FujiRacing 13B Rotary Miata Build
2 Attachment(s)
We are doing a Rotary swap in our Miata and wanted to show how it is done. We will be using the Miata in Time Attack events. Here is a little background on our Miata. 184 WHP Naturally Aspirated on Pump Gas, No other Miata has ever come close on pump gas In October of 2008 we won the overall Street Tire Class at VIR in the Redline Time Attack beating the M3 track record by over 2 seconds and beating the runner-up S2000 by over 2 seconds. Not only that we beat the AWD class cars and all the FWD cars like the EVO,STI,Integra, and Civic.
Then in July 2009 we won Modified at Nashville and a Viper was runner up. Then at Englishtown we beat a Solstice, Z06, and a 240SX. Some very well know drivers were in some of those cars. Then in Sept. of 2009 we went to Hallet Raceway on a 1.8 mile circuit and set the fastest time on 100 UTQG tires. The closest forced induction Miata's were over 3 seconds behind. All that was done with the Piston Motor. The Miata motor is good but not a World Class motor like the Rotary on the HP circuits. I will be working with Raul Rodriguez on the 13B engine swap. Ricardo Rivera will be making the custom mounts. Attached is pictures of the car and engine we will be using 250~280 WHP Semi-PP is our goal with ITB's. |
Should prove to be a fun ride.
So the goal of this is really to maintain the pump gas stipulation while jumping up another 70-100whp? I'm interested in this build as its something I'd like to do someday.. Good luck! |
Great project, my dream project one day I hope. Good luck!
|
Any plans to keep the mounts and oil pan modification designs for a possible swap kit? I know there isn't much around any more for a rotary swap for a miata and it would raise some eyebrows...

Thanks! Basically we want to be just as fast if not faster in the corners. The Miata is so light that too much power just doesn't work and the extra 70~100 whp is for the straights. We want to go after the track record in class at Buttonwillow CW#13 with a [B]MAZDA[B] which is the benchmark track in the U.S. for the Time Attack. We may not stay with pump gas.
Attached is the motor we will use for the test fit for the custom Engine brackets. |

EFI or Carb? Rotaries and Miatas are meant for eachother!
Just for giggles, here's my buddy's (Fris @ Lucky7Racing) Rotary Miata http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...2a77e79e26.jpg http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...23f14d3784.jpg http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...7e918207cb.jpg It's has EFI now: http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...46bdcb07ee.jpg Good luck on your build! |

Nice! I agree that Rotary engine is made for the Miata. We will be using our ITB's and go EFI using either Megasquirt or Microtech. Attached is pics of the AR-F Anniversary Racing Factory ITB kit that is the same as ours. I took the picture in Japan back in 2004. The one with the green intake manifold is my customer Sam's with our RX7 ITB kit. And our Miata.
|
Awesome stuff. Makes me want to build a super miata!
|
Nice!
Was kind of confused on your signature in your email heh. Looking forward to seeing the end result. Some of the prepped FI miatas run 1:55s around ButtonWillow on nt01s. I think with this setup you'll be able to grab the record. It'll give everyone something to shoot for! What are you doing with your old BP cams, high CR pistons, the AEM EMS? |
With our 184 WHP on NT01's from what we gathered from a fellow competitor that ran 2:00 minutes on street tires that we had beaten we would have been close to the 1:55 at BW CW13. With Street tires 1:58 IMHO. With over 200 WHP ITB/Piston n/a you get the idea. S2000 with 140 UTQG tires did a 1:56. The Rotary is a world class motor and no matter what you do to the Miata BP motor it is only a 4 cyl.
Our Goal is to beat the n/a Modified RTA & SLB Record in Mod. @ BW CW 13. It may take a few years but we will try like heck and it will be with a 13B Miata or even a FC IMO a FC or FD has potential to do 1:49 on NT01's? Rotary in a Miata I have no idea but I do not think that it would even touch a FC-FD times. The Head-cams-AEM is for sale along wit the ITB's. I want to find a good home for someone possibly a SCCA Natl. DP competitor. I will start getting the word out on the Scca forums. |
Just came across this FB w/ Webers and the 3 Rotor FC. This is why we want to do a Rotary in a Miata and ITB's. Wow!!!

