What about the other pj?

project86 07-01-2010 12:47 AM

you mean for my car or the body work pj im doing now? im still planning on the awesome thing for my car. i just wanna try my hand at rebuilding this engine just for shits and giggles. id like to find an rx2 or 3 to put it in and race it till it blows.

haukbeeb 07-01-2010 03:54 AM

Other project is somewhat in limbo. Waiting on a compressor to run the gun and DA.
Oh wait.....are you talking about my project or project86's?

TitaniumTT 07-01-2010 05:51 AM

kyles other engine pj.

Take it from someone who's DA'ed cars with an air DA...... spend the money and get an electric DA. Your compressor will thank you ;)

hahaah Brian you do know i have been putting an air DA to cars for 2 years now right? I have a really nice Snap On DA and the compressor im buying will be plenty for it to work :):001_005:

But i just had a thought last night that i was chattin with haukbeeb about. My dad actually made me think about it.... im gonna rebuild my old engine and put it back in my car with a carb until its time for the super sweet other engine just so i can enjoy my car a little.

Im gonna buy some porting templates from pineappleracing.com and then i may buy a few porting tools from racing beat (unless someone can lend me some. I got the rotors cleaned up quite a bit yesterday and if all goes well im gonna have the irons hot tanked.

Then ill order a gasket and o ring kit from mazdatrix. i dont think it should cost me too much to do this and it will keep me happy till its time for the BIG project.

Hey man, I gotta 60 gal Cambel Hausfeld 13.5 hp air comp and after DA'ing for a while, it gets warm. Just a suggestion, though I bet the Snap-on DA you've got uses alot less CFM than the one I have.

Gotcha, makes sense. I've got too many cars and not enough time to enjoy any of them. Today was the perfect example. I had today off, as well as tomorrow and the weekend. I went in early this morning, got there @ 8 to do a bunch of side job/captaining stuff............. I just got home.... 13 hours later. Now I'll be busting ass all night
swapping a front knuckle - powdercoating it first
building a heat shield for the fuel cell
installing an amp
swapping rear ends
and washing, compounding, glazing and waxing the car. If I get on the rd by dawn I'll be happy. Otherwise, no dyno tomorrow......... again :banghead:

project86 07-01-2010 09:57 PM

Well thanks for the heads up on the DA thing. I just got my compressor today. Its only a 33 gallon but i wont be using the DA for extended periods of time back to back.

I hope i can get this engine back together with everything i need without having to spend toooo much money. i mean im not a cheap ass but things i need now that i can think of right off the bat:

Rad
Efan
Oil cooler
FPR
Carb and upper mani for it
All exhaust components
Distributor
Porting Templates/Tools
Gasket and oring kit

chibikougan 07-02-2010 10:00 AM

I still have my S5 stock Radiator I think. If so its yours. Also you can have the Holley pressure reg from the FB. I am not sure on the oil cooler though I will look.

NoDOHC 07-02-2010 12:36 PM

Are you going NA or turbo (I am guessing NA with a carb setup)?

If so, I would not buy a template, or 'tools', just get a few carbide burrs from Summit or JEGs and clean the factory ports up a little, the Pineapple Racing templates are really too big for NA. I have an engine that was proted with them and they delay the intake closing WAY too much to make any NA torque below 8,000 RPM. This is a setback because you will need a pretty special intake manifold and really good runner flow to get air to the engine at that speed.

Seriously, just clean the stock port up a little and work with that. Your WHp, torque and drivability will thank you.

Pineapple racing templates are good for turbo applications as they lower the dynamic compression ratio, allowing you to run more boost.

Don't forget that the intake runners make as much difference in power and volumetric efficiency as the ports, the only difference being that properly sized runners don't kill your low end torque (although they hurt it a little) or your idle quality.

Yes NA. I just wanted to play around with my old engine so im not really too concerned with it right now. Its more of an experimental thing for me. I do appreciate the heads up though :001_005:

I just wanna screw around until its time for the real project to begin and i thought that would be a good way to do it.

Also judging by some reading ive been doing i should ditch the 3pc apex seals for 2pc... but i dunno if i wanna spend another 300 or more for new apex seals when this is really just for shits and giggles. My seals look fine. I do need new eyelets for the corner seals though. and new corner seal springs.

project86 07-03-2010 06:05 PM

for some reason i feel really wishy washy... maybe its not just me. haha this thread started out a 13B turbo build... now its secret kinda.. except for a few people know about. and now im going to be rebuilding my own engine just for kicks.

But the more and more i look around at parts for it the more i want to do a very thorough build on it even though its not my "main project". I mean, why not do both right? Im single i have plenty of time and money to piece it together.

advice? am i crazy? going retarded? or should i just do them both? why the hell not?

TitaniumTT 07-03-2010 09:24 PM

your secret project will take a few years to complete. In all honestly, I would buy another junk FC shell.... I think one in your town is getting pretty shitted on with an LS1 soon..... for some fitmet. I'll let you know through PM's what I mean, but.. if you're going to be building an engine, do it right. Especially if you're going to be running it for a few years while you do the real build.

sounds great.. will do. I definitely wanna rebuild the right way. im already doing some research. that racingbeat carb set up is looking really tempting.

chibikougan 07-04-2010 12:04 AM

Goldy is still sitting in the alley. I can offer to make it disappear:leaving:

only problem is i have no where to keep it if i buy it. would be cool though cause im sure there are lots of parts on it i could use...

chibikougan 07-04-2010 11:48 AM

I have a lot with many spots. I don't think at this point it will cost anything. I will talk to Pat tonight see if his Paps really wants it gone.

project86 07-04-2010 05:08 PM

well let me know i guess ^^^

Here are some pictures of when i tore down my engine. Ill take some pictures of the housings and irons a little later. Honestyly everything in there looked great with the exception of the one port that i posted but ill be porting it anyway so that will be taken care of. Alot of the stuff even looked new.

