Heat sheilding??
 
First off I'm sorry for the rough description, pretty sure I have seen this on a couple of cars and have been trying to find out what the stuff is, it's like an aluminium blanket with fibreglass in the middle insulation material. Looks like it's reasonably rigid though.

Basically what I want to do is get ahold of this stuff, so I can build sort of a box around my turbo, exhaust manifold and dump pipe out of it so it blocks all the heat for escaping into my engine bay. My theory is lower engine bay temps = lower intake temps = better everything. Would also give the cops less to look at when I end up getting pulled over for an RBT which 99% of the time ends up with, can we have a look under your bonnet over here.

Does anyone know what this stuff is called and is this a good/bad idea

The stuff you are looking at is pretty ghetto IMHO, used only by back yard builders & FORD lol :rofl: It's made by ACL, and it is pretty ghetto. YOu can buy it at all the abo spare parts shops.

A classy proper solution is simply to go to a metal shop and buy some SS304L sheet, you can ****, shape, form it into anything you require and then weld it if needed. It looks a million bucks and also will last perfectly on a turbo rotary application. I use SS sheet on my car and also made a SS sheet heat shield for the dump pipe as well, SS is an excellent natural insulator and when polished is a great reflector as well, that other Alloy sandwich crap is just that, crap :)

Its only a personal view of mine and I can tell you mine performs perfectly, its however costly for an OEM that is why you wont see it especially on mass made falcoons and the like, all of the decent cars like Ferrari and so on will use formed SS sheet for heat shielding purposes.

For stealth look that alloy sandwich crap may be better as I have seen it painted black here, its very popular in southern states where people are 2 buck cunts and use cheap shit in their builds............. I saw a Ford SUV with bigger turbo install and had a horse cock manifold to much larger turbo and it was all "kind of" hidden under that crap painted black, your typical stupid police man would obviously pick it but feel pitty seeing its so ghetto would probably let you off in sympathy :rofl:

Pfft sif i would buy stainless. I would just use 301 as I can get it for free, or even titanium. I just thought the other crap would insulate it a hell of alot better.

heat shielding on most factory cars is a stamped steel casing with an asbestos/packing core. asbestos is still one of the best materials for this purpose so dont eat it. or grind it down. to make your own similar material, weave together off the shelf heat wrap tape into sheets and wet down before sandwiching between sheets of metal then you can rivet it into place to hold it permanently

I agree SS shielding is the best ideally. There are alot of products that would reduce radiant heat though such as DEI header wrap. But that would only do any good on the manifold piping itself. If your idea is to enclose and divde the turbo system from the rest of the engine - custom shielding will be your best route.

Also, there are places like turblown that make lower intake heat shields/blankets for 2nd and 3rd gens. Never used one of their shields personally, but they make quality stuff.

Yeah, I was going to make it out of stainless, but one of the guys at work say you can get a sheet of stuff from repco for about $150 that you can put an oxy on one side and your hand on the other, so I'm going to look into that. If not I guess it will be stainless.
