Cranking issue?

Just put a new engine in my car. It's an s5 TII engine with the emissions removed. When it is cold and hasn't been started that day it will crank and die instantly for 4 or 5 tries. Once the 5 try I can get it to stay running but I have to hold it at about 2500 or 3000 rpms to get it to keep idle and it has a miss for about 1 minute and then will idle and run fine and very strong. What could cause this?

well if you removed all the emissions did you remove the thermowax controls on the throttle body?

batmanfc 11-14-2009 05:19 PM

Thermowax controls?

Whizbang 11-14-2009 05:23 PM

there is supposed to be a coolant line off the engine block to the throttle body, then it returns back to the water pump. This flowed coolant to a thing called the thermowax, which, while cold held the throttle open and as the coolant warmed, let off the throttle plates. if its removed (common for people to do when removing emissions not knowing what it fully is) your cold start blows.

Oh ok. Yea I don't believe it is there haha. Where would the line be exactly?

Whizbang 11-14-2009 09:09 PM

well the coolant line comes off the rear iron to the throttle body if it was there. There is a nipple extending straight up on top of the engine.

Whizbang 11-14-2009 09:10 PM

i would also double check for vacuum leaks.

batmanfc 11-14-2009 09:35 PM

Yea I checked all the vac leaks and they are ok. Is the nipple on the side of the rear iron or on the top?

Whizbang 11-14-2009 09:38 PM

on top. its rather large (since it flowed coolant).

its around there on most 13bs

Ok gotcha. I'm about postivie it isn't. I'll check it and fix it. That will help with cold start?

Whizbang 11-14-2009 10:01 PM

depends if you have the equipment connected to the throttle body or not. can you get a picture of your TB?

batmanfc 11-15-2009 10:11 PM

Yea I can try to get it tomorrow if I get off of work in time.

batmanfc 11-21-2009 07:01 PM

Sorry I have been out of town and still haven't had a chance to take a picture. I will get one as soon as possible.
