Side-exit exhaust
 

My turbo project has been delayed until next year, unfortunately, but in the mean time my exhaust system was needed for another car, so Jeff20B welded me up a new one. We decided to have it exit out the side so as to avoid having to go up and over the axle (we were lazy and short on pipe :)). We used two old Rotary Engineering glasspacks after the stock manifold, with some Monza/Ansa/Pacesetter tips. Turned out pretty well.

i must say...what you did with the exhaust is interesting...

looks and sounds pretty good, but Im gonna laugh when you set your tire on fire!

:lol: I was thinking the same about the tires. I haven't heard it though...maybe later.

To tell the truth, I was concerned about having the exhaust that close to the tire, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. Eh, it's temporary, might as well try something different.

you don't have to go up and over the rear axle...you can go under the rear end with no problem...I have done many exhaust systems this way with no problems all the way up to 4inch's

But your set up Sounds pretty sick and looks cute too...

90 degree bends are bad for airflow.

That's awesome! I will be doing this on a bud's car tomorrow. I'm helping him install a bridge-port in his GSL-SE that he rally-x's. I had planned to to run twin resonators out with twin tips....full 2" x .120" wall tubing....all rotary draw bent to shape.

its only one so the air flow is not restricted that bad if at all...Now if he would have thrown left and right 90's and up and downs and loop d loops then yeah the exhaust would have been garbage...

But the setup he has is just fine

If we'd gone over the axle it would have used up a full u-bend. :)

I won't likely do it this way again, but it is kinda cool. I'm just surprised how tolerably quiet it ended up being. It does drone a little bit at certain RPMs, but not in the freeway cruising range, thankfully. Not bad for a pair of old glasspacks.

BigTeddy: We probably could have done that, but again, it would have taken more pipe. Question, though: is it okay to do that at stock ride height with stock soft springs? If it makes more sense, I could do my 3" turbo exhaust system under the axle.

What you save in less bends, you loose in other ways. Especially with 3". Scrapy isn't just a disease. Steve went up over his rearend and makes 300 HP even with an RB muffler.

Player im telling you...I did the setup and im getting ready to do the setup again for my all motor setup with a 3inch exhaust from front to back and under the axle with...My car is track setup and lowered but i have never ran into a problem...

When i used to run my car on the street it never scraped or hit anything...I will post pics here soon so you could see

sounds nice, how did you get such response from your engine? i'm assuming you have a lightweight flywheel, is that is?

Combination of large ports, a decent-flowing carb with no emissions junk, a healthy (though still stock) ignition system, and, naturally, a lightweight flywheel (it only weighs 8 lbs. :)). The response isn't quite as sharp now with the extra rotating mass of the supercharger, but it's still pretty good for a streetport.
