need some help

Alright for starters I got a 1985 mazda rx7 12a 1.1ltr carb. First got the car had some problems driving it home all of which pointed to the fuel pump at the time. So after inspecting the fuel filter and finding small pieces of rust I dropped the whole tank and discovered I had a rust issue. I replaced hoses front to back due to cracking and leaking gas lines as well as put a new fuel level sensor and fuel pump. After which all reinstalled car cranked right up and had no issues but what sounded like a misfire. So I replaced spark plug wires with the ngk ones and ngk plugs (guy before had motorcraft plugs... -_-) now it turns over and will either run for a few minutes or crank and die... ive inspected the charcoal canister recirculation andall the mesh Iinside of it appears pretty clogged up would that cause it to do whats happening?? Or is there something im missing???

If I had to guess I'd say you probably have rust particles in the carburetor itself. The charcoal canister shouldn't be causing your problem. A rebuild of the carburetor might be in order to make sure it's clean and has no air leaks. Also check for vacuum leaks while you're at it. The vacuum hoses are probably pretty old and starting to crack/deform, a vacuum leak will drive you nuts trying to diagnose it.

Well before I had gotten it the guy before me had already replaced the carb. The jets and all seem to be spraying correctly but I keep hearing about these vaccum lines which judging from what ive already replaced would be a accurate guess.. any idea where to get a diagram of all the vaccum lines?

diabolical1 02-23-2013 10:03 PM

try the FSM.

mystery 02-23-2013 11:26 PM

Well I actually work for autozone here in pensacola and had a customer that told me I needed to put a 650 cfm carb in the car and rip out half those vaccuum lines and bypass them all. Has anyone done this??

for the sake of clarity, you mentioned dropping the tank, but did you have it cleaned? if you didn't then the filter is probably clogged again. you can check the carburetor, like GySgtFrank suggested as well. clean it, check it for debris, then follow the FSM and adjust it. whenever all of this gets sorted, you might want to add a second filter to the system, too.

as for your friend with the Holley recommendation, as a solution, it makes no sense.

mystery 02-24-2013 01:07 PM

Yes the tank was cleaned out managed to suckout 3 rocks from the guy before me. before I had takn it somewhere to get the rust takn care of completely and I tried adding in the second filter but the compression wasnt right and it wasnt able to get fuel to the carb... after. Took it out and just put a strait like back in it. Cranked right up >_<

Seanrot 02-26-2013 09:42 AM

Ill be honest I didnt read all the stuff above but last time I saw this issue was it doesnt matter how much you clean out the tank if there is rust in it. You have to coat it in something. My guess is your fuel filters are clogged again with rust. get a gas can and run the inlet/return into the can and replace the fuel filters. I bet she will run just fine.

mystery 03-05-2013 12:17 AM

Emptyed the tank and used a clear fuel filter this time so that I can see the fuel running. And cars doing the same thing.. cranks then dies after about 15 seconds... started going through the vaccuum lines and have had to replace a couple as well as a one way check valve that I cant seem to figure out where it goes. Any ideas?

diabolical1 03-08-2013 07:10 PM

take a photo of the valve you mentioned.

does it idle smoothly for those 15 seconds? does it remain live when you manually pull the choke?

mystery 03-16-2013 11:04 PM

Idle is amazing while it runs choke stays solid and it dies wither the choke is in or not... ive been looking into a bigger carb but having problems finding an adapter plate to mount it now..

diabolical1 03-18-2013 06:20 PM

where is the fuel level in the bowls?

mystery 03-19-2013 06:58 PM

Whats best way to check that?

diabolical1 03-20-2013 07:18 PM

there are "sights" (clear glass that allows you to look into the bowls) on either side of the carburetor.

also, there is a solenoid at the front (looking from the driver's side) of the carburetor, make sure it is plugged in.

diabolical1 03-20-2013 08:00 PM

just some basic tidbits I thought I would link for you to peruse ...

