NoPis1O's Build Thread

Heres a little taste. Still trying to work out a couple kinks but its coming along.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...29_2220109.jpg

Hey RCC
I have been on this Fourm for a while some of you might know my Lowered Fc vert. fairly stock car i like to auto cross and have funn with. Well last week i picked up a 1989 fc gxl with a Individual carbed 13b with a couple mods.
Story behind the car: it was built by a guy in st louis,MO and i guess he like to drag race it. go figure. but then he sold it and it has since passed threw a couple hands to me. The people who bought it from him burnt the clutch and never fixed it. when i got the car oil and tranny fluid looked like it came straight out of the bottle. so im guessing they burnt the clutch way before they could poorly matain it. so kindof a blessing.

Here is what the car looks like now and where my Journey begins. I have already pulled the engine and tranny. im going to replace the clutch( which i have already purchased) resurface the flywheel (which is a 8 pound unknown aftermarket one) then clean and paint the engine bay before it goes back in. I have pictures of the pull but dont have them on my computer yet.

PS if anyone recognizes the car and knows who built it i would love to talk with him. (or if any board members who live in st louis want to do some research that would be awesome.)

Here is how she Sat when i got her.

You have an S4 shifter and shift knob in there. Just thought you'd like to know .

Fixed ;) I hate the S5 shifter/knob.

Max777 03-06-2009 12:15 AM

Ok, two things again:

1: fail to give proper credit for working my ass off pulling the engine
2: didn't post pics of the old clutch.

verdict: still fail. :D

RETed 03-06-2009 12:56 AM

That thing is...hideous.
It looks like someone got pissed off at the stock fuel injection and decided to convert it to a downdraft.

Carb needs to be rebuilt?
It's leaking FUEL all over the place...
The car doesn't reek of gasoline???

Good luck tuning the carb and changing out points!
That MSD is gonna eat distro points for breakfast...

You autocross this thing?
The stock AAS is still intact.

Max777 03-06-2009 01:11 AM

yeah, the "got pissed at the FI setup" was my guess too! Especially from how ghetto-fabbed some of the work is!

I think that there must have been two people who built this thing:

The first, who did shit proper, and the second who half assed OVER a lot of the good work already done.

Example: The distributor was HARD WIRED into the body electrical harness, there was no connector at all.

As far as the points through: does it have em? I didn't see any "points" only a magnetic pick up when I took it apart, so I dunno what points you're talking about Ted....

Whizbang 03-06-2009 02:44 AM

that intake filter thing is a bit hokey though

RETed 03-06-2009 03:05 AM

It has to be points?
I see 6 boots on top of the distributor cap.
4 are for spark plugs to the engine, and 2 are for the two coils - leading and trailing.
This is the same set-up for carb'd / distro'd 12A engines on 1st gens.

Then you're retarded. The S5 shifter has a different thread pitch than the S4's and supports more after market shift knobs.

I prefer the S4 shift knob over anything else. The S5 one feels and looks odd to me, and I'm just not a fan of most aftermarket knobs.

There are points. your right they do look a little warn.
And yes i am going to autocross this car.

We just pulled the rest of the harness and other crap out and spit shined the engine bay. getting ready to sand and paint in the next couple of days.

Max777 03-09-2009 03:19 PM

Bobby, I told ya those are not points, the distributor has magnetic pickup coils like the second generation CAS sensor. Here are the pics I took, and there are no points in there unless I'm missing something???

vex 03-09-2009 07:39 PM

They're points.

Max777 03-09-2009 08:15 PM

Ok, can you please point them out to me? (no pun intended) I thought that this is a magnetic pick up coil distributor?

... and WTF is nambla??

EDIT: Dude, that's just sick, what the hell?

vex 03-09-2009 08:58 PM

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...C/DSCN4200.jpg The pieces up top are a give away as to it being points. The metal pieces on the upper side of the "tree" make contact with the specific points which then transfers the energy from the coil to the spark plug which is struck.

Max777 03-09-2009 09:13 PM

Umm, ok, I get what you mean, but I have never heard of those being called "points" isnt that just the distributor rotor?

I thought you meant BEAKER points, like these, which the dizzy obviously doesn't have, proving what I'm trying to say.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...stributor2.jpg

No matter what was actually being called "points" or whatever, usually when someone mentions "points" on a distributor they are talking about breaker points. Breaker points "Break" the ignition circuit every time the distirutor cam pushes them apart. They are a very outdated design that usually cant handle high rpm application well, so with time, the breaker points were replaced with a magetic pickup coil. It functions simillarly, but does not have any parts to wear since the trigger wheel does not touch the pickup itself.

I dont recall what the part you are talking about is called, but they are just contact "points" on the distributor rotor that yes, do wear with time, but that is just the way a distributor is designed.

On the other hand, breaker points are very well known to wear, usually lasting no more than 30,000 miles on an average passenger car. however, this distributor does not have them.

Conclusion: We are arguing about two different things. When RTED mentioned "points" I thought he meant a breaker point type distributor, which this one isnt, and made that comment. You are saying he meant something else. I'm not trying to say you both were wrong, but my statement about this being a magnetic pickup coil type dizzy is still correct.

I'm don't know everything, but I'm shure as hell trying to learn, so please teach me anything you know about this matter, thank you.

Nopis1O 03-11-2009 01:23 PM

Does anyone know what you have to do to make 350z wheels fit on a fc?

Max777 03-11-2009 02:00 PM

I do!

Step 1: Throw 350z wheels in garbage

Step 2: Buy some cast aluminum replica wheels in any desired size or offset.

Step 3: Look good and save a bunch of money on your car insurance with geico!

...but really, you need to machine out the center bore, and use spacers, and still have wheels that look terrible on the FC.

Whizbang 03-11-2009 02:03 PM

rx8 wheels look way too much like Z wheels and would actually fit pretty easily.

Max777 03-11-2009 02:06 PM

/\ It's just that there is someone that's selling 350z wheels locally for kinda cheap, but I still dont think that it's worth the money, especially with the machining, i'm not sure on how that would affect structural integrity?

RETed 03-12-2009 06:33 AM

Sorry, then it's my fault.
I always though "distributor" = "points".
I never knew there were distributors without points.
Apologies for the confusion...

-Ted

Max777 03-12-2009 10:01 PM

Yay, I taught the almighty RETed something new! :D

But seriously, the distributor system is way outdated anyway, and if you mostly work with modern Hi-Performance EFI systems, then it's not unusual for people to not be as knowledgeable about the older distributor system.

A good example is how I have very little experience with carburators, drum brakes, and steam engines. :D

Nopis1O 03-14-2009 01:46 AM

update. Got the front suspension on tonight and putting the rest on tomorrow morning. i will post pics when its done.

anyone know of a good site, person, place to buy 5mm spacers from?

Nopis1O 03-14-2009 11:24 AM

DGRR IS COMING TO SOOOOOOOOON. IDK if i can get this done. i dont want to hurry. i might do everything but paint and still go. ha.

bigtony08 03-14-2009 07:17 PM

hope you make it i wanna see how the car turns out. good luck

Nopis1O 03-15-2009 02:35 AM

thanks suspension is on. looks good. i will post pics when im not drunk and tired

Max777 03-15-2009 11:54 PM

Yeah, suspension was pretty fun to install.

It seems like the front shocks have had lowering springs installed on them or something, because when we put the rear coupe (softer) suspension on his vert, it sat WAY up back there. Good thing I got an extra set of vert springs laying around! :D
