Alternator alternatives?
Are there other alternators that may be used other than a Mazda Factory. I remember reading something some years ago that you can use a GM alternator.
I am looking to get one within a day or so, so if I can pick up a GM one Napa or the likes may have one in stock Thanks Jeremy |

I have been using a modified GM alt that puts out 190 amps .After several years it is still putting out . The builder is wwwiraggialternator.com He can make the stock alt put out 150 amps as well .

The GM/Delco alternators come with several different moutning points. A Delco CS-144 alternator from a late 90's model Camaro will fit on an FD with modification to the adjustor bracket. These can be built to put out up to 200 A.
Sport Tuner, see the vendor section here, can rebuild the stock alternator to put out 140 A or so. Jack |

Jeremy - your best bet for short turn around would be to contact Anthony at SportTunner.com and see if he has an FD alternator in stock that he could build and send out then you could return a core.
Jack For reference - attached are pics of the GM alternator I'm using. The important thing is the mounting tabs 180 degrees from each other. It came from a part out car - originally from a company called Star Tech that charges some outrageous price around $450-500. |
thanks guys i found a replacement for now, but i will check into the 140 A unit and send my old one in as a core.

I'm not sure which one of those model numbers works. As I stated, this alternator came from an FD that I bought to part out. The original owner got it from a company called Startech. There were no identifying numbers on it.
It mounts using the original pivot bolt with a nut on the back side. The stock adjuster bracket is close so I modified it to work (see pics). It has a 4-wire plug plus the battery ring connector. I took the altenator apart to send the case off for cermaic coating then when it was reassembled an insulator got crushed so I burned up the voltage regulator the first time I ran the engine. I just got it back from a rebuild and had it converted to single wire (ring terminal from the battery only). In this configuration, the charge light on the dash won't work but when using the 4-wire plug the charge light worked but I didn't record how to wire it. I've attached some pdf's for the cs-144 that may be helpful. Jack |

Here's one document, need to zip the other.
The 0390 pic shows the modified bracket with other parts sent for powdercoating. The 0341 pic shows it mounted with an unmodified alternator adjustment bracket. In regards to the pulley, it came with the alternator. Not sure if the FD alternator pulley would fit on it. |
FEED has an upgraded unit but its pricey if i remember right around $500

I've got the 140A unit from Ihor @ IRP which has an affiliation with SportTuner. I like it, the only complaint I have is that you have to rev past 3k to get it to kick on. After that, she'll put out good voltages all the way down to a super low idle.

on the club someone used a diesel alternator with minimal modiication

I would not want that on my engine as it is grossly ugly!