Mazspeed carburetor tidbits

Oo yes awesome! And if theres nothing in those bowls what would that mean?? Cause those where bone dry.

ran83 04-09-2013 01:27 PM

mystery i saw that you were in pensacola i am guessing florida right? i am also from pensacola and will be back there soon so if you need some help i am sure that i will be in and out of auto zone. any how everyone always tells me work from the least expensive thing to the most expensive i guess thats a decent rule of thumb, i will send you some info for a guy that i know down there who you wouldnt think does rx7 but is actually pretty good and that nevelle automotive. he was a teacher of mine at wesf florida tech but is a pretty knowlegeable guy and could probably point you in a good direction!

ran83 04-09-2013 01:29 PM

and also there are a group of RX7 guys that hang out at bay front that could probably be of good help im not sure if you ever make it down there but its good times as long as the cops dont show up because some one is being dumb!!!

mystery 04-13-2013 08:01 PM

Haha yeah man I know about bayfront and theres always someone being stupid cops patrol that route all night one reason I quit goin down there. Alot of people split off from that just for that reason anf have made different meeting spots sat nights to prevent the pigs from showin. But I used to go down there alot in highschool with friends and what not but half them joined military so im a lone ranger. But I van always use help man ive already went cheaper way and redone the gas tank and fuel lines and by trial and error theres fuel getting to the carb just isnt doing nothing with it cause of the stuff that was in the tank. But I been talking to the mechanic at V&T Performance and hes been pretty cool. But as ive told everyone,,, theres alot of work that it needs to get it where I want it to be at but main concern is the engine cause it does have 214k origional miles on engine and tranny.

ran83 04-15-2013 01:15 PM

Thats a good it of miles for a first gen. do you know if it has had a rebuild at all?? you may need apex seals. i would also do a compression test to see what you are getting and that would give you a good idea as to weather the apex seals are bad or not. yeah as far as bayfront goes there are alot of coppers running around but also check with XXX perfomance there is pensacola i know they dont work with rx7s but i am sure they could refer you to someone good in that area

mystery 04-15-2013 05:41 PM

Yeah I been worried about those seals but theres a guy that comes into autozone that works for butlerupullit that told me there was a strong seal for earlier years. But problem is for me to do a compression check I gotta have it running continuelly and thats gonna cost about $750 for the carb and intake mani. And I have no idea if its been rebuilt or not guy before me didnt know anything about the car and actually had motor craft plugs in it.. so I can only tell you what ive done to it. But XXX was useless to me and V&T was only place that offered to help other than a few mechanics around town that understand these cars but everytime ive gone looking for information ive learned something new which I find to be pretty cool. >_<

ran83 04-16-2013 10:36 AM

yeah there is always something new to be learned...... were are you getting your intake and carb at?????/ I have a factory one here at the house that is in good shape and had a fresh rebuild an tune on it befor it was pulled..... let me know if i have to i will send you this one!

mystery 04-16-2013 06:08 PM

Was actually going to order everything online I wanna put that 48 ida weber which ide then have to change the intake mani. And I also have an after market exhaust header to put on as well so needless to say when I do scrape up the cash to get the weber like I want its gonna scream!! ^_^ also found a guy today that I spoke with that has had more than one of these cars and he knows how to bypass alot of these vaccuum lines which im stoked about cause the ones in this car are a cluster $%@#..

ran83 04-17-2013 09:34 AM

good shit man sounds like you know which way you want to go with it. let me know how it works out for you. hopefullly the carb issue is the only thing wrong with it and she will be back up and running before too long!

mystery 04-19-2013 02:42 PM

Yeah man im crossing my fingers. Ill have updates on the progress of it once I get there my biggest concern is those seals which should have been the first thing I checked when I had it runnin again buttt ill defidently keep ya updated. Ide love to add pictures but cant seem to figure that part out lol >_<
