brake caliper rebulid & paint
I am rebuilding my brake calipers. Anyone know a good paint to use? Dupilcolor has both 500 and 1200 degree paint. Any others?
|
I'v used the 1200 paint in red before but it chipped off after 2 years and its still chipping off...I'm thinking of powder coating mine.
|
I used the 1000 degrees on a downpipe and that stuff burned off at around like 300 degrees. I think it only works when it's at 1000 degrees
|
I had mine powercoated dark gray and the rotor top hats done in silver after I cross drilled them .The car is silver .

I used the Dupli-color caliper paint and it works just fine. Like always, prep is everything. I think anything over 500 F. would be overkill on a caliper.
GreatShamanGT, FWIW I used DEI's header paint/coatings on the downpipe. It blushed a little the first time with the heat, but looks fine, and adhesion has been great. IIRC, good to 1500 F. |
I used the kit that "Tire Rack" sells and so far so good. Can't remember the name brand but I believe it's a German company.

I used the caliper kit - it is ok; but powdercoating is the real way to go.

i have the front calipers pretty much ready to go. Took a wire wheel, wire brush and simple green to them. Repeated rinsing with brake cleaner.
I will probably just use the duplicolor 500 degree paint. I just want to be able to do this job once. I have all my parts in hopefully I can get the fronts rebuilt and on the car this weekend. I am also removing my dp, replacing the belts, plugs, installing my temp sending unit, o2 sensor, trans fluid, diff fluid, and fuel filter. Doubt this will all get done--I need my beer drinking time too. |

I just tried the brush on Duplicolor paint. My brother bought some years ago and we never used it. I thought I would give it a try-I didn't like the results so I took it off. I am going to call about powder coating, but I don't want to spend an ass load right now.

apparently model car paint works well.
|
^ lol, yeah check out my thread .... project forever... That will show you what we use and it is great. Never chipped off for us.
|
I used the duplicolor brush on paint... the fronts were new remans, and the paint went on fine, but the rears were old, and even through I scrubbed them, they did not turn out that great. I think if you use caliper paint, use the spray can for this job!
|
I went a head and sprayed them. I am required to take time of work so I am taking a trip to see some friends. I may get another set of calipers in the future and power coat them.

Brake Caliper
There are a number of aftermarket companies that rebuild the calipers that also provide them in numerous powdercoated colors. I did this for my rear ones, it was actually cheaper to buy them rebuilt and coated then it was to buy the necessary parts and rebuild them myself!
