I made it home from DGRRX safely but...
I'll start this one off...
I made it home safely from DGRRX but blew my motor in my FD today right after the dam around 1pm and decided it has never let me stranded so I drove home on 1 rotor. My previous motor blew 3 miles from my home and I made it home on one rotor so I figured this one could make it 300 miles. It did! :icon_tup: Post how you made it home blown or running perfect.. :):driving: |
I made it home.. after leaving Bham 11PM friday night (got 3.5 hours night before), got to NVNC at 4AM saturday, slept 2.5 hours, ran around and left NVNC at midnight, got home around 4:30AM CST... I got about 6 hours of sleep today :)
Kevin and Amber picked up some food for me and my wife with his blown engine. Quite amazing car! |
DGRRX claims... 1 FD transmission....1 FD engine...
|
Nothing, absolutely nothing. And its been only two weeks since i finished my single swap. I won so many bets back home. 1200 miles not a problem. :-D
oh, my gallon of 2 cycle fell over and leaked into my spare tire well, but thats not a mechanical failure :-P |

Damn Kevin, that's crazy. When I popped my engine at the top of my street I could barely get her into the driveway |
I drove my old FC once for a year with a blown rear rotor :). There's different grades of blown engines - a chipped apex seal will idle a little rough and be hard to start, but will run and drive fine. The more the apex seal lets go, the rougher the engine runs and the harder it is to start, sometimes the motor flat won't start or has pretty much zero power to drive.
Glad you made it home! Hopefully Rich will post how he did with his transmission. I made it home great, Phil and I had an awesome time, the car ran and performed beautifully. Can't wait for next year! Dale |
Glad you made it home Kevin. She didn't sound happy, but sounded determined to keep running when we parted ways just before the 129.
As for "how we made it home" we'll let you know when we make it. In a hotel off the side of I-81 at the moment. We didn't hit the road until around 4 or 5. Did the Dragon again, the Skyway etc. Plan to make it home sometime Tuesday most likely. (Breaking the trip up a bit to still try and have a bit of a vacation out of all of it.) |
damn that sucks kevin
i just made it back, no problems except for a nasty boost leak/hissing sound that popped up on the drive home.. couldnt find the source with a flashlight |
Barry Bordes and Chuck Westbrook got a flat and Barry's spare was low on air. They used a can of fix a flat and had to go 60 mph from north AL to Slidell LA due to a bad vibration.

The Volvo got dirty.

I had a intake gasket leak Friday. fixed that Fri night then lost a radiator Sat. But now the car is a proud owner of a nice alum rx-8 rad. Never did make it to the dragon but it made it home without over heating
|
After the water pump started leaking on saturday afternoon and then I spotted water in the oil sunday I thought I had some major trouble coming my way but the Deuce made it all the way home with no issues other than leaking about 1/4 gallon of water every 50miles.

1 ignition switch and needs a good harness side connector now after the 12+ pin rattled loose half way home . I did a full 2nd gear high boost pull on the on ramp after eating lunch and BOOM! Thought the engine grenaded.Thankfully I noticed the symptoms and traced back to the switch and put a new spade connector in the haness side to get home. 1 thermostat on the dragon friday. Other than that ok. Rich made it to scrub's house (Dan) in Delaware and is heading to the shop right now. Had a great time! G

My FD's drivers front fender liner was eatin by my tire(car sits to low w/to much body roll).
The tire didn't stop at the liner it also wanted some of my wiring harness... took a bite outta 8 wires in that harness. Thankfully it was not to bad and I was able to drive home. This was my first year and i'm hooked! AWESOME EVENT!! I'll be back next year! Steve |
Add a FB rear chunk to the list. Sam still has to drive back to Canada so he may have more to add to the list in a few days :)

I made it safe and sound no problems at all.
|
Ducktapes Jeep was pissing coolant from around the water pump. Got a little warm at the top of the Skyway on the way back but was able to get us and the sandrail home in one piece.

