Picked up some FB's....what to do, what to do

Over the last few weeks, and mostly while out of town for work, I picked up a couple of FB's. It has been a while since I have owned one, I think I sold my '82 5 or 6 years ago.

One is a 1985 GS, 120K, runs good, interior is so-so (missing door panels) and has a wonky front fender. I have not seen this car in person yet. I found it in North GA, and had my father in law pick it up for me. That was about 2 weeks ago, maybe I can go get it this weekend.

The 2nd is a 1984 GSL with no engine and is a mess (it does have 2/3 of the IMSA wing, lol). All I plan to do with this is loot the LSD disc rear end, front fender and a few other parts. Then jfaplanet is taking it to swap over a drivetrain and get it back on the road.

Currently I am looking at a bunch of options. Do I RE-Speed it out with all the big brake/5 lug conversion? Do I swap in GSL-SE bits and then do suspension upgrades?

Don't know yet, still working on some deals on parts :) For now, I have procured the RB Holley kit, stripping all emissions, and am working a deal for an entire interior.

Looking for an entire exhaust system and some other bits too. Hopefully this will be at DGRR. If I can find time to do any of this!!

The $$$ items may have to wait until I sell the Z3.

Any suggestions? (besides throw out the 12a.....I'm looking at you Brian)

diabolical1 03-04-2011 11:03 AM

you found two? looks like i need to go on the prowl.

what is your actual purpose for the car? i ask only because my advice would be to take your time and convert it to a Gen II drivetrain, add engine management and some basic mods (exhaust, suspension, brakes, etc.), then call it a day. however, if you plan on racing it most of the time, then i might suggest a different road.

djmtsu 03-04-2011 12:43 PM

The car will be a toy/Dragon Slayer.

I will not race it all the time. No local tracks, and I am not a big fan of the AutoX and the Nashville Superspeedway. The only time it will see real punishment is at Deals Gap, then it will be thrashed.

For drivetrain, you mean like an engine swap? For now, the 12a will get the basics and a front mount oil cooler. If I do an engine swap in the future, I am contemplating either a Turbo 4 port block (running NA) with ITB's and a Megasquirt, or a 13B-RE if I am going to go turbo. Although, I think that is too much power for the chassis in the twisties.

I picked these up VERY cheap. Hell, I might not even need the 85 anymore, but I figured I'd pick it up in case one of the locals needs anything. We have a good group here in Mid TN.

Do you have any pics of the cars?

:smilielol5: What? What did I say/do in the past to deserve such treatment? Oh wait.... I know

Sell them to some poor sucker who actually likes FB's for some unknown reason after you've raped all the needed parts for the Cosmo and concentrate on that build.... how's that coming? Can we expect a DGRRXI debut?

Sorry, I had some from when I was looking at the car, but somehow deleted all of them, and the ad is expired. I'll get some later. The black one in in my back yard, and not worth the memory space to take pics :)

I will have the '84 at Deals Gap this year. Right now I am contemplating buying those GSL-SE hubs/3rd member and Volk wheels from mazdadude7. But the price is steep, however everything is for the most part 'new'. The RE-Speed stuff isn't cheap either.

I am also about to pull the trigger on some new door seals, welt seals, sunroof seals, and a bunch of interior bits. I'm keeping the horrible maroon for posterity sake.

Don't hate. (I'm looking at you Brian......again)

djmtsu 03-04-2011 03:52 PM

Alright, I lied, I do have one pic. It is of the wonky fender.

Nutsid 03-04-2011 03:56 PM

RE-Speed brake conversion then move onto the RE-Speed coil-overs up front and a good three or four link rear. That would be the exact path I'd take.

fire85gslse 03-06-2011 09:43 PM

I have a full maroon interior sitting in a 85 car right now, clean.
Also have a running 12a

djmtsu 03-07-2011 07:38 AM

Don't need the engine Chad (yet).

But I do need quite a bit of interior stuff, and I want those BBS's you have.

Let's make a deal!!

TitaniumTT 03-07-2011 08:57 AM

:suspect:
Did someone say BBS's?:suspect:

If it's that weak 4x whatever FB bolt pattern, than no, no there isn't....

They are, but I do have a set of vert BBS's.

Are you looking for some?

TitaniumTT 03-07-2011 01:18 PM

Kinda, I have 'vert rims as well :D def don't need another set of those. Looking for FD wheels... always looking for FD wheels, well not really looking, waiting for an awesome deal to fall into my lap. Same style as my BBS or Works so when I hear BBS, my paints get a little tight.

these are better than vert wheels anyday! And yes DJ is stealing these from me...........

djmtsu 03-08-2011 07:38 AM

Yes sir! The wheels along with the interior will go a long way towards bringing it to DGRR this year. The RE-Speed goodies are going to have to wait until I have some more time and $$$ to do it ALL at once. I just want my ass in another 7 ASAP!!

Thanks Chad.

