Chattanooga, TN area RX-7's

This thread is to help try and get Chattanooga, TN area people together with their rotary cars. If you have a rotary car or parts. Post here and we'll try to get some rotary cars together for some hang outs, tech support and parts swapping.

djmtsu 11-27-2011 10:05 AM

My wife is from Chattanooga, and I am there quite a bit. In fact, I was just there this weekend!

I have only ever seen a handfull of RX-7's when visiting. Usually for sale, or rotting in someones yard. I can hit you up next time I'm down. Would love to see your cars.

thumpgun 11-27-2011 01:21 PM

There used to be more 7's around here. I think they are all dying off and no one can fix them. Since my bro closed down his shop several years ago, all the 7's have been dying.
My TII is about to have the motor pulled out and rebuilt. We think it may have a cracked front plate. And the '85 is just getting some gradual upgrades as time and money allow.

thumpgun 11-28-2011 04:39 PM

Worked on my project GSL rear brakes and 3rd member yesterday. Getting this stuff ready to transfer over to my GS. Got the calipers apart, the brackets off. Going to have to get reman calipers though, and use these for cores. Everything else is good though. Picked up the parts Friday evening and worked a little over the weekend on them. I'll try and do photo's when I actually get more done and start on the install.

djmtsu 11-28-2011 05:05 PM

I did the GSL swap on my GS last year. Easy as cake. I should have rebuilt my calipers while I was in there, but I put my pressure bleeder on them, and they didn't leak so I let it ride.

I wish I would have stripped the axle, painted it and rebuilt all the bearings while it was out, but I was in a hurry at the time.

thumpgun 11-28-2011 05:35 PM

I was going to rebuild these and even after soaking them for almost two days the bleeder valves still broke off. Even broke the base on my old bench vise trying to get the brackets off. I'm going to paint all of it, make it look good. Nice project to add to the list for the winter.
Here's when I picked the parts up Friday. I believe they've been wet for quite some time.

Wow, yeah that stuff has been sitting a while. Where did you find it? I always look at Craigslist in Chattanooga/NW GA when I am hunting down stuff since I am there so often.

In fact, Chattanooga is where I found my current FB, and 2 years ago found a mint SA for a friend.

thumpgun 11-29-2011 09:51 AM

I got it from a guy down the road from me. I sold him a '85 GSL parts car (no motor or trans) several years ago and was trying to buy it back. He's an old school Celica guy but has a few junk 1G 7's. He wanted to keep the one I sold him and had these parts already pulled, so I got them.
Back several years ago my guru buddy had I'd guess 10 or so 1G cars for parts at his house. Got divorced and his ex junked all of it. He used to have an all rotary shop in Chattanooga. I worked there the last 2 years it was open.
We had a lot of parts cars there. I ended up with one 1G and five 2G cars from that. They're all gone now. Parted out and sold. I still have a lot of 13B NA plates and housings, coil packs and some other stuff all packed up. I also have a 13B 4 port motor.

thumpgun 12-01-2011 10:22 AM

Got some info on the other forum about coil overs. I'm going to look into coil overs and get some more ideas. I'm not in a rush for any of this anyway. I've had this car for many years and have had a lot of fun with it.
I just wanted to finally do some suspension upgrades to it. Hopefully be decent enough this weekend to get the GSl housing cleaned up and maybe painted.

Since you mentioned bearings, I was wondering if I should replace all the bearings on that LSD or just run with it? It turns good, doesn't have any wiggle and makes no noise. I mean while it's apart would probably be the time to do it. I just wondered if they really need it or if the factory bearings will hold up just fine.

djmtsu 12-01-2011 11:29 AM

I would do it just because it is out, and you don't want to do it again. I think I have a right rear wheel bearing starting to make noise. I should have replaced them when I swapped axles, but was lazy (it happens alot).

