Ran into some clearance issues with the engine. Got... creative

Whizbang 08-08-2013 04:07 PM

in preparation for the move i had to get the car rolling. So here she is rolling! using some ghetto over sleeves until I get coilovers, and without the fenders since I had clearance issues with the giant FC tires I have.

There is a motor hiding in there too, but I'm not happy with using the stock FC mounts as it sits way too far back.

I do believe you're going to need some flares with that. You'll probably need a wider rear axle to bring the back tires out to the same track width too.

Before you move the engine, put it on some scales to check your weight balance. The FCs had it so far back to give them a 50/50 weight distribution. I'd bet it probably helps an RX-2 in the same way.

Whizbang 08-08-2013 09:03 PM

Yea i will use an FB axle in the rear and that will match the front. And wicked flares Are a must!

Right now its mounted using stock fc mounts. Might have to consider seatig position with how its turning out. The oil filter would be in your shin stock wise

The FB axle has quite a bit narrower track than the FC front. It could be compensated for with low or negative offset wheels though. The GSL-SE axles will also push the wheel out a little further than other FBs. Only way to tell for sure is to try it. :patriot:

That does sound a little far back. How did you get it in there? Remove the firewall?

Whizbang 08-08-2013 09:32 PM

Ive been using gslse stuff. Gets about an extra 20mm.

Yea trimming was required

Whizbang 08-12-2013 06:50 PM

Just properly sized wheel openings on the custom widebody you're going to have to build. 'cuz you need moar tire.

Whizbang 08-13-2013 07:53 PM

indeed. I am thinking about taking a class on how to use the "english wheel" and build my own sheel metal flares.

Something like this?

http://californiaclassix.com/Bernard...ng2-remote.jpg

Just have to setup the wheel arches to follow the chosen size 15" tire that you'll be using.

chibikougan 08-13-2013 08:52 PM

Also motorcycle fenders cut in half?

Whizbang 08-13-2013 10:30 PM

Yup a lot like that Frank. Just not sure on on wide to go. Need to find the wwheels i want to use

These?

This can also be done by cutting a radius in the stock flare.

Pull open gap to desired flare. Fill in the gap...

Whizbang 08-13-2013 11:06 PM

Eh more buldge on the top though i think. I will have to find a picture

The picture I posted was of an IMSA racecar back in the day. If you want to get extreme with the width you could always do something like the RX7 IMSA widebody for an RX2. Depends on how much rust you're fighting, it might be worth it. It would be pretty unique.

sen2two 10-30-2014 09:16 PM

Hmmm.....

I have been debating on using an FC subframe in my Rx2 as well. How much wider is the FC set up?

Another thing is, does it sit to low? The FC set up is much shorter than the Rx2 strut. Did you use some kind of spacer where it mounts to the car?