Agreed... the gorgeous old school ride doesn't hurt their appeal either.

yep, old school never gets old! Holla

TitaniumTT 03-10-2011 08:01 PM

That's what I like about high-school girls. I keep getting older but they stay the same age :suspect:

djmtsu 03-14-2011 12:17 PM

Finally brought home the GS from Chattanooga. It had a fuel leak at the carb fittings. Someone left out one of the crush washers on the banjo going into the carb. Easy.

Next weekend is going to be a busy weekend. I am going to be swapping out the rear axles, rebuilding brakes, and installing the interior bits. I also am going to start stripping the engine bay in preparation for the RB Holley carb kit, radiator and FMOC.

I just ordered new outer window seals (top of the door), new steering column covers, new hatch struts, and some other little things like the copper washers for the oil cooler lines, and a box of clips for the windshield trim. Wednesday I believe I am going to be able to get to Chad's to get the interior parts, and pick up the BBS wheels.

The car has a homebrew exhaust system. Stock exhaust manifold, straight through to a HORRIBLE muffler that sounds like poo poo. Attaching a pic below. That is NOT a dual outlet, but rather a 2 into 1 muffler tip. And notice the super awesome USDM hanger.

Any suggestions for a decent muffler? Lol.

RX-7 Chris 03-14-2011 06:19 PM

I would agree with the racing beat stuff

djmtsu 03-14-2011 07:27 PM

agreed, but 285 for a muffler that does nothing is just too much. might get the universal RB and put a then down on it. or a Borla XR-1.

TheBlack7 03-15-2011 08:34 PM

go for a magnaflow you won't be disappointed the sound is delicious

djmtsu 03-17-2011 06:51 AM

Not much to update, just been collecting parts, parts, parts.

Went to Chad's and got all I needed for the interior, still missing a few pieces here and there, but mostly complete now, picked up the BBS wheels too. Snagged some new rear rotors and pads for the disc swap. Got some springs from Charles (ST maybe?) Picked up the OEM parts from Mazda as well. The Holley carb is getting a rebuild, and the manifold is getting powdercoated.

Coming along. This weekend I should have the rear ends swapped, the wheels on, and the interior in. As long as the wife leaves me alone!!

yes, poor car got raped that poor car! DJ you should feel dirty!

djmtsu 03-17-2011 09:27 AM

She was asking for it :)

And it was partially raped when I got there, more like a gangbang.

Don't forget to call Billy!

djmtsu 03-17-2011 01:39 PM

Picked up an MSD 6AL box.

Now to use 2 coils, or an FC coil....

fire85gslse 03-17-2011 08:12 PM

Seals on ebay
Item number: 230550811701

fire85gslse 03-17-2011 08:13 PM

Those would work but mindtrain is the baddest for the 1st gens!

djmtsu 03-17-2011 08:19 PM

That may be true, but I have a $$$ budget.

Let me borrow the whole system for a while, see if I like it :)

djmtsu 03-20-2011 12:37 PM

Well, got the axles swapped out and the rear springs are in.

One issue. I can't put the BBS's on yet. The stock wheel bolts are too short for the hub thickness of the BBS wheels. They don't even reach through the wheels, much less have thread to go into the rotor. I can't seem to find extended wheel bolts anywhere.

Any ideas????

New booster and master cylinder on the way. Found a really good stud kit for the wheels. Turns out the company is local to where I grew up!! Ordered a full stud kit and a set of lug nuts, black anodized. Got a REALLY good deal too. If anyone wants tires, wheels, studs, lugs, adapters, whatever give them a shot!

djmtsu 03-23-2011 12:48 PM

Wheel studs arrived!
MSD arrived!
Brake Booster with new MC arrived!
Holley Blue pump and regulator arrived!

Parts are coming together. I'll be working on it this weekend.

Studs and nutz

djmtsu 03-28-2011 01:44 PM

Nothing got done this weekend. The weather did not cooperate at all, and with the Cosmo and all its spare parts in the garage, there is not a whole lot of room to work all around the FB.

I did order some more bits for the interior from Mazda. Its amazing how much they still have available, and how cheap it actually is. Nearly everything I got cheaper than people are selling used! I also locked down a glass moonroof.

More to come....

djmtsu 03-29-2011 06:47 AM

Picked up an RB Muffler from Billy.

This weekend is looking good to work on the FB. I sure could use some help though, time is running out.

djmtsu 04-05-2011 12:09 PM

Studs are in, wheels are on.
'New' gauge cluster in.
New ignition switch assembly in
New headlight/combo switch in
New OEM steering column surrounds in.
New booster/master cylinder in

Still have to:
bleed brakes
strip emissions
install Holley carb/pump/regulator
install RB muffler
Wire in MSD for direct fire
install FMOC
install some more interior bits
install gauges
install front springs

No time for paint :(

I also think I should replace the radiator. The previous owner decided that JB weld fixes everything!

Here is a shitty pic from my phone.
