Oil-cooled only turbos?

No go on a rotary?

Funny you are posting this now, as I had the same question.

Since I am boosting the 12a, and I have to find a source/return for coolant I did some research on it.

The JDM 12aT had a very similar turbo as the S4/S5 FC's, a Hitcachi HT-18. They did not have coolant provisions, oil only.

So, after asking around to a few guys with 12a turbo set-ups, most do not run coolant on theirs.

I am taking a gamble, and am going to rum it oil only.

PS- Nate, I need that S4 manifold!!

Haha I know you do. Are you planning on trying to run the twin scroll or not?

djmtsu 06-30-2011 12:56 PM

No twin scroll for me!

I am still collecting parts, so no biggie. If I NEED it, I will PM you some $$$ for shipping.

I've been running a Turbonetics T-66 non BB turbo on my FD since '07. Its not water cooled. Just be mindful of the turbo and you'll be ok...drive easy the last few minutes of your drive, let the car idle for a minute or so, and change your oil frequently. If you beat on it, give it 3-5 minutes of idle before shutting off. You'll be fine.

Good to know. I have been looking at a few oil cooled only to4e turbos and wasnt sure of how big the downside was.

Here is the specs on the turbo...Thoughts?

Compressor: 76mm wheel w/ 50 A/R housing
Center section: Garrett oil cooled only
Turbine: 1.15 A/R divided to4e

djmtsu 06-30-2011 02:55 PM

Pretty big turbine A/R, but you have a healthy street port right?

Water-cooled centers were for paranoid jackasses who were scared of oil coking due to shutting off the engine after a hard run.
NONE of us do that, right? :)
It's the same for turbo timers - remember those? :D

If you're mindful of "cooling down" the turbo, then there is no need for the added complexities of a water-cooled center.

Meh its a racing beat template mild street port. Charles knows the specifics since he did it lol.

Im looking at getting the EFR-9180 from BW. Ive noticed it says "water cooling optional but reccomended" so there is no real gain aside from when you shut it down? Because when i installed my current turbo I blanked off the water outlets on the engine for the turbo lol

no water needed for turbos to last, save the water for the fish :)

What is anyones thoughts as far as the listed turbos size considering its going on a mild streetport 13BT.

very laggy with that massive turbing housing

85rx-7gsl-se 06-30-2011 09:08 PM

That was my fear. I should have picked up a NOS Holset H1e with the 19CM housing for $375 when I had the chance lol
