s5 thermostat housing plastic piece on N/A's
I'm looking for the interchangeability between s5 an s4 thermostat housings.
I searched a very little bit, didn't find much. Anyway, as some of us know the plastic piece that's right on top of the thermostat on s5 N/A's isn't very reliable. I found out this morning that mine is cracked an leaking. I believe it has been leaking for a few weeks. And In fear of it blowing (which I've heard and seen happen before) I wrapped it in electrical tape (which I've seen done an it works for a temporary fix..) So I have 3 options, they also have an expense factor, I don't want to pay alot. #1. Swap it with the one on my s4 N/A. (If that's interchangeable.) ($:Free) #2. Get a new one from a parts store. ($: probably most expensive) #3. Make one out of metal. ($:cheap) So my first question is: Are s5/s4 thermostat pieces interchangeable? My second question is: Which option should I do?, since this car is my daily driver, and I need it to run, and I want to get this done this weekend. |
1. Not interchangable s4= 2bolt s5= 3 bolt
2. You won't find one at a parts store. 3. There are one or two people that make metal ones for around $100, with one of them having a recent thread on this forum. They aren't complete yet but they are probably your best bet. you could probably put a s4 water pump housing and water pump which would get you the metal housing |
As far as I know the S4 & S5 houings are interchangable. I have two laying around if you're interested, one of them has a waterpump with 1,207 miles on it and is painted black - the whole housing.
I think making one would be more time than it's worth. By the time you cut up the flanges, get the needed pipine, miter cuts, welding etc etc etc.... |
Mazdatrix sells an aluminum version.
$150 http://www.mazdatrix.com/b8.htm http://www.mazdatrix.com/getprice.as...m=15-1720-ALUM They are not interchangable between Zenki and Kouki FC's. The bolt patterns are different - 2-bolt versus 3-bolt. BTW, turbo versus non-turbo are the same part numbers for the same series. -Ted |

HOUSINGS Ted, not the neck, the ENTIRE waterpump housings (which includes the waterpump along with the neck) ARE interchangeable. Reading comp.......
The only potential difference between two n/a waterpump HOUSINGS might be the therm sensor threads are different and a coolant hose might be in a slightly different location. Both of which are easy fixes. On my RE, I fit an S4,5, and S6 waterpump housings. S6 needs longer studs and S6 e-shaft pulley to work though. |
Thanks for the reply's.
I agree that the thermostat housing/covers are NOT interchangeable. And the water pump housings, are interchangeable. Ive checked around for prices on thermostat housings/covers, and they're ridiculous expensive. So I'm going for a home-made one. Under $20?:) It hasn't blown apart yet, its just leaking. If it blows before I get one made, Ill switch the water pump housings. I am very near a hardware store, so I can get the tubing, an a metal plate this afternoon, then Ill have to get holes cut in the plate, the pipe welded to the plate and make a diameter change in the tube. Does anyone know what the measurement is of the piece we are talking about? I think It has 2 different size diameters. The base where the thermostat connection is a little bit wider than where the hose is connected. Then there is the length. |

The water pumps are specific to the water pump housings. You cannot fit an S4 water pump to and S5 water pump housing and vice versa. Also, one of the combinations will not fit due to the front oil cover not having the correct "dent" to fit. (I think S4 water pump housing fits on an S5 front oil cover but not the other way around.) SO YOU'RE STILL WRONG. Like I said before, stop spreading misinformation if you're not sure. -Ted |
Ted is right, they're not interchangeable.
However, I'm making some aluminum S5 water necks with rad caps on top like the S4's for bleeding and also with two spots for different sized after market water temperature sensors. They should be done pretty soon and will be for sale for around $70 or so. |
Well I took off this thermostat piece an measured the diameters.
I got some materials, 1/4" weld plate steel, (Ive got enough to make 3 more of these things.) 1ft of iron pipe (enough to make one more of this), an a adapter. Next I need to do some cutting an grinding. So far this cost me $15. And all that's next is cutting, grinding, and welding. btw: This thing is going to be heavy-duty, just from the looks of the material. lol. |

