Some babble about the B2600 "R" transmission...

So as we all know, the Turbo transmissions are a very sough after item and of course, somewhat pricey now. Plus we have other people (namely Starion folks) looking to our transmission to solve their own problems. But i had an idea pop into my head while reading around google.

Why not look into the "R" transmissions from the B2600 or the 929? B2600 transmissions are pretty common. A turbo bellhousing will attach to it. The gearing MAY not be ideal.

89-93 B2600 "R" Transmission:
1st: 3.730
2nd: 2.158
3rd: 1.396
4th: 1.000
5th: 0.816

The 929 is the same gearing as an S4 turbo II transmission.

Another advantage i though of was that the shifter is 6" forward on the B2600 transmission when compared to the Turbo II transmission. MEANING that the 20b conversion could sit the 6" back to allow more space in the front for acc. and keep the weight more centered, BUT the shifter would line up around the stock location.

I am thinking about trying out a B2600 transmission in my hill climb car. And here is why if i am running a 185/65/R15 gravel michelin tire, then i get these results with a 4.3 final drive:

And changes into 5 gear at 6528 RPM dropping 1472 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 161.081 MPH
************************************************** ****************************************
Gearbox:-
Tyre:- Michelin all patterns 195/65 x 15
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 20.509 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 164.072 MPH at 8000 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1463 RPM 40 MPH = 1950 RPM 50 MPH = 2438 RPM 60 MPH = 2926 RPM
70 MPH = 3413 RPM 80 MPH = 3901 RPM 90 MPH = 4388 RPM 100 MPH = 4876 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 35.893 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 4628 RPM dropping 3372 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 62.040 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 5175 RPM dropping 2825 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 95.904 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 5731 RPM dropping 2269 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 133.883 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 6528 RPM dropping 1472 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 164.072 MPH

what about the 929? Do the shifter locations line up correctly for the 7? I'm looking into various options to beef up my drivetrain as my next endeavor after I put the turbo on. What I'd like to do is just swap the internals of the regular NA tranny and let people think it's just a normal old smoothie, but I'd like it to handle the power and torque I plan on producing (300+ at some point). Also what do the internals of the two different transmissions rate to? Are they able to handle more torque or less torque than a stock turbo II?

the transmission in the 929 is as best as i can tell the same transmission the Turbo II had right down to the gearing.

Now the B2600 has different gearing and a different shifter housing but other wise is of the same time so im sure its quite stout. Only difference is they are more common

sounds like I may go junk yard shopping.

you will still need either a Turbo II bellhousing or i believe an older "R" bell housing. I think the one Jeff20B is selling would work...maybe. Obviously then you also get top mounted starterness.

I think you're misunderstanding. Transplant of the internals.

i don't follow your hell bent venture on swapping the internals, but if your going to spend the money to experiment, then it is for sure a better way to go.

My car is just going to be different. I'd get more into detail about it but, well... the plans are about 5-7 years away from completion.

i would say that you could probably find one at a pull-a-part type yard for pretty cheap whereas finding a turbo II transmission to blow apart is a much more messy affair on both the wallet and on your time spent finding one for the sake of cutting up.

I recently saw a 929 in the yard too :(

I'm pretty sure it was auto though.

ya i havent exactly seen too many manual 929's although you can still get that brake mastercylinder from it too...

that's what I was thinking.... I don't think i've ever seen a manual 929 in person

They only made a manual 929 up to 1991. In Japan is was offered with a 13BT. Noobs.

Technically, the Luce was sold there and in a 13BT option. We got the "929" which was forever less cool since there was no rotary option.

Although, i wonder how hard that swap would be...
