Electrical Discharge Machining (commonly known as "EDM Machining") makes it possible to work with metals for which traditional machining techniques are ineffective. EDM machining equipment makes it is possible to cut small odd-shaped angles in hardened steel. The EDM machining process was developed by the aerospace and electronics industries to provide tolerances accurate to one ten thousandths of an inch. The accuracy of EDM makes it ideal for machining the 3mm opening to accommodate thicker apex seals. The resulting surface finish is ideal for use with any apex seal material and recommended for use carbon or ceramic apex seals.

Very cool. Thanks for posting that. I had my RX8 rotors EDM cut to accept the deeper RX7 apex seals (didn't make them any wider) but I didn't see it being done, so I was curious what the process looked like.

Good ol' EDM. How long does it usually take for the EDM to take off enough material? When I was doing the EDM lab we estimated that the quickest one (which didn't leave a great surface) took upwards of 1 min for not a whole lot of material removal, and it only went slower when it was set for a good surface finish.

To get the best surface finish takes about 30 min per slot...

Thanks

That's very time expensive, but it's not surprising for what it does.
