Speedo Problem
I'm just curious to see if anyone else has had this problem or if it's just the rearend I have in the car. I'm on my second speedo for my 90 NA and It's already pushing fluid into the back of the dash. Needless to say a few days ago it caused my gauges to die (i.e it blew the fuse in the car). I repaired it and also took the cluster apart to find out that almost the whole circuit board was covered in fluid cleaned it out and put it back together and it works again but I'm not sure for how long.

what kind of fluid is it?

I am confused as to what the diff would have to do with your speedo. On my 10AE, at least, the speedo was connected in at the rear of the trans.
My first thought would be - if you have trans fluid getting into the speedo cable and is being pushed into the cluster, then you have a venting problem in the trans. But I need more info. I have seen similar issues on E38 7series. The coolant temp sensor fails internally and allows coolant to be pumped into the DME (ecu). That's a fun conversation telling a customer that a coolant leak caused them to have to buy a $1500 DME. |
I've had this problem before. Just remove the cable from the gear on the transmission, remove the one 10mm bolt, and find another replacement. Your gear oil is passing through the seal on that gear assembly and traveling through the cable and eventually ending up in your dash. If you cant find a replacement gear PM me, I may have one.

Its Transmission Fluid. I replaced all the replaceable part (the speedo cable, O-ring, and gasket/seal) short of pull the trans apart. I don't think it's the trans because this has happen with two different transmissions (doesn't mean it can't happen though) . Also to answer the question about the rearend I have a custom built racing rearend with a 4:88 gearing ratio, so the car stays in the higher RPMs longer.

try this then, ther is a small tube above the Trans,I think Passenger side.it is for Venting.it looks like, well a Small tube, haha, with a little Cap.this cap is supposed to be Loose an allow venting of the transmission,,see if you can get at it and move, twist the Top little cap(don't pull it off!),If you Can't ,then the trans is building pressure and Putting Gear Oil(transmission Fluid) through to atmosphere, which in your case is the speedo cable.!

Thanks i'll give that a shot

wow i never knew that could happen.