Also, the S6 waterpump assembly will fit on a cosmo. How do I know this, becuase I've done it. If you want to get your panties in a bunch ted, you're wrong in saying they are not interchangeable. Maybe waterpumps and housings aren't, I am CERTAIN of that, but assemblies are. Stop spreading misinformation. Jeez, are we done now? If you're planning on making a water neck out of steel, I would make certain that it is coated EXTREMELY well. There is a chance that it could create a wee bit of electrolsis. Probably me just being paranoid from so many years (almost 20 now) being in and around the marine world. |
Thank you for clearing that up Titanium.
Yes, I will coat it. With what, Im not sure yet. Ideas? On another note... I'm not sure of my materials. They will make this thing bulky and "heavy-duty". I was thinking of using exhaust pipe but thought of the rusting factor. It would definitely need coating. And since its thin pipe, it would be easier to work with. The iron pipe I have is thick, 1/8-1/4", to much to work with. Also, the plate I have is a 1/4" thick and is the most expensive item so far. I all ready have a 1/8" thick plate I used for block off plates. I will have to get shorter bolts if i go with the 1/8". I will look at some exhaust pipe before I start cutting away. Not sure what I was thinking yesterday. The diameters of pipe I was looking at were all off, reason for the adapter. Pictures will be coming. |
I'd make it out of aluminum. Then again, I have a TIG.
Maybe the thing to do instead is make an adapter out of AL. 3/8" thick should do it. Recessed holes to bolt to the S5 housing and studs that allow you to bolt an S4 neck on. |
Thats why the ones I'm getting made up are being made in aluminum :).
P.S. This is Flooder, forgot to logout, haha. |
One note about putting the S4 water-pump "assembly" onto the S5 motor:
NOT with the OMP still in place! It does fit, but you have to block off the omp, and this is a bitch because you either need an RTEK chip, or a standalone... however, now that I do have both RTEK and blocked off OMP, i'm considering doing the S4 swap. |
I got some exhaust tubing pieces and have cut & grinded them down so they are at a 45* angle.
Thanks to some other annoyances I'm still working on this. Still I need ideas of what to coat this thing with. High-temp paint?, epoxy? what? I'm going to make this thing last a lifetime. lol. |
That's what I would do

I had it welded at a welding shop I found down the road, nice ppl. I painted it w/engine paint. Total cost came to $40. And it doesn't leak.:icon_tup: |
what did you do about the inside? are your worried about corrosion?
|
I was gonna say, that's TIG welded. It you were going to have it welded, I DEFINATELY would've gone with aluminum and not worried about corrosion (as much)
|
Inside is painted too.
2 things I don't like are, the coolant hose is stretched over the neck, and its a little to high, my homemade strut tower bar won't fit over the hose. lol, I have a feeling the home-made modifications on this car will pick-up this year. I have ignored a lot of things. Yet this car runs great, I love it. Some mods might be: remoded CAI, OMP lines, redo block-off plates (ones on there are rusting.), grounding, etc. |
Well, I got my S5 water neck brand new for $60 from Atkins Rotary, and with your's being $40, it's cool as heck!

I KNOW the S5 "assembly" with NOT fit on an S4 front oil cover. Why don't you admit you're _)@$%_)$ wrong. -Ted |
thats badass. sure beats the shitty stock plastic

Come on guys let's leave the "other forum" disputes on the other forum? however I do apreciate that this didn't blow up too much.

You post such BS, it's not even funny. You claim I've *NEVER* backed down and "I'm always right." I've admitted I've fucked up a lot of times on the other forum - it's convenient that you don't seem to recall any of those times. I've never see YOU admit you're wrong - pot calling the kettle black? There's even a recent post about distributors and points that I've cleared admitted I fucked up. Open yours eyes before you go accusing people WRONGLY like you're doing to me. -Ted |
Take that crap to the Lounge!
Half of this thread would have been deleted if I was still a Mod. |
