My Racing Brake FD Setup
Having a fast street car, I wanted to upgrade my brakes without spending more than needed for the application. The brake company is "Racing Brake".
http://www.racingbrake.com/ Front: I opted for their two piece OEM fit rotors. They fit with either of 2 minor mods: use a thin spacer to prevent the rotor from slightly rubbing the caliber during tight turns or lightly grind off the area where it rubs. This is caused by the fact that these rotors are 2mm thicker than stock and also have directional air cooling vanes. Rear: They have the same type of two piece rotors for the stock rears, but I went with their BBK rears which are almost identical to the 99+ larger rears. It uses the stock caliper but uses a new mounting bracket to move the caliper out further. It also has a two piece larger rotor but stock thickness. Pads: I tried EBC REDS but they require more brake pedal pressure and still start to get weak at braking speeds over 120. I now have the RB ET500 pads which are modified Hawk compounds similar to HP+. They do not squeal and only lightly dust. They require less brake force than the REDS and work better until they get very hot and then the REDS were slightly better. From these two, I say the ET500 are the better pads. I do not care for either due to my driving style. I might go back to Hawk HP+ which I ran for years on the stock brakes or try the Axxix ULTs. My wheels are old Enkei Racing RP01s - 9"x17". 245/40-17 front and 275/40-17 rear Yokohama EVS ES100s. |
Nice info chuck. I intend to use ebc greens as I have always had good success with them.

Thanks for the info. I have not had very good luck finding good pads here in Japan. I tried some Project Mu's and they had decent control until hot once they got hot I had to really put some pressure down to get results. I will take a pic of them when tomorrow but to sum it up they literally fried.
Then Last week I tried Sumitomo CSS (dont quote me on that exact model name they might have been CXS or something.) These pads seemed to bite a bit better as well as eat the hell out of my rotors. They almost completely smoothed out the slots in my rotors . For the amount of rotor they ate they were not much of a step up from the Project Mu pads. I think I will be ordering a set of RB that I have heard good things about or just get a set of Hawk HP's. |

any pics of your setup? you spent $650 for the front rotors? ouch.
http://www.racingbrake.com/RX7_s/3213.htm Are these your rears for $1000? http://www.racingbrake.com/RX7_s/3297.htm It would be cool if they offered the same kit for the fronts. I would think with a stoptech front only kit for $2000 might be better alternative and way better for open tracking. I open track with the hawk HP+ and love them. my 2 cents. |
I will be changing to Axxis ULT pads today.
My current RB ET500 pads are not as good as Hawk HP+, and I want to try something new one more time before giving up on anything else other than the Hawks. |
Yeah, I have the ET500s front and rear, and I'm not happy.
|
The Axxis ULT are good but dust more than ET500 or EBC REDS. Still not what I want for
stopping from 140mph (doing 4th gear tuning runs). I place them better than the REDS but about equal to ET500s. Just put in HP+ 2 weeks ago. So far up to 100mph are better. Will test higher speeds when I think they are 100% bedded. ************************************************* $1460 was my cost with the RB promotion last year. |
Here are pics.

HP+ shouldn't have any fadding problems on the street. I run them and have no problems. I also know a few that track them and love them, but they are on lesser powered cars than the FD. I don't trust them for track purposes but I've never really tried them.
|
I've had good results with the HPS on the RB BBK.
|
Today I was out testing/logging 16psi of boost with my newly installed/bedded HP+ pads.
As always before, when warmed up they squeel a little under light load. That does not bother me and is a "WARNING/INVITATION" to other cars to see my SERIOUS brake system. And as always, the pads out performed the others I tried with the new brake system. Better cold and better hot. HP+ rule the street world! |
Are your brakes a little more rear biased now since those rears are made for bbks?
|
It's hard to beat Hawk pads for the performance. They are noisy, dusty, and corrosive but they don't have a problem working properly.

(1) panic 60mph-0 (2) medium 120mph-60 It never felt like the rear wanted to swap on me and the car does not nose dive. Don't fotget that my fronts are RB's 2 piece which are 2mm thicker than stock with directional cooling vanes. Since not having an infrared temp sensor, I was unable to compare fronts to rear temperatures, but both have about the same bluing from 120mph stopping. The 1999 Fd brakes are almost identical to what I have now. A friend has such a temp gauge and I plan to test with hime some day. |
While I am replacing my diff to chassis bushings, I took this picture of the rears.
|
This summer I replace the RB OEM fronts with their big brake kit.
|
^ How do you like them?
I'm torn between the BBK front/back kit from RB and the RB rear with the new wilwood front BBK. The wilwoods use pretty much the same technology, but they are 6-piston and about a grand cheaper when bought from Illicit Performance (Glenn aka mazpower on here and 7club) |
That looks great Chuck. :)
|
I am using the ET700 pads front and rear and love them for aggressive street driving. They have good initial cold (winter) friction and can take a lot of heat. No problems at all at DGRR 2011 with them.
My new Advan AD08s in 255/40-17 also help a lot! |
