Too much oil going to turbo?
Ok, so right now I've got oil coming out of my exhaust. Could this be caused by having too much oil going into the turbo? I've also got some oil coming out of the intake side of the turbo. I've got a T04S turbo. How can I restrict the amount of oil going into my turbo? I think I've got a restrictor pill. How would I remove it if it were too small? Also, where can I get new pills?

no sorry that means your turbo seals are blown... You will have to rebuild the turbo now.. or replace

Ok, so will that prevent oil from leaking out of the exhaust and the intake?

no dont drive the car, you are pushing oil into the intercooler and into your engine through the throttle body and you are running low on oil cause it is burning out of the exhaust..
the car is not driveable until the turbo has been rebuilt.. if u rebuild the turbo or replace it that will fix this problem |

leaking.. from where.. u mean leaking into the intercooler pipe or out the exhaust... NO. this is the reason.. it is a common problem with turbos in general they wear and the seals leak..

if there is NO restricter or too large a line, then the oil pressure will push passed the seals. BUT if you already have a restricter then there is another issue at hand

I have never heard of needing a restrictor.. that IMO is just heresay.. I have ran MANY turbo cars in my life some with stock and some with high flow turbos and NEVER ran a restrictor.. hell I never heard fo them till I started coming here.
I think if the oil is passing through the seals then that means there is weak seals and u need to rebuild the turbo. |
i have had to deal with problem on a few cars. There are quite a few turbos that have built in restricters as well.

I have yet to run into this before.. I have dealt with many KK, turbo technics, Garrett, mitsu, hitachi, cummings turbo and NONE have I ever had this kind of problem..
IMO you need to rebuild your turbo.. pull the air snorkle off the front of the turbo (the snorkle that runs to the air filter) grab ahold of the nut by hand and see if you can move the whele in/out, up/down if there is play its done. |
No play, the turbo is brand new. I just put it on not too long ago.

did u check the play NOW.. since the problem has occured? Just cause the turbo is new dont mean that it is in good shape or that the build was good.

Yea, I checked it just now. No play at all. Could it be possible that it's a restrictor pill and how do I put one in?

and you have oil in your intercooler pipes?

Small Frame turbo's can be overoiled and have the seals blown - esp journal bearing ones... the restrictor could work to fix it as is. But a rebuild would also not be a bad idea... I know it sucks that it is a brand new snail; but I would rather take it all off once and fix it for sure; than take it off 30 times trying to cheap out.

The T04 is a ball bearing turbo and as such should not be seeing oil pressure above about 45psi. A 3rd gen's oil pressure regulator is 80+ psi so the oil inlet line would require a restrictor. Side effects of no restrictor would be as you described.

How should I put a restrictor in the line?

My BNRs have small oil holes and they oiled a bit when they were new .Brian thought they were getting to much pressure so I made a restrictor for each turbo and one for the banjo bolt at the feed line .That fixed the problem .They have been running for 49k miles now on syn oil .They are stage threes super sized .

Rx7 store sells a restrictor and a feed line kit for a very reasonable price last time I checked. You can also use the factory boost restrictor pills if you get creative. I would just buy the kit from rx7store. I have had this problem with larger turbos in the past. There is very little exhaust pressure at idle from the rotary for these big turbos and it common to see oil go shooting out the turbine/exhaust side of the turbo.
With it being a new turbo, Im fairly certain a restrictor will fix the issue for you. |
I had to run a restrictor on my brand new turbo to get it to stop smoking...so yeah, it can be a problem. I used the restrictor from RX7store but their line is WAY too long for my needs. I had to use a fitting to get the restrictor to work cause it was too small for my turbo, but it works regardless.

Get a nitrous nozzle and grind it down.

I had tried a nitrous nozzle before, I don't suggest that. Of course, if I'd put alot more work into it, I suppose it could have worked haha. Basically mine got mashed and became useless, allowing oil to blow by anyway.

I use an actual AN fitting as mine; but I was recommending a cheap fix... LOL

Oh I hear ya man. That's what I was going for when I put it in there, but it didn't work for me. I've seen others do it that way, but it didn't work for me when I tried it. I decided to make my AN fitting work.

I drilled an allen set screw and threaded the placement and then I can remove the set screw and redrill for more oil or replace for less oil .How easy is this .

No cost and eazy to do plus adjustable .Life is good .
