Ok guys and gals, a lot time planning for this day and it has finally come. I have owned the car for a bit over a year now. Bought it with 36K on it and well really have not driven it due to this work not being done.
My stock 93 SSM with 38k stock miles getting some work to make her last longer. Keep in mind I am not looking for HP but more dependable good power. Once complete here is what will be done and staying Sequential. I will be trying to take pics of everything done and will be posting them. So first to come....... my car in stock trim currently with: SSR rims Front cross drilled rotors Petit AST - coming off going AST delete New Poly motor mounts Stainless Steel Brake lines Eibach springs 99 Spec rear lamps RB single tip cat back Xcessive alum oil pan - Coming off going back to stock |
Whats to come:

ok here are some beginning pics:
Motor getting ready for removal. Note the second pic on the driver side frame rail from where the battery sits.hard to get to area to keep clean. Well I will have to clean that up before the motor goes back in. |

pictures of motor out and the frame rails painted in a black bed liner coating to help with rust/scratches. There was a seem that I followed to keep it uniform on both sides.
Time to replace every water hose under the hood (those that I will be keeping) all gaskets, studs/nuts on turbos and some other small odds and ends. Ray at Mazda sent me a box of goodies for almost $700 needed to do this work. |
Turbo work

Here are some before pictures once the turbos were pulled off. See all the cracks and where the gasket sits. Now to basically gasket match the turbos and that will help with some cracks. The others will have to be welded.

great condition car!

Turbo worked performed by Garfinkle Motor Works (Thanks David)
You can see the cracks have been welded, some grinding has been done, and see the black spots in the flat surfaces (low spots due to warping). Those will be resurfaced to get some/most of that taken out. Here are those pics |

My cheap Radiator that I had to modify the shroud to fit. Had to use bolts and nuts to mount it on the bottom and had to open up the holes on the shroud top sine it all was not lining up perfect.
Then I had to notch the shroud since the upper tube was at a different angle over the stock location (seen in the next group of pics). If you buy one of these keep in mind that its not a direct drop in nor does it have a drain or a line for the AST. If I would had known about this up front I would have spent more for the right one. But again $150 for this was not too bad even with the mods I had to do. |

Here is my motor sitting there now with the turbos back on.

See you decided to pull the motor. Makes the work you are doing a lot easier. David is the turbo porting master. Work looks great.

Also garfinkle completed this thing...... cant remember what it is called but it sure did clean up and loose a few tubes that were not being used anymore

This picture is where the Master Polisher David gave me a few pointers on how to polish, so I sand blasted 3 parts and started to polish one...... not complete but not bad looking for my first time. It was cool to see the part coming to life.
Did not think it took that long to work one part nor that much sanding to make it look good. Last two pictures is that of the tube that goes to the rear turbo. Garfinkle polished it (cleaned up a little) and some of the unwanted mounts were cut off and sanded out. Became a clean slick looking part! Sorry but I was excited to get it on the car or I would have taken pics before I mounted it. |

What BOV will you be using and where will it mount? |

Sorry for no new pics, my build has hit a slump, and time is killing me right now. I will have to bring it back home in a week or two finished or not. Lets hope time is my friend these next two weeks.
More pics to come as it moves on. There are alot of mods from Garfinkle Motorworks that have been done that I need to post. He reinforced my sway bar mounts and they are built like a tank now. Man did Mazda fail on that mount! |
The stock sway bar mounts are horrible!!!! Mine were bent and cracked when I switched them out with my widefoot ones?

wow, has time gone by.
Well just to update everyone I got back on the car 3 days ago. Had everything back on and ready to load it up to take it to get tuned. Well sad story is that it tried to catch on fire - fuel circuit / wiring issue somewhere. Now to let the pros figure that out and fix it for me. Hope to be back up running soon................ |
Wow, this is impressive! I like the neatness of your build, and how you invested money in all the right components. Also, that turbo work must have cost you a kidney, right? I didn't even know it was possible to weld those turbos back up and machine them like that.
|
Update:
Took the car to Tweak It Racing in Symrna to have it finished. Dan and Brian have put alot of time into this car and have found the following issues wrong with her. 1.They found that the car had the o rings missing on the injectors and filled the motor up with fuel. Thats fixed.... 2.They found the wiring that tried to catch my car on fire. New coil harness, coils relocated back to the OEM spot and thats fixed...... 3. Now the turbos are shot. Primary is not boosting and secondary is blowing smoke from sitting in gas for 3 months. Hope soon to have the issues worked out and car back on the road. |
Man I hate that for you. I was wondering what was going on with this build. Your car only had 38k on clock right? How did all this happen. Its good you moved your coils back to the stock location. Your mounting location was right next to your steering rack, which is about the worst place you could have put them. Besides you never hear of the FD having a problem burning out coils with the stock set up. I think someone was just trying to sell you something.
How did your turbos go out so quick? Your car is mostly stock right? Unless you run high boost the stock turbos are almost always good for 80 to 100k. I know hind sight is 20/20 but i think your biggest mistake was going that deep into a prestine FD to begin with. That and not having someone with you who is knowledgeable about FDs to help you out. Well I hope you get it all sorted out and start enjoying your 7 again. |

miles 38K miles stock. As for the coils, it had plenty of clearance from the rack and that was the least of my concerns. It was being under the FPR and the wire going to the TII coil done wrong that I was concerned with. Turbos were soaked in fuel for 2-3 months as the injector O-rings were missing which filled up the turbos and motor with gas. It was not a mistake to go into the car, the mistake was not just taking care of my true concern and just enjoying the car. As for not having some one with me, well I actually did but thats neither here nor there now. |
ok, a few lessons learned!
What not to do!!!!! 1. Dont move the coils to the frame rail. Why not you ask? Well FD coils typically dont go out. Not only that but it was a directly under my FPR if it should have ever leaked fuel. Now if you dont have these issues or concerns then go ahead. 2. Dont upgrade to a T2 coil unless your very careful when splicing the wire. Mine was upgraded and the person who did the wiring grabbed a small shielding wire and crimped it into the hot lead. Over a short time it melted the wires and shorted them out within seconds of causing an engine fire. I was lucky that it was in the drive way with hood up or I woul dhave never seen the black/green smoke. 3. Dont run the stock belt on a air pump delete kit. It allows the pulley on the kit to barely rub the flexible intake tube causing a hole. make sure to go down to a smaller size. Over the last 2-3 months I have had to redo all the vacuum lines back to stock to try and trouble shoot all the small issues which should be fixed. Once I get a good set of turbos (looking into rebuilds) on the car I will hopefully be back up and running. I would be lost with out all the help of Dan and Brian at Tweak It Racing in Smyrna. They have found everything listed above, corrected it and have the car closer to being back on the road soon. Thanks Tweak It guys!!!!!!!! |
