Engine Temps through the Dragon
I was wondering how great it would have been if everyone at the Deal's Gap had checked their water, oil, and intake air temps, at their highest as they went through the Dragon.
It could tell us the relative efficiency of the different set-ups. It was a cool day but I expected higher temps. With a SMIC (PFS) and homemade cool air box mine were: -air 33ºC -water 86ºC -oil 96ºC ![]() Even after a 55ºC heat soak at the turn-around the air temps returned to 33ºC within a mile (without spraying). Would you share your temps and set-up? Thanks, Barry Last edited by Barry Bordes; 04-27-2010 at 03:07 PM. |

My AIT sensor wasn't working so I don't have that, but my water temps were in the mid 90s during hard runs. For whatever reason, my oil is always about 10 degrees celsius lower than my water temps, but they did hit round 92 degrees during runs on the Dragon. My car is a 3 rotor so that might change the equation also. I do run some massive oil coolers so I am sure that helps with the oil temps. Finally, the car cooled right down after a run - took no more than a few minutes to return to normal temps.

I only watched my water temps...No oil temp gauge.. Didn't look at AIT..
I have a Greddy M-Spec front mount and I was running at 84*c on normal runs and the highest I saw was on the Skyway run we did at above 5K feet my temps got to 92*c while doing a spirited drive.. L8R |

Mine never gets hot, no matter what I'm doing, so my data wouldn't be much help.

On the mostly uphill run, I was seeing a peak of 185~190F on my coolant, and 190~195F on my oil temps. Off climb/low load conditions it cooled down quickly to 170/170F water/oil temps. That's with a basically stock '89 FC turbo - still running the stock radiator, clutch fan & oil cooler. Coolant is 50/50 Prestone (standard green stuff), with no additives. Ambient temps make a huge difference with my FC - if ambients were over 90F, I would expect my water & oil temps to both peak around 210F on the uphill runs.

Granted I was using my governor (Chuck Westbrook), so I couldn't push very hard, but the intake temps stayed in the low 30's.
Earlier in the day with the water injection set lower at 6#s, the temps would go into the low 20's. Not pretty but functional. Barry ![]() |

86C for me with a v-mount... Can't remember intake temps but they were very low as well.

No air temp numbers as I didn't have my laptop in the car....
But peak water = 91C Peak oil = 93C Stock FC oil cooler, ducted. Rad is a koyo in stock mount location. I have dual E-fans (mercury mystique) and was running both durning the runs. One is temp. enagaged by the ECU, other I just switch on and runs steady. |
