Turbo + ITBs

Hsa anyone around here ever ran a turbo setup with ITB's? Was sitting around last night and was wondering about the possibilities, and benefits of such a set up.

The ITB's can give you a little better response.
The downside is that they typically cause more turbulence and more restriction versus one honkin' TB.

The Skyline GT-R RB26 guys do this when they convert their stock ITB's.
Aftermarket single TB set-up's offer more power potential due to smoother flow.

The Turbo BMW M3's seem to run very well with ITB's. I will say I have seen some interesting boosted ITB set ups, but never pesonally ran one myself.

the 12A pictured made 730 rwhp at 30 psi many years ago

Aggreed! I would think if you could make a progressive enough split on the intake manifold the turbulance wouldn't be that bad. I'm just planning a RE motor build in the future and trying to work out ideas in my head.

They also use ITB's with slide plates, not butterflies like nearly all aftermarket ITB's.

I am guessing that makes a difference.

I wasn't aware that all models of the M3 had slide plate throttle bodies? I'll have to go check it out, a friend has turbo E30 & E46 M3's

Not 100% sure that ALL of them do, but the older M5's had them. They are sexy.

i somewhat miss my ITB setup. It was a wonderful noise.

aftermarket sheet metal intake to fit an FD 13B
short runners since the motor was a big bridgeport, lots of top end hp with this one. it did loose torque tho....

Nissan GTiR is one factory application of forced induction and ITBs. Like Ted pointed out, the big downside is the higher ratio of throttle plates and shafts in the air stream to disrupt flow. The upside is, like any ITB setup, throttle response.

You'll need an ECU that can do TPS and MAP blend tuning. The vacuum signal behind the throttle plates usually isn't much use as a load reference with ITBs. So you end up using Alpha-N (TPS) based load sensing and use a MAP correction map to compensate for positive manifold pressures. It's not hard to setup and tune, just different.

Whos the first to do Individual throttle bodies and individual turbos? :P
