Paint stripper doesnt work...
Ok, so because I'm swapping in another engine, I decided to strip down my nasty grimy engine bay, clean it, and repaint it in 500 degree Hi Temp white.
I was fine on the stripping off all the parts, and got most if not all of the grime out. however, when I went to strip the paint, the paint stripper just isnt working! I did it per instructions, spray on, and let sit for 15~30 min. Well, this is how it turned out after some scraping, and then another coat a day later and a power wash. (note: I did not wash the old stipper away after the first time, and just sprayed over it the second... would this affect anything? Here's some pics: http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...C/IMG_0082.jpg Also, I cleaned up the shortblock I am putting in, and I must say, it looks mighty clean! http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s.../IMG_00882.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s.../IMG_00912.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s.../IMG_00922.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...C/IMG_0089.jpg |
Are you using some kinda EPA/CARB/water soluable paint stripper?
Go for the nasty "aircraft" stuff that'll take you skin off! -Ted |
That's what I used! I bought clean Strip Aircraft remover aerosol can, and sprayed the hell out of it, and all I got was this.
I will try again tomorrow... but this really pisses me off, I thought I would start painting shit by now! :D |
No aerosol cans.
They are diluted. Use the TAL Strip in the metal jug (aircraft stripper, you can buy it at Advance Auto Parts). Wear a glove and mask, and watch the paint disappear. |
Word, the aersol stuff wouldn't take bug grime off a windshield.
Buy the jug, apply with a brush. It'll bubble that shit off like nothing. :) |
ok. will do. I'm gonna try to return that pos crap and say it's defective or something.

Just like "carb cleaner"... The carb cleaner in the spray can is totally different than the carb cleaner in the gallon can! -Ted |
Hmm, really? I use aerosol carb cleaner just fine for what I need it for... I bought a gallon jug of it once, it wasnt really effective on this puch moped carb i was trying to rebuild.
also, carb cleaner does wonders for cleaning off the really nasty grime you somtimes cant get off with just orange hand cleaner. |
Also, a good tip when trying to strip a panel:
Take some rough paper (40grit) or an old piece of grinding disc (~26 grit) and scuff the whole surface up qiuckly. You don't want to sand it all, just cut through to the metal is a few areas to allow the stripper to more easily "bite" under the paint. It will also make it easier to scrape off afterwars since you can start from a scratch where the stripper has cleaned it to metal.... |
Thanks for the tip! I just got back from summer classes and was right about to go and work on the car!
I gotta finish this bizatch already! :D |