Must have been from lack of oil. There's no way an FB could make enough torque to damage an axle

had a little trouble saturday with temps, was running a little hot causing coolant to spew out of the overflow bottle and a little out of the ast...but nothing dangerous..im blaming the altitude on it since once i left the mountains i had/have zero issues at all
but i had an awesome time..i just need to change exhausts...droning almost made me deaf...anyone have an rb dual tip for sale? :D |
1st off.....Sorry to hear about your motor Kevin...
2nd.. Thanks for the AWESOME deal on the GoPro HD camara.. It's great...well worth the money. and last but not least... We made it back to South Florida with NO issues.... guess having the FD's on trailers was a great idea... We left Bryson at 9am and made it home at Midnight... As for the cars on the Dragon... they did great... NO issues and my temps never exceeded 90* C.... This was my 1st year at DGRR and I plan on making it back every year from now on.... Met alot of members so I was able to put faces to names... everyone was friendly and welcomed my wife and I with open arms... Thanks again for a GREAT weekend... Joe |
Yea they got lucky and got his rear end troubles fixed by saturday night
My saturday wasn't much better Power Windows wouldn't work Fuel Pump lost power. Fuses all blew from rigging up the PW Shifter broke (luckily got it rewelded) All gauges went out and the E-fan ( had to rewire them all ) Huge coolant overflow from just adding and not emptying the catch tank... But sure enough made it home fine =] |
I actually had great luck, my car left in much better shape then when I headed to the dragon in the first place.
The 12+ hour drive revitalized my flat Odyssey battery. When I left the starter wouldn't turn at all (even after charging for ~4 hours), and when running if I put on the brakes the radio would shut off. By the time I made it to NC the battery works like new, which I thought was impossible for a dry cell. Also on the drive down my boost pattern was 10-0-0, Dale was able to replace a faulty check valve on the spot for me and I had perfect working twins the rest of the trip. Hurray! |

Specs on the FB? Engine bay pic? |
Had to bang in a rear wheel fender edge so it didn't continue to jab into my $475 Michelin PS2 but other than that, no problems. G had enough of them for us all:) Tell them about the importance of using the key to prevent wheel lock if you hotwire the car!

We are now back in Canada and 4 hours from home. Got to visit Gettysburg on the way home so that was neat. God willing, we won't have any troubles in this last stint *knocks on wood* .
Thanl you all again for a great vacation! Stay in touch! |

I actually ended up in better shape than I started. :) All the way down there, and the whole time I was playing around on the Dragon, I had a bad ignition breakup issue (I thought). I found that the negative terminal (the clamp part on the end of the cable) had split, and was making only intermittent contact. Drove a screw into that to tighten the connection, but didn't seem to help much.
About halfway home it occurred to me that I had never opened up the fuel pressure regulator after installing the motor the previous weekend. Once I had enough fuel going to my poor starving Sterling, holy shit! I hadn't driven the car since last fall, so I hadn't realized I was that far down on hp. Wish I had found that out before running the Dragon, but I still had plenty of fun. I took a twisty route home, so finally made it after 16 hours of solid driving. I only spent about 20 minutes on an interstate, all the rest was backroads through NC, TN, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan. :) Oh, and that fb with the torn up rear end, I think the screename is DJ55B. I was eating dinner on the patio when he got if fixed and started giving out rides. Listening to him run up and down that road was impressive. As Billy put it later that night, that car is WICKED fast. Wish I could have taken a ride. I only got a chance to take one passenger through the Dragon this year though. Duffman, what did you think? . |
Rotarywall (EDD) blew his engine just making it into the drive way in Savannah. Thinks he cracked his rear iron. Kevin, that was the guy in the Turbo II that stayed at Holly's with us. He's at the bottom of a bottle right now, so Im posting for him.
|
Tell him to lay off the bottle and get to pulling that motor. I'll hope to have mine out by this weekend! maybe sooner.
|
my car did just fine in my driveway in idaho... : (

Good luck on yours though! Planning anything special? |
True true, Just plan to fix what is broke and maybe a larger IC :)
|
Barry;s FD was shod with Falken RT-615Ks. We had periodically checked tire pressures since his tires were fairly new and low mileage.
About half way to New Orleans, the left rear inner sidewall failed (multiple bubbles/bumps) on about 1/3 of the inner sidewall. Instant flat was the result. A can of Flat Fix fixed the resulting leak, but the tire was now out of round. Thus a slow slightly bumpy ride back. |
