Hand crank engine with automatic trans
This is not something I usually mess with, but I was inspecting a non-turbo FC with auto trans earlier today...
I managed to slip on a 19mm socket over the pulley bolt, shifted the auto trans into Neutral, and then tried to crank the engine over by hand. I could not get that much leverage on the ratchet handle due to all the stock fan + shroud + PS in the way, but I would think the engine would've turned over easily? If this were a manual trans shifted into neutral, the engine should easily turned a little. Is the auto trans torque converter somehow resisting me turning the engine over like this? There is a chance the engine might be dead - pulled front T spark plug and there was "wet mud" on the tip of the spark plug... -Ted |
I think you're right. Only reason I know of that would cause an AT to keep your crank from turning would be if it was somehow jammed in park, despite the shifter being in neutral, perhaps a busted linkage?

you should have been abled to turn the motor reguardless of it being in park or nuetral, unless the starter is stuck engaged
