RHD question
 

im thinking of going rhd on my rx7. i live in wiscinsin i dont know if the laws are different anywhere else but would it be legal to drive my car still on the streets after the conversion?

Check out your local DMV. Or ask a cop about what are the laws on RHD cars. Or what it takes to legalize them. Just food for thought.

Why in the world would you purposefully do that much work to make a car harder to drive? Dash, steering, wiring harnesses ect. It is a lot of work, just ask anyone who's done the opposite.

have you ever tried going through a fast food joint or drive through atm in a RHD car. PITA.

Have you ever tried making a left turn at a really busy intersection with no protected arrow in a RHD car? PITA

Have you ever tried to pass on a single lane (each way) highway with a RHD car? Unless you have a bunch of power, and don't mind excessively speeding while doing the pass..... PITA.

agreed with modius.... but as long as you dont change your vin plate or anything and you convert your lhd to rhd with all the parts it should not be illegal just drive around look for some mail delivery carriers some actually buy rhd older jeeps to make it easier on them hell some just drive sitting in the right as far as legality you should have no problem. but as stated lol good luck driving it once ya convert it....

its a lot of work and a lot more money than if you were to just import a rhd from canada which seem to sell around 2-4 thousand dollars, guys here bring them in from japan and sell them legit.

Yes I have, and I did not find it hard at all. And even shifting with my left hand wasn't even an issue at all. Never missed and shifts because of it. I don't know why people freak out so much about right hand drive cars, they ARE NOT SO GOD DAMNED DIFFICULT TO DRIVE! It's just like any other car, only your point of view changes, big whoop, you aren't going to crash and die.

You can't sit there an tell me that doing the exact same left turn in a LHD and a RHD car on North American roads, that the RHD turn would not be more difficult. I've also done it, and can tell you that it is. Maybe not in every situation, but there are definitely a few where it is more dangerous.

I can understand if you import or buy a RHD car, for whatever reason (availability/price ect.), that the driving challenges are just part of the cost of ownership.

Why anyone would ever want to convert their perfectly functioning LHD car in North America to RHD, possibly spending thousands of dollars just to make life more difficult, is beyond me.

Some people like it. You don't really question why people spend thousands of dollars on other useless vanity mods for car shows and all that BS. It's preference.

And the only point I was trying to make is that it's not such a big deal, and if you do do it, eventually you'll get even more used to it and you wont have problems. Hell, go ask any mailman how hard it is to drive a RHD car everyday, he'll tell you the same thing. All you need is practice.

I think its funny, but to each their own. Is his car if he wants to sit in the hatch and drive it than so be it as long as it doesn't endanger me or my family. I am still going to laugh about it. How many people in Japan are converting their cars to LHD?

the real reason im doing it. is because i want to be unique. i dont want to be like any of the other fc driving around. its also something new and exciting. i dont care how hard it is to drive it. ill get used to it. and the cost isnt a big deal people do some crazy stuff to vehicles. its something i want to do. and all i wanted to know if i could legally drive it around not how hard it is.

im not discouraging you from doing but compare the cost of just buying a RHD thats imported they are really not much (as they are pretty hard to sell to most people) vs converting yours...

you need pedal assemblies, vacuum booster, steering rack, dashboards, wiring harnesses, consoles, AC and heater assemblies, Plus you have to fill all the old holes where those things went through the firewall and drill out new ones. ive seen a few conversions done and if they ever get finished (usually not) they end up just a mess or salvaged. I can buy a RHD 2nd gen right now for under $4000 (hell i can buy a RHD FD for under $10,000) so is that MORE expensive and more work than converting a LHD.

Of course I question that, why wouldn't I? I have a right to my own opinion.

No one in this thread is getting worked up about driving a RHD car except for you. Again, no one said it was hard.

I was merely pointing out the downfalls to doing this project. Personally, I know how daunting the conversion is (except going from RHD to LHD.)

Could you come up with 2 semi-plausible benefits to doing this project? (Other than being unique, which the OP already said, and opens a whole 'nother can of worms.) I can think of a couple, but I doubt any of them apply to the OP.

Maybe he works for the U.S. Mail system???

The swap itself isn't that difficult at all and it honestly doesn't cost that much either, despite what i've been reading in this thread. I own a rhd drive car and haven't had any issue with driving, or anything for that matter. I also have a friend that converted his car to rhd and it took him a week or less to complete the swap. All I have to say is I hope he does it and has fun with his car, because that's all that matters.
