Reinstalling turbo in the car - any tricks?
I tried the graphite exhaust gaskets but after less than 1000 miles the manifold to turbo one blew out...
http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/o...ownexhaust.jpg It was a bitch getting the turbo out. We ended up pulling the turbo to the fender and then pushing it forward, then taking the heat shield and manifold off, then we could get the turbo out. Is there an easier way to put it all back in? It's 105 out so easier is better! btw, called Mazdatrix yesterday and next day'd the OEM gaskets. Gotta love those guys. thanks, Jim |
Man... I have never even attempted a turbo replacement or even removal on a stock manifold with the engine in the car. Kudos to you.
I think that removing the manifold from the engine (which is what I think you did) is the least impossible solution. Seriously, unless you still have the entire rats nest and emissions system on your car, pulling the engine should be a 1.5 hour project tops. (Of course you said it was 105 degrees out which would make anything seem difficult). |
We got it done. Ended up taking off the ACV. That made it pretty easy. If we had remember to put the little heat shield on before the turbo it would have been cake. We had to wrestle it in there as I didnt want to release the crush on the manifold-turbo gasket.
So, the answer to my question is just pull the ACV! :001_005: |
yeah, it is alot easier with the avc and smog pump removed. i had the same problem with the graphite gasket and I replaced it with the layered OEM gasket. MUCH better.

Yep no turbo and acv makes it a walk in the park. Even with a BNR hybrid you just have to wrestle it past the upper radiator hose
