Not sure how far you've progressed with your upgrade, but here's an option that I think would satisfy your concerns. It puts a real surge tank in the fuel tank and puts the pressure pump(s) outside the tank. The advantage is that you can easily run whatever gauge wire you need to the pressure pump(s).
