Soon To Be A New Owner
Hey guys I'm going to be picking up a 88 gxl in two weeks.
According to the owner it needs a mass air flow sensor that preventing it from running, apparently the guys brother dropped it for some reason. I have a couple friends that are big rx7 guys and the have a good sensor that I'm going to take with me. The car has been sitting for a while so Im going to drain the gas tank and put fresh gas in it to see if I can get it to run. It its clean on the inside and the paint is good but its dirty from sitting there. It is 100% stock with 124xxx miles. The best part is I got the guy down to 700$ So I guess the question is: is there anything else I should look for? Thanks |
How long has it been sitting?
I would bring a set of plugs as well, just in case. Everytime I have found a bucket, the plugs were horrible, and swapping them out usually solved alot of small issues! |
Don't count on it being the AFM, I have a hunch that it is more than that.
Although the '86 that I currently have (after I had to part with the '87) was "Blown" and all that was wrong was a vacuum line (as I could tell from the fact that it would start and then immediately quit). I paid $400 for it, put the vacuum line back on the brake booster and drove it away. Sometimes it does work out that way. |
Welcome to the Club and our madness that is all things Rotary. Good luck with the car.

"Bad AFM" is a good excuse to cover other problems.
I would offer $200 an walk away if they don't take it. You can get a running car for that kinda money. $700 is a lot for someone elses headache. -Ted |
Well I picked it up last weekend.
The car was dirty on the outside but the body was good. when I got home i went to check the gas and the previous owner left the gas cap off for the 7 YEARS it was sitting. So the gas tank was rusted to hell. I will be picking one up this weekend for 50 so so far I have spent 550 on the car because I got him down to 500. I really like this car because its in good condition after a wash and interior clean bbut worst come to worst I will get my money back by at least parting it out. so far compression is testing ok and the engine turns over (I unplugged the fuel pump so none of the gunk goes in the engine. Lets see how much work this car is goin to take... |
Good compression is a major plus!
You may have been one of the lucky few who gets a car from someone who is not a very good mechanic and it turns out to be a simple fix. The best of luck to you! |