Whats a good way to clean the housings? Im gonna hot tank the irons, a friend of mine has one at work. Rotors i started on. I got all the carbon off the faces but i need to get all the oil out of them.

project86 07-07-2010 11:09 PM

im gonna give degreaser a try on the housings. Probably a simple green or something similar. that shouldnt be a problem should it?

WE3RX7 07-08-2010 05:46 AM

I've used simple green on them before... power purple too... never had issues with either.

TitaniumTT 07-08-2010 07:56 AM

purple power sucks, leaves a film behind. I like simple green, wd-40, non-chlorinated brake clean

project86 07-08-2010 12:17 PM

ok cool. i cleaned out my dads garage last night so my whole eninge is in pieces on his work bench now haha. and ill be moving back home at the end of the month so ill be able to work on it as much as i want until its time for Air Force. Might even be able to clean up some of the car too as far as underneath goes. Well see.

project86 07-08-2010 08:35 PM

Well got told not to come back to work today. I put in my notice 2 days ago cause im leaving at the end of the month and they wouldnt even let me finish the month out.... kinda sucks.

On the other hand my irons are getting hot tanked tomorrow. So they should be nice and clean like.

WE3RX7 07-09-2010 05:57 AM

Power Purple, Purple power... is it the same stuff? White jug, purple lettering?? I didnt notice a film when I used it and the engine is still running today to the best of my knowledge, lol...

I do agree though, Simple Green is much better...

project86 07-09-2010 11:22 AM

simple green it is then. here are a couple more pictures of the flares. this one is almost done. just a couple annoying spots im trying to work....

NoDOHC 07-09-2010 09:03 PM

Are you using 6-port housings for your NA build?
I misunderstood.
I want to build a 6-port for power some day, but the secondary ports close too late with the sleeves out and flow too badly with the sleeves in. The 6-port is a lose-lose. You can get relatively good low end, but the high end is terrible, or you can get all high end and no low end at all. funny that this is exactly the issue that it was intended to fix...

I still wish you the best. What intake manifold and carb setup did you decide on?

Yes i have 6 port that im rebuilding just in the mean time while im waiting for my special project to become more feasible.

I think ive found a good way to solve the secondary port problem or at least make it not as bad. Well i guess it was pineapple's idea. They have inserts for the secondary sleeves that make the flow alot better. Im going to use them. Hopefully these inserts work as well as they say they do. They claim something like an 8hp gain from these alone on their website.

Ive also had my secondaries wired open since i bought the car. I had full exhaust (RB header,PS, and 2.5in pipe.) HKS intake. I was making really good, strong power at 3K rpms every time. never had an issue.

Right now im looking at getting a Weber side draft set up that Mazdatrix sells. I hope it all works out. Im gettin excited for it even though its just a temporary fix so i can drive my damn car haha. Thanks for the support DOHC.

NoDOHC 07-09-2010 10:05 PM

You need to stop talking about this secret project, you are getting everyone's curiousity up and then not saying...

project86 07-09-2010 10:29 PM

haha well... i suppose i could just let you in on it... i just wanted to keep in low cause i wasnt sure if someone i knew was on this forum and i didnt want my ideas to get stolen lol.

TitaniumTT 07-09-2010 11:02 PM

Brian knows all

project86 07-09-2010 11:42 PM

Brian knows all cause Kyle let him know all!:iagree: haha

chibikougan 07-10-2010 12:38 PM

Lookin good mangs.

project86 07-12-2010 09:35 PM

both fenders on the other kyles car are ready for primer. should be ready to spray in the next day or to depending on how things go. Ill have pics posted

OK! So long awaited update. All the body work is finally done on the "other" kyle's car. Everything is in primer except for the fenders.... we ran out of masking tape and it was like 2am:squint:. so i went ahead and primed everything else. i dont have any primer pics yet but i will hopefully in a week or two. i was tired and had an hour commute home since i moved.

As for my car. Im still job hunting so no monies yet....However, as soon as i started gettin the cash flow its party time:party: ill have a rebuild kit on the way and ill start gettin some stuff done hopefully. A garage may even be in the works this spring courtesy of my folks.:D

chibikougan 08-14-2010 12:28 PM

Nice work guys. Must come oogle one a these days.

FC3S Murray 08-14-2010 09:51 PM

Looking great buddy! Call me when you want to stop by and pick up the paint and reducer. :)

project86 08-29-2010 07:44 PM

Well guys it looks like I'm back In business. Just locked down a job working for a Budweiser distributor. Money has started rolling in so ill start collecting parts here and there. Might not do anything really drastic just yet because I want to save some coin so I can move back to TN in roughly a year.

project86 02-11-2011 12:02 AM

Well....

For those of you who were avidly following my build thread...
Car is STILL sitting but im waiting to see what tax returns look like. After that im hoping to get things underway.

Im really missing the damn thing. Im also moving AGAIN... to TN this time. Ill be leaving MT in July. If my car is running before then i think im gonna drive it down.. if not ill have to wait a bit and trailer it down.

On a more progressive note... haukbeebs car is ready for paint.. i finally got all my goodies for my SATAjet that i need. As soon as weather permits and he buys paint we will be pre paint cleaning and masking and then its show time. Pics of it will be up as soon as its done. Thank you to all my loyal followers :)

project86 03-27-2011 03:30 PM

Well its up for sale now fellas.....

WE3RX7 03-27-2011 08:05 PM

? your car is now 4 sale?
