B3R 2010 - Oct 23-24th - NC

it's that time again... website updated!

www.BlueRidgeRotaryRun.com

Cliff Notes:
- When: Oct 23th - Oct 24th, 2010
- What: Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Cherokee
- Where: Friday night: Asheville, Saturday night: Smokemont campground/Cherokee.
- Registration: $30 if you want T-shirt, food Saturday night, slot in Group campsite. (check website for details)

Again, I'll be doing my annual run on the Blue Ridge Parkway, from Asheville, NC to Cherokee, NC (approx 90 miles).

The idea is to start off Saturday morning, catch a bite to eat in Asheville and then start the cruise about 9 - 10 am. Stop along the way for pictures and stretch our legs.

I'm planning to camp out in the Smokemont Campground in the Smokey Mountain National Park on Saturday night. We have space for 40 people in the two reserved group camp sites we have. These spots will go to the first 40 people who claim them. I will base it off "confirmed" attendees..

If you wish to get your own camp site, they are $20/night. Be sure to reserve it for Oct 23rd. If you want a hotel, that will be up to you to find one in Cherokee.

Lodging Friday night in Asheville will be up to you. I can provide a place to sleep for a few people, LET ME KNOW!!! these will be First come-first serve. And I'm not completely sure how many I can support. And I can't promise a bed or couch, just a free roof over your head for Friday night at either my house.

Breakfast - ~8am Sat morning:

Cracker Barrel in Asheville
34 Tunnel Rd
Asheville, NC 28805-1230

I am going to ask that we do not try to get one large group of all of us. My reasoning for this it in the interest of time, not only in getting tables, but also for getting food. So pick a handful of people you wish to sit with and get a table. Also it will help if people are showing up at different times.

After breakfast, we will do the last gathering in the Ingle's parking lot across from the entrance of Cracker Barrel. There is gas right there so people can top off before we head out.

Road Closure (as of May 2010)
if the road opens over the summer, I will update this route... (this is the same route we did last year for those who remember)

Due to closures on the parkway, we will make a slight detour. We will get on the parkway at "Town Mountain Road" in Asheville. We will get off the parkway at Brevard Road (NC 191) and make our way to Pisgah Highway (NC 151) to get back on the parkway. More details below:

as listed per http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

Quote:

Due to heavy rains, engineers determined that a high risk of slides existed in the area, necessitating this emergency closure. The closure will be in place until further notice. Pisgah Inn remains open and accessible from US Highway 276 at Wagon Road Gap.

bad part is that this past winter did some work on the trees up there, i did a drive the other week and SEVERAL dead trees... =/

lt1_fd3s 05-25-2010 09:14 PM

Holly has reserved two of the group campsites, giving us room for 40 people (but only 10 cars...) There is additional parking not too far from the sites.

I also do plan to get T-shirts for this year, though they will not be free... I will post up more info about those as the times come and also create a list of those who have paid...

ROTORX7Holly 05-25-2010 09:59 PM

Starting a list for the 10 parking spaces at the 2 group campsites that I reserved:
1. Tray
2. Holly
3. Kristy
4. Jeremy
5. Tim
6. ZGN :)

Such a long drive :)

ROTORX7Holly 05-28-2010 01:03 PM

I hope you are able to make it this year Ricco
Kevin, you have to plan better this year. Just get you and Amber in the car Friday evening and drive over to ATL and sleep at my house on Friday night. Then we can get up,not so early and meet everyone after that at around 11:00AM. That way we don't have to get up too early and we don't miss hardly any of the Parkway drive. It worked for Jeremy and I last year.

Herblenny 06-10-2010 10:41 AM

I'm going to try....

Hopefully you won't have to help me with my car this time Ricco :)

New Carter fuel pump and new ignition. I actually think it was ignition related
more than anything. The fuel pump was probably just a false negative or
it was weak as well. Anyway, it runs strong now.
