Wiper switch rebuilds

Okay, so I know Icemark from the other forum offers rebuilds for miscellaneous electrics for 2nd gens for price. I've had no problems with him and I don't intend to start a flame thread here but I'm wondering of the alternatives for a wiper switch rebuild- is there anybody here that does rebuilds or know of any competent, respectable shops that handle it?

I know I can rebuild my own switch but really can't be bothered to take out the relays and hope somebody can just help out. Also, I know that this a fairly common problem on the FCs and it would be a good thing to find another vendor for this service.

Just for the record, I have a S5 wiper switch w/ rear wiper that died on me some months back.

1990 GTX offered me rebuilt switches. I'm sure the offer extends to you all too.

i am actually curious about what is there to be rebuilt. i may have to take a bad one apart since i love to tinker.

Phoenix7, think we could get him to chime in here?

It's those relays inside the switches that go. My car has some grounding issues that I intend to fix and I suspect that it contributed to the frying of the wiper switch internals. Icemark apparently rebuilds them with better relays; I'm just hoping we can get reliable relays that can beat the stock ones.

yeah, I sent him the link to this thread. :dunno: I'm gonna ship out my S5 TII ecu to replace his blown one.

so all there is to do is change relays for the wiper switch??? cause im having the same problem with my 88 n/a lol

My5ABaby 09-16-2008 06:10 AM

I think Icemark used to redo the internal relays, but if I'm not mistaken, I believe he said the company that was selling the upgrades internal relays no longer does. However, you can put on an external relay pretty easily.

maui_boi 09-16-2008 01:23 PM

and how u do that???

yeti 09-17-2008 09:40 AM

I need this done along with my clock.. because I'm tired of trying to fix my clock only to have it work for a few days.

Whizbang 09-17-2008 09:41 AM

i want a one of those gauge pods to just release that entire thing

yeti 09-17-2008 06:25 PM

If I had more spare time and a little money and a hiar more experience then you'd get one.. I'd like to get into fibre glassing some more.

My5ABaby 09-18-2008 06:19 AM

It appears the relays are still up on Icemark's site so I'm not sure where I got that. Maybe I'm losing it...

I believe the s5 has the new relay, the s4's have the old problem relay. Doesn't mean your relay didn't go bad. If you wanna save money, order the relay through Icemark and rebuild it yourself if you can solder. If not spend the $75 for one of his.

Phoenix7 09-19-2008 02:11 PM

 well I don't think he'd ever ship anything to "Hassell" so I know that's out of the question!

I'd rather spend MORE money anywhere else than give it to our Icy friend.

well then who on here does the electrical fixes ?

Both S4s and S5s are subject to the problem... Here's a quick synopsis of the problem:

There are two relays in the switch. One is for parking the wipers at the bottom of the glass, the other is for high/low speed selection. (There is a 3rd relay in rear wiper cars.) The main problem with these switches is that the relays are rated at the exact amount of power that the wiper motor takes. The relays are in a case that is two pieces put together. Since it's two pieces, there is a split between the two parts and that allows moisture to get in. The moisture corrodes the contacts inside the relay and breaks them down. In the end they do not pass power to the wiper motor.

The updated relays are completely sealed and are rated a for a little higher than the old relays.

I will try and post up a pic later...

If you have the proper equipment, you can desolder the relays and add in new ones... However I caution you that the board is 20+ years old. It is very easy to toast the circuit board and turn the switch into a melted pile of crap.

If you have board level soldering experience. It's fairly straight forward.

You'll need the following relay part numbers:
Z950-ND - (2 for rear wiper cars, 1 if you don't have a rear wiper)
Z1012-ND (Only 1 needed)

It'll take about an hour to dismantle the switch and an hour to put it back together if you do it properly... Or you can cut the hell out of the plastic covering. But that just looks unprofessional and kinda crappy.

I started doing the FC electronics repair since I bought an FC last year with the wiper and headlight switch problems.

Since Icemark passed last year, I have also been doing the repairs for others. I am an electronics technician for my day job, and have a fully equipped electronics workbench both at home and at my work place. I have temperature controlled soldering irons, vacuum powered automatic desoldering equipment, and silver epoxy for damaged circuit board repair.

PM me if you want me to deal with your switch.
