Cosmos windshield?

Anyone know of one I could buy?

djmtsu 02-22-2016 12:15 PM

They don't exist.

Also, be specific, which generation/year model Cosmo?

chibikougan 02-22-2016 04:43 PM

Well you two can put in for a Custom order of 3 anyway...Might try and find a few others and see how many you need to order to get it affordable.

chinist 02-23-2016 09:21 AM

not a bad idea

So who is it that does custom orders? ....any contact info? Have you had any experience with pricing?

djmtsu 02-23-2016 09:34 AM

Once again I'll ask you, what year Cosmo?

A friend of mine is the plant manager for an automotive glass manufacturer. I asked about replacement windshields for my generation Cosmo. He would need a perfect windshield to make a mold from, then would need at least 20 pre-ordered. If that minimum were reached, they would still cost around $600 each, and that is without internal antenna. Add $100 each for that, and another $100 if you want it tinted across the top.

Good to know.....the kicker being finding that perfect "does not exist" windshield to copy. I think the last reference I heard to a market available replacement was from PPG(?), and that's been a few years ago. Wonder if their mold is still rattling around in the shed out back.
My Cosmo is a 76. Been setting for 25yrs. and a few yrs. ago some marauding neighborhood children put a brick through the windshield. Kind of put hold on my most anticipated retirement projects.

djmtsu 02-24-2016 10:22 AM

Both of my 1976 Cosmo's have 'perfect' glass, otherwise I would not have bought them.

You should have bid on one of the many salvage Cosmo's Dave Meditz just auctioned off. Could have had a whole car with good glass, but otherwise crusty, for around $50.

chinist 02-25-2016 11:13 AM

So they do exist. Do you know of one I can buy, rather than could have bought?

djmtsu 02-25-2016 11:35 AM

As far as I know, they do not exist. You could always call around to a few glass installers and see if they can get their manufacturer to check stock, but these cars are 40 years old, and never sold in great numbers. The only thing that might work is an RX-4 coupe windshield (again, pretty rare), or POTENTIALLY a first gen 626 Coupe, late 70's early 80's when they were still rear wheel drive.

I take it then the interchange information for models and years is hard to come by, or just hasn't been researched as yet?

Shoot... Can your buddy make FD windshields DJ?

(Just asking for future reference.. I'll need/want to replace mine within the next year or two)

I'll shoot him a text, and see if they do. I need to know where you are living so he can see where the local installer they ship to is.

Alexandria, Va is going to be my best bet for where I would be living in a year or so (stressing that I am NOT ready to purchase/install now... I gotta get the car running again first!)

Nah, I'll just send him a message asking if they are still being produced, or if he has them in the warehouse network. I would assume they do, but I'll get you more info, including the 'friends and family' price :)

Badass, thanks!

When I had the car painted in 2010 I think the shop fucked up reinstalling the front glass. About 5 months later I noticed a crack had started running along the bottom of the windshield :( It wasn't enough to impede my vision and cause a ticket or failed inspection, but still.. It's also a good excuse to put fresh glass in that doesn't glisten in the sun like one of those Twilight faggots from decades of wear