So, are you going to go to the Deals Gap Rotary Rally? If so, let us know. We caravan through Chatt every year and can meet up!

thumpgun 12-01-2011 01:31 PM

I'm definately doing the wheel bearings. I'll price all of the LSD bearings and see how that comes out. I've never had one apart until now. I just don't want to mess anything up trying to take the Diff apart and changing bearings.

I have thought about doing the Deal's Gap run a couple of times. And I never have yet. I'd like to go, but it really depends. I go to a huge VW show here around the same time. So I'll just have to see, and I'll let you know so I can follow along with you guys if I go.
I'd prefer to take my TII on that run. But I don't think I'll have it rebuilt by that point. But I'm sure the FB would be a blast. Like driving a big go-cart around in the mountains!

thumpgun 12-07-2011 08:37 AM

Got my housing cleaned up and a coat of paint on it. I still have to get my calipers and e brake cables.
My heater core went out. So I have to replace it before I start anything else. Ever done that? I'm sure it's going to be an adventure, lol!

Here's a pic of the housing. I did it while I was rust sealing the pans on my '61 VW I'm building. I've been working on it and doing some on the GSL parts also.

djmtsu 12-07-2011 12:35 PM

I have not done a heater core in an FB (yet) but you do have to remove the dash!

85rx-7gsl-se 12-07-2011 02:11 PM

Damn I didnt want to hear that DJ.

thumpgun 12-07-2011 11:57 PM

I've heard you might have to remove the dash, but not sure yet. Need to look in the manual and see. I figured it would be a complete hell to change it out, lol!

Quote:

Damn I didnt want to hear that DJ.
Do you need to change yours out too??

85rx-7gsl-se 12-08-2011 01:24 AM

Yeah I have just been putting it off for about 4 years lol.

thumpgun 12-14-2011 07:41 AM

The colder it gets I think I'm going to just bypass mine until warmer weather. I don't want to try pulling all of that apart out in the cold.
Of course if we still get some nicer weather and I can work on it all day I may be able to knock it out and have it finished.
I've got enough projects to last through winter.

thumpgun 12-19-2011 09:14 AM

Awesome! Brand new for 2012! I'm sure they'll make a few different color schemes eventually. This one is sweet. I can't wait to get a handful of them!

djmtsu 12-19-2011 02:50 PM

I. want. flares. like. that.

Nice.

thumpgun 12-21-2011 09:37 AM

I've been thinking of doing flares. Not the widebody kit style. I really like the look of them.
But I also think a 1G looks great with no body attachments at all. They just look good with no spoilers, skirts, etc.
Just the flares look sweet though. I'd like to get a set and mock them up on the car. Check it out, go from there. See if I really do want them.

thumpgun 07-14-2012 08:29 AM

There's now a Knoxville RX7 Club group page on facebook. If you are in this area you can go check it out and join the group. Has info about autocross and drifting events in this area and region.
Thought it might be helpful to anyone trying to meet up with other rotary owners. Or for people looking for events or RX-& gatherings in this area.

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm hanging in there and trying to get some work done to all of my project cars.
It's slow.. Very slow. But I have hopes of getting some good Winter projects started and hopefully accomplishing some things to all my project cars. Every time I have extra money lately, I have to use it for something else. Lol, seems that's life!

thumpgun 06-09-2013 10:51 PM

Been a while since I've been on here. It still seems to be pretty slow for this thread. I hope to keep it going though.
Been working on VW's all Winter. Time to get started on some of my RX stuff I need to get done. It's about to be rebuild time for the TII.
As soon as my resources are all together and it starts. I hope to post some photos.

thumpgun 06-10-2013 11:19 PM

I replaced the wiper/turn signal cluster in my '85 today. The wipers still won't work. The fuse is good, the motor works. I'm going to get my buddy with wiring skills to look at it.
It must be a relay, which I thought was built into the cluster.
If anyone has any ideas, let me know and I'll check it out.

thumpgun 06-12-2013 11:06 PM

Didn't get to do any work on the 7's today. Was helping a buddy put the motor back in his Beetle. The humidity is awful. It's stifling outside and pretty miserable.
More reports on the wiper situation on the '85 as I try and figure out what the problem is.

thumpgun 06-23-2013 07:48 AM

I've been waiting on putting tires on my '85 because I want to upgrade to 15'' wheels. The 13'' tires have been on it for many years. And have a lor of dry rot cracks in them. I have kept tire shine on them somewhat. But time and weather has dried them out.
I drove it the other day, played around a few minutes and brought it home. Parked it and shut it down and heard a hiss.. Left front was going flat!
At least it didn't pop while driving or leave me stranded somewhere. Had to find a used 13" to go back on it which isn't that easy anymore.
Got it fixed within a couple of hours of it's demise. And got a new car cover for it also. Another good day of happy motoring.

thumpgun 06-26-2013 08:15 AM

Sat. July 13, @ 8:00p at Gondoliers Pizza next to The Rush on Lee Hwy. Chattanooga, TN just a casual eat, greet, and meet.

From another forum I'm on. Some cars have been getting together. There's a few rotaries involved. I'm going to try and check it out. I won't be able to have either of my cars there yet. But still try to get by there.
We are hoping to arrange a get together for some rotaries in the Fall this year. I'll post up some dates later on when they develop.

thumpgun 09-18-2014 08:18 PM

Been making a parts list for the '85. It's time to start gathering up a few things to do some repairs. And also some things I want to the the car.
Hope everyone is doing well and keeping on.
I'll try to update more often. Get busy working on junk cars and never seem to find the time.

thumpgun 09-29-2014 08:06 PM

Took the '85 to a big cruise-in Saturday. I usually take my '61 Beetle but it has the number 2 intake valve stuck. Have to pull the motor and change the head.
So I decided to the the 1G car and hang out. It got a few looks and photos made of it. But it was mostly overlooked. I enjoyed taking it though and will probably take it back sometime.

thumpgun 12-19-2014 10:06 PM

Got a '73 240Z and sold a couple of my Beetles. Time to get some money and put it into the 7's.
What's anyone's opinion on stock versus aluminum radiator for a '85 GS? That's my next project and I'm trying to decide which one to go with. Any info, suggestions or experiences with an aluminum radiator would be appreciated.

Got my idler arm and radiator for the '85. Get it installed and the supsension, wheels and tires are next.

thumpgun 10-27-2015 09:54 PM

I got my new aluminum radiator installed. I promptly broke the coolant level sensor. It was leaking around it. So I tried to tighten it and the top broke off.
Also installed a new Moog idler arm.
And my next project for the car should arrive this week. And I'm super stoked on this. I'll post some pics as soon as package arrives.

Here's what I was waiting on. Got some BBS Mahle wheels to go on the '85. They're 15x7 ET18. I'm going to strip the lips and polish them. Them have them cleared. Getting som ewheel studs and lugs for them. And I'll get some tires once I get them refinished. Looking forward to adding these to the car. Correct bolt pattern and all!

good find. You can never go wrong with meshies on a first gen.

djmtsu 10-30-2015 08:45 AM

Nice! I got my studs and lug nuts for my old FB here---> http://shop.gearworkstireandwheel.com/main.sc

I am not sure if they have the studs anymore though, don't see them on the website. But it was inexpensive, and the studs came with whatever style lug nuts you needed.

thumpgun 11-01-2015 03:02 PM

Thanks! I checked that site out. I couldn't find the wheel studs either. But a very good resource to save. I ordered some studs Thursday and hopefully pick them up tomorrow. And luckily I was digging through some old parts I have yesterday. And found a box of lug nuts that should work great.
Yeah, I was super stoked to get these wheels. Thanks for the replies.

thumpgun 11-09-2015 11:50 PM

I've got wheel studs and found some lugs I didn't know I had that will work. I've been stripping the clear coat off the wheels and polishing them.
Hoping I can get them looking really good. They'll have some imperfections but nothing really bad. Overall I believe they'll look and perform great.
