What kind of oil do you use?

Just curious on what kind of oil people use and why for there rx-7? and also does it really matter what kind of anti-freeze to use?

N.RotaryTech 04-17-2008 04:35 PM

For my Wankel's: Castrol gtx 10w30.
For pre-mix: Marine 2-stroke oil from Walmart, usually in a blue bottle. Hey its cheap. :shrugs shoulders:

WE3RX7 04-17-2008 05:46 PM

^ +1 same setup. I've owned numerous 7s. I only run Castrol GTX. Usually a 10w30, but if its a little smokey I put some 20w50 in it...

I also use the TCW3 blue bottle from wal-mart...

Phoenix7 04-17-2008 07:15 PM

When I do my own oil change: Castrol GTX 10W-30
When I don't do my own oil change: Anything 10W-30 that NOT synthetic.

You can see the FSM and owner's manual for the correct oil weigh, based on the ambient temps your car will see.

Rotary_Rocket_87 04-17-2008 08:09 PM

engine: GTX 20w50
premix: whatever there is where I get gas. (usually Citgo Marine)

gerudas11 04-17-2008 08:58 PM

Castrol gtx 10w30 is the way to go

My5ABaby 04-17-2008 09:47 PM

what is it then oil and unicorn piss?

SpooledupRacing 10-08-2008 08:03 PM

nope.. it is a basestock 3 oil... Basestock 3/4 oil

basestock 3 is highly refined dino oil (still just dino oil) basestock 4 is synthetic oil

IN the US in order to be a synthetic oil you only have to have 18% basestock 4 mixed with basestock 3 oil in order to qualify.

Mobl 1 has 20% basestock 4 oil..

in otherwards it like midgrade gas.. u pay extra for nothing..

ELF/Total and Amzoil (not sure yet on Royal purple) is a PURE 100% basestock 5 oil (ultra high refined synthetic oil.

food for thought the next time u buy your "synthetic" oil for 4.00 a bottle and buy it at WALMART remember your paying for the name not the product..

PREMIUM oil is sold at a PREMIUM price and not in a supermarket.

SpooledupRacing 10-08-2008 08:05 PM

more food for thought..

Idementsu (sp) as most of you know is a PREMIUM TOP LINE rotary oil..

Produced, and manufactured by ELF/TOTAL ;)

djmtsu 10-08-2008 08:19 PM

Bah, synthetic is for worry warts (in rotaries).

I use Mobil One Synthetic in the Jeep and the Mazda3.

I hate discussions on oil, they never go well, and everyone feels their opinion is the best.

SpooledupRacing 10-08-2008 08:50 PM

true oil will always be a battle about preference all I can do is offer the facts and my opinion and be done with it.

and I just use synthetic in all my cars because I feel it protects better and for the price why not.

Diesel oil huh? How's that working?

SpooledupRacing 10-09-2008 07:47 AM

Yeah Rotella T is great stuff I use it in about 98% of all the diesels I work on..

But that is 15w40 Rotella

RotaryXperiment 10-09-2008 07:50 AM

all that food for thought is making me hungry haha,

i didnt know that about the oil, thanx for the info!

FC Zach 10-09-2008 08:06 AM

There is also a national shortage on Mobil 1 oil. If you shop at Advance you'll see a flyer prorating a previous discount that was intended for Mobil products to go toward any other synthetic in the store.

SpooledupRacing 10-09-2008 08:31 AM

Also remember Mobil1 is perifin base.

Exactly. It might be great stuff, but for $40 for 5 liters, no thanks. I can get 12 quarts of GTX for that. Granted, it may not be the best oil, but it's plenty good enough. In 100,000 miles you'll be spending $1000 for oil changes if you use the Total stuff. I'd much rather spend 1/2 that and have a perfectly fine engine. Your compression might be 3 psi higher, but I can live with that. :D

SpooledupRacing 10-09-2008 09:16 AM

well when u drop 6K or more on a motor spending 40.00 ever couple months to change the oil is a small price to pay for added protection..

remember it cost money to play the game..

how much do u want to spend?

Now dont get me wrong I have no problem with conventional oil.. if I used it I would use GTX thats my preference.. HOWEVER IMO the synthetic oil is a better oil and its not that much more in my eyes.

I guess I'm speaking from an S4 N/A perspective. I spent a total of about $1000 to have my engine rebuilt so it seems foolish to spend that much on oil. However, if I had an engine with new housings/plates/etc., I might justify the synthetic.

SpooledupRacing 10-09-2008 10:48 AM

Well honestly there is people who will drop 10G into an engine and still wont use synthetics and thats ok again oil will ALWAYS be about choice..

I use it because I think ANY engine will benifit from it thus why I added it to my 220K bmw, my wifes 150K jeep and I will use it from the begining in my turbo rotary engien when I am done..

hell I used it in my n/a engine.. at 70K it was well worth it. IMO

classicauto 10-09-2008 12:14 PM

I'm a conventional man myself. For me, putting out 400whp my oil gets dilluted with gas FAR FAR before the oil ever reaches its useable life span in mileage. I change it roughly every 2000kms.

10-30 at the start of the season, 20w50 in the peak of summer, 10w30 in the fall.

IMO, once you get much above stock power and are injecting a little more then stock fuel, your oil will be contaminated very fast. Whether you do $45-50 dollar synthetic chnages, or $15 dino changes the oil gets gassy either way and needs to be changed....so I opt for the cheaper of the two options.

EDIT: its also just carquest brand oil since I deal alot with them. I also use their oil filters which are carquest badged WIX filters.

gtx 20w 50 year round

I recommend either Shell Rotella or Chevron Delo. Both are available in a 15-40w. A while back zinc was removed from all "automobile" engine oils. Zinc is a major part of the additive package that helps protect engine against wear on sliding surfaces. Mostly you think of cam lobes and followers. In a rotary engine there is a high amount of surface are that slides (ie, apex, side, corner seals, oil seal steels). Many, many professional engine builders and hobbyists have seen what can happen as a result of new auto oils not having the same additives as they had just a few years ago. The catch to all this is that "diesel" oils still have the zinc in their package. I've been running Rotella for years without issue. Both the standard and synthetic formulas. If you still have the OMP connected then you'll want to stick with the non-synthetic.

From Chris Ludwig, that's why I started using it.

FortyfiveD 10-09-2008 08:42 PM

15w40 Castrol GTX for daily, Motul 15w50 Competition Oil for the track, Redline light shock and heavy in the trans and rear diff.
