trigger for the intercoolers radiator fans
Trigger for the rad fan
Trigger for the intercoolers rad pump... although I'm thinking this will just be hooked up to a key on relay. When you turn the key on, it pumps, but shuts off when cranking. B/Y wire if anyone is interested. B/W is acc, on, and start ;)

Also want to have the main power and grounds run and the PS2000 pretty much wired to the chassis. Alot of this will depend on whether or not I get all the parts in that I require. We shall see.

Soooo yeah... actually an early night for me. 9-10 hrs of wiring and my eyes hurt. Time for food, shower, and sleep.... but first... pics....
