So I weighed my FB tonight...
In the middle of a *ahem* "sporting drive" I happened upon an easy way to hit the truckstop on I-5 by my house, so I figured what the hell. Stock 1983 RX-7 GSL with power windows/mirrors, cruise, A/C, glass sunroof, and full emissions intact with a full tank of fuel (minus about a gallon from the station to the scale) and the spare, jack, etc still inside.
2,650 Lbs. Considering I weigh about 235 at the moment that's not bad! So 2,415 for an all-stock, fully-loaded FB, with a full tank. Figure I run it at about 1/3 tank in the autocross, plus no roof/spare/jack/spare oil/etc. Gas weighs 6.15Lbs/gallon, so take out 60Lbs of gas, and maybe 25Lbs for the roof/spare/etc and it's maybe 2,565Lbs when I autocross. I'll re-weigh it as I take stuff out (A/C, emissions, exhaust, interior stuffs). I'd like to get it around 215Lbs out to bring it to 2,200 without me and under 2,500 with me. So figure the A/C stuff weighs quite a bit, same with the smog pump and the factory exhaust manifold. Also relocating the battery and replacing it with a lighter one, also going to a lighter interior insulation and seats. Should be doable, right? |
those are incriments of 50, so pretend its 2601 ;-)
|
Damn, that is really light.
Kind of off-topic, but can you go to any truckstop and get a car weighed or do you know someone there or something? |
The emissions parts and AC do weigh a ton. I couldn't believe how heavy that shit was when I pulled it all off. Not a bad weight for an SE...
Oh yeah, and get rid of the cast iron water pump housing while you're at it. The 2nd gen came with an alloy version and will bolt right up for the most part. |
Actually they are increments of 20, but it kept flashing back and forth between 40 and 60 so I said 50.
You don't have to know anybody, just drive right through. Obviously there was nobody there on a Saturday night, so I didn't upset anybody. The scales are always on. And mine isn't an SE. It's a plain-jane 12A powered GSL, albeit heavily optioned (I believe leather and the auto trans are the only things missing). |
Makes me want to weigh mine. No emissions or AC, some engine bay simplification, and a lightweight exhaust, but it does have a 13B. The aluminum water pump housing and the Weber setup probably shave off several pounds.

That is light...My FB without me in it weighs 2600lbs...But I do have a 13BT and a/c :D
|
You can get it there. My last 84 GSL build that I did weighed 2242lbs with me in it. I was about 220lbs then, and this was with a full tank of fuel (15-16 gallons in a fuel cell). My interior was gutted, lightweight racing seats, underneath the dash was gutted, spare tire and jack, engine compartment was cleaned out, even went down to installing carbon fiber pedals. On 100 shot of tha juice, the car dyno'd at 409 whp. Needless to say, it was a fun little car.

Mine is 2430lbs. with me(~190), a few tools and less than a quarter tank. I'd guess it's 2200lbs. empty. '85 base with an '87 6port.

You can go to any truckstop and scale your car. Most you will have to pay the scale fee which is usually between $7-$10. The attendants dont care, as long as you pay.
My buddy Sam and I weighed our cars at the Flying J in town and it came out as 2240 for his car and 2480 for mine. Full tanks and spare and jack in and without us in the cars. A few reasons why my car is so much heavier are I have a Sterling, and if you've ever picked up a Nikki you know they are rather heavy, and he only has ITB's which are fairly light. I have a full RB SP dual exhaust, whereas he has an SDJ header and thin piping. His car has most of the useless wiring stripped and I don't. He has the RE-Speed R&P kit and I still have stock steering (not for long though:) ). He has a Mariah front bumper which requires the removal of the stock steel bumper in place of a thinner, smaller metal frame. Mines stock. I also have a Rockford 400 Watt amp and he is using one or two much smaller amps and no rear speakers. |
the last time I weighed my car was at the Toledo Pro Solo.
It scaled @2016 lbs. with 1/4 tank of gas, no interior except for the dash and a 15lb. race seat. I swaped out the steel sa bumpers for aluminum fb bumpers but used a hole saw to drill 2" holes in the aluminum to lighten it even more. theres no emissions or a/c or power steering on the car. i also have very light 13 x 7 panasports with hoosier cantilevered slicks. the car was weighed without me in it so you could add 220 lbs. to get the wieght down more I plan on gutting the doors and replacing the glass with lexan. |

ive put a couple on the scales over the years.
stock 83 LE, full tank, empty drivers seat, 2330, thats with full smog, and ac stock 79, its a GS, but no a/c, same deal full fuel, no driver, i think it was like 2440ish, maybe 2380? lol |
UPDATE!!!
Same car, now with RB header and 2.5" exhaust (no cat but does have resonator and muffler), RB air filter assembly, no smog pump, no A/C (compressor, brackets, condenser, lines, wiring), 3/4 tank, with my fat butt and the glass roof: 2540Lbs The glass roofs weighs 15Lbs and I weigh 230Lbs. So with a 1/4 tank, no roof, no spare/jack/tools/oil it should weigh 2500 with me in it. Nice. |
Weighed mine a few months ago. 2550 with me and 3/4 tank. I'm 205.
No emissions or A/C. Power options, and some stereo equip, glass sunroof. '82 GSL. Never would have guessed it was so light! I'm used to crossing the scales around 4k in my Camaro and Jeep! Gotta love power to weight! PS Thanks for the info on this site P71! -Paul |
Hey Paul, nice to see you here.
|
my '83 Toyota ae71 'rolla coupe sr-5 (rwd) weighs in @ about 2,230lbs (via truck scale on i5 sb, just before 128th st exit), w/o me (165lbs)...no a/c and all 5 rear windows are lexan (each lexan window weighs LESS than 50% of original glass...i weighed each piece..) i know its not an RX....wish it was...been tryn to sell/trade...grrr.
|
