opinions about magnetic oil drain plugs

Just what the title says has anybody tried them? Worth it or not?

Ender 08-16-2008 09:10 AM

Yes. Honestly, they certainly couldn't hurt unless they come apart or fall out.

heard of them, never seen one in action.

I have one.

It does collect metal debris on it. When I did the first oil change on it when I had the car I got a big old blob of oil and metal that was then promptly wiped on a rag and thrown away. The plug has been cleaner ever since.

Where do you guys buy the plug? I've been thinking of getting one for a long time but dunno where to start looking...

Max777 08-17-2008 07:48 PM

umm, i could have sworn that you can get one at advanced auto...

I did hear that it's not 100% effective because it cant attract aluminum bits, but I think that it's WAY better than having no protection at all!

(like, primer looks ugly and still absorbs water, but it's more protection then just leaving the metal bare... ya dig?)

Any parts store really. I know summit sells a magnet that hooks up on the oil filter (something else to consider).

Just the plug is enough, methinks- no need for another magnet. Most filters do a good job filtering stuff anyway.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

The plug works.

Get one for your tranny also.
