fuel injection conversion
 
has any one here of a fuel injection conversion for an 83 12a motor. Here is what got me to thinking....... i tried to see if there were any cold air systems for the caburated motor and all i can come up with is the muscle car style air cleaners. i have seen where people with mad skill have made their own air box with some welding and fabrication but not really what im looking for. any ideas?????

There are plenty of aftermarket Weber and Holley-styled intake manifolds for the 12A. You could always pick up one of those and get one of the many throttle body setups out there that are made in Weber and Holley carb styles. That's the easy part. The hard part is redoing the fuel system for a high pressure setup and control system for the injectors. You'd still have to make some kind of cold air box though.

pro-jay makes some clean looking TBI's but at the end of the day it is:

a: unecessarily large for a stock 12a

and

b: still throttle body injection

yeah figured thats what i would get i guess it would be better to go with a 13B and go from there

I think there are some 45 mm DCOE-style throttle bodies out there, which would be fine for a stock 12A. There wouldn't be much benefit over an actual DCOE carb setup though other than better fuel atomization and control. For the overall cost you'd be better off finding a fuel injected 13B and swapping that.

INFRONOS I am gonna have to agree a 13b is gonna be my best bet and not only that every thing is alot cheaper

assuming you can find a reasonably priced complete swap. some external engine work is needed but it isn't all that bad. wiring everything up is going to be the most difficult part of the project.

yeah i hear that there are painless wiring harnesses out there so i will certainly do my research in depth before jumping into anything

If you go with the fuel injected 13B the easiest way is to run an aftermarket ECU, HalTech, etc. Wiring it all up would be much easier than trying to use the stock ECU. They can be pricey, but if you plan on playing with the engine very much you're going to need one eventually.

I have a student here who is building up a motor as part of his training and he is running it with Weber style IDA induction (due to restrictive gay laws for young people when they first get their licence!).

He has done it expe3nsive though with a Motec M600 and 13B-REW street port, the application is the same though to your 12A.

A simple conversion can be done using all late model 13B-REW or Cosmo intake system and fuel lines, injectors etc with a simple adaptor plate to the motor. Seen this set up (will host video on my site) of a 160+mph 8 second RX3, when I was consulting for them and supply exploding ceramic apex seals LOL.

There are many ways you can do it.

Probably the adaptor plate is best.

Seen this in a speedway car running NA 13B-REW intake, and cheap Haltech ECU, all you need is a lift pump, surge tank and high pressure pump, adapotor and 13B Turbo intake system and away you go. The Speedway engine 13B made 280bhp 'bridge ported' on the engine dyno so those intakes are not restrictive at all.

Even better :)

Only stay 12A if you have a point to prove etc. Otherwise 13B all the way and later model EFI turbo set up :)

9.0:1 comp runs great NA ;)

I stayed as close to stock Mazda FC engineering as I could. Nothing fancy, some of these others projects put me to shame. Which is why I suggested going with the stand alone right away. I'm what Rice likes to term one of those broke ass c***s. So I had to do it the hard way. :lol:
