choke

is there an automatic choke on an 87 rx7. I know its fuel injected and most of them dont have them, but theres gotta be something of the sort
for it to start cold.

better coolant/water ratio. Better battery. Better oil (or correct viscosity for your temps). That's all I can think of to help you turn your car on in COLD weather (mind you I don't think I've seen anything lower than 30*).

it starts fine cold, but once it warms up its harder to start and has a problem idoling.

Careful with your question there's two different systems that were instituted for the car to start up in cold weather. There's also a third system that I'll describe later to better help you understand.

Yes, having the correct Viscosity and a better battery and at least a 50/50 mix of coolant will help in the cranking during cold weather. Also in aiding a cold start you must have good compression on both rotors. Carbon build up also may interfere with cranking.

The two systems built for the RX7 and specifically for the FC is the accelerated warm up protocol, and the Cold start system. Both these systems are not that good at doing what they should. Accelerated warm up puts un-needed stress on the engine and the Cold Start System flat out fails.

The third system is a standard protocol that all cars have. It's the cranking fuel map. This is based on coolant temperature and will alter the P/w of the injectors for start-up.

Ensuring that you have the correct oil, and the proper systems disabled will help you in starting the car.

Check your compression. As well as do a tune up on your car. You may have to adjust the idle, and a few other things here and there. Make sure your TPS is in spec and all the rest. This is a hot start issue, not cold. Also, what's your car? S4 or S5?

Phoenix7 09-09-2008 01:48 PM

^^+1 also look into cleaning your injectors. Look for KGparts on this forum, he hooks it up.

Jeff4764 09-09-2008 02:07 PM

its an s4

Here's what you should do in an attempt to remedy your hot start problems:

1) Check your compression. If you get low numbers, you'll need a rebuild sooner rather than later
2) Check and set your TPS to within Factory spec.
3) Finish the other 15,000-45,000 tune up procedures
If you still have trouble
4) Send your injectors out to be cleaned

(honestly you can do those in any order you want, but sending out your injectors makes it hard to do alot of the other stuff)

I also just left autozone and one of the guys there said i might be having a problem with the idol control valve. Anyone have any advice. im hoping its not, it was $896 and ill buy a new motor before that

Phoenix7 09-09-2008 06:19 PM

mistake #1 taking advice from ppl at Autozone/kragen's or any local auto shop.

Look at the list Vex gave you and start diagnosing
http://rotarycarclub.com/showthread.php?t=1790

Check your TPS, your timing, and do a tune up. That shouldn't cost too much. Once everything is within specs you can figure out what needs to be replaced.

I know they are all fools, but this guy does know some things.

It's your car. THey always seem to KNOW something.

Just don't buy anything until you're sure it's broken.

Ask him how many rx-7s he's owned.

If he says 1 or less, don't listen to him at all.

Whizbang 09-10-2008 01:59 PM

what kind of shape is the air intake sensor and the coolant temp sensor on the back of the thermostat housing in?

Jeff4764 09-11-2008 08:19 AM

well coolant temp sensor was not it, air intake sensor works, i checked both last night. now im thinkin coils, but im not positive.

Compression Numbers!
:banghead:

Whizbang 09-11-2008 08:22 AM

or at least a poor mans compression test.