I'm sure you do your own fab work, but I happen to have a top hat and intake manifold for a 13B ITB setup :) if you're interested...
|
I was sad to hear Redline wont be coming back to NSS this year for IA :(
|
I don't get it. If Lucky7 Racing has a damn rotary miata, why don't they make a friggin kit???????
Go to any Miata forum and do a search for 'Rotary swap' As long as you don't make it $3K (like Mazsport did) you would sell tons of them. Customer #1 right here. |
Our goal is to make it as easy as possible to bolt in a Rotary Engine at a reasonable price. Ricardo will be making the engine mount bracket and he also does custom work for Kilo Racing and he wants to make it good quality.
|
Yes, finally someone making Miata rotary Kits at a reasonable price. Are you focusing specifics(drop in and turn key) or just a base essentials (subframe, drive shaft, wiring, etc).
Very interested in a Base essentials style kit. |

Tommorrow I will be pulling the motor out of the FC and I will have Ricardo over (Kilo Racing Machinist) and Raul, and we will test fit the spare engine into the Miata to see the best way for mounts.
|
Got a pretty good idea now. We will be making a custon bracket so that you can bolt the engine in. Looks like no welding and will be bolted in. Subframe may have to be notched slightly but no firewall cutting.
Price range $500-$700 |
On Saturday we took the Miata tranny out, took all of 15 minutes. Gotta love RWD. This way we can test fit and make the custom bracket with the engine/tranny. We need to have the car ready for the Superlap Battle in November.
|
just curious, how you ever used megasquirt? Might just be in my tuning in general, but im having trouble figuring out what the car wants with these ITBs.

Good news I just got. The REDLINE TIME ATTACK has a meeting with Sebring Raceway and if they can secure a event there we need to have the car ready. |
We will be including a New Oil Pan in our swap kit.
|
Pulled the FC Motor apart and we will be able to use the 9.7:1 Rotors and we will be using the 4 port 12A or 4 port 13B side & center plates.. It's been done before and we have the machining capability. Looks like we will be using the Kaaz LSD, since that is the best one for the Miata in our opinion.

^^damn that is nice!
|
Look like Tweakit's to me.
|
Thanks! That's what we are looking at now since we want to use twin fuel rails with 4 injectors.
|
those are from tweakit..in AUS....very affordable too
I just comleted my miata turbo rotary swap...went weber blowthorugh...did some initial dyno runs on 5 psi and made 250 whp....not too bad for a To4e on low boost.. just waiting for spring to get here so i run her out a bit.... will post some pics when i get some |
ziig get those pics on here, I like to see your build.
We will be coming out with Semi-PP Intake manifolds. REDLINE TIME ATTACK Sebring Florida August 14th-15th we hope to be ready by then. |
Our KAAZ LSD in on it's way.:driving:
We will be using our own FujiRacing 50mm ITB's and Fuel Rail. |
Not to threadjack, but it seems like the FD would be a great fit in the street tire class.
A GTUs would be a nice fit in the Enthusiast class as it seems to only restrict forced induction upgrades. You can make the argument that porting is like a camshaft, so you'd run the largest port that still lets you pass emissions. (Or you just run your car on E85 and drive a bridgeport / p-port to totally annihilate the competition, that should still pass emissions, right?) I just realized, Corvette's will probably own in the Enthusiast class. |
Ever thought about getting these for the Miata build?
http://www.racingbeat.com/resultset....rtNumber=11061 Which block are you guys using? There have been good results using the RE block in NA form with either 9.7:1 S5 NA rotors or some special 10.2:1 Rotors that KDRotary had used in an NA 20B build. Methinks they were just 10:1 rotors though. |
Our FujiRacing 50mm ITB Throttle Bodies just came in from Japan. It has 2 Injector ports per Throttle. I will post pics the next couple of days.
|
Patiently waiting for pics... I potentially have a rotary powered endurance mx5 project in my future :)
|
look at the thread for rotary of the month my miata is on there. I ran 9.7 :1 rotors with the turbo, damaged a rear stationary bearing so i swapped out bearing and decided to drop compression a bit now makeing 310 @ 5 psi
|
As an owner of a Miata with a blown engine and and ugly FD with a good engine, this is intriguing to me.. cant wait for more info on this kit.
|
Moving along just fine. Car will be ready sometime this year I can promise you that.

Pulled my Mazda Torsen Diff. and the alum. housing was cracked. What's amazing is we were able to set the fastest time (over 85 Miata's) @ Hallet Raceway 1.8 mile circuit on 100 treadwear tires 1:28.2 with our 184 whp N/A ITB Piston motor beating the old time of a Supercharged 260 whp time of 1:28.3. Driver only had 1 session and put down the time with the cracked housing which does affect acceleration and possibly handling. I have a pretty good idea what the piston motor can do and can only imagine what the 13B will do.
Note: Last week testing the 1st gen RX712A Semi-PP in the 1/8th and the R&P Gear broke. We will try again this week. Semi-PP is not new to us. |
