Thermo Pellet in FMOC
While working on repairing the cracked FMOC on my SE, I saw some instructions from the guys at ISC racing that said when installed an FC FMOC onto the FB, you should remove the drain nut and then pull out the spring and pellet and replace with just a 6mm bolt to block this off.
Now, I'm not sure about the older SA FMOC, but the original cooler for my SE has this pellet - why would you want to remove it if it had it from the factory? |
I was under the assumption that is some sort of 'thermostat' so the oil stays at a somewhat consistent temperature. Maybe it doesn't get the same amount of airflow on an FB, therefore it benefits from having the pellet removed.
Thats my theory FWIW. |
^ Good theory.
I would image on an FB - especially the SE's it would get the same if not more air than an FC. Especially considering where I'm going to mount it... I guess its not really a big deal either way, I just wasn't sure why ISC thought you should remove it... |
Maybe they just don't like it?
It's there to help the engine warm up faster, oil goes through the cooler after the oil reaches temperature. |
^ Ah - even better theory. That ones I can understand - and it makes the decision to leave it in easier since this car is a DD and not a track only. thanks!

For street driving you want it. Usually only track cars have it taken out. It bypasses the cooler until the oil is warm enough to open the valve. Track guys have plenty of time to wait and it benefits them somehow temperature wise. I forgot all the details, but Rogue Wulff knows the specifics.

The "Thermal Pellet" is actually a temprature actuated bypass. It closes once the oil reaches ~150-160F, depending on year model.
The reason ISC says to remove it, is that is intended for a track car. Track cars, you want a full flow thru the oil cooler. This helps to prevent overheating. On the street, you want the oil temp to remain warm enough to flow freely, bu not too hot. I have an FC FMOC on my '83 12A, as does misthael on his 84 12A. Both still have the temp bypass in place. |
