Tire Recommendations

I have an 88 GXL that is completely stock. Just wondering what tires some people recommend for Autox. I used to compete more frequently a year or two ago but have kind of dropped out. I am looking to get back into it now and I would like to be more competitive. I just used the tires that were on my car then and they were decent but after driving one of my friends cars who had some falkens on it I could tell the difference. Just wondering what some of those who may be a little more seasoned would recommend.

What class you plan on running?

I would probably be running in E Stock.

Do you want street tires you can run daily or do you have another set of wheels to use for AutoX??

I currently don't have a separate set of tires for Autox, but if I were to get back into it I would probably go that route.

Well if you had another set I'd say v710s or Hoosiers are your best bet. Hoosiers seem to be a little faster at their peak, but the v710s last longer and are more consistant from new to worn.

I'm not up on the top street tire performers, but I've heard Bridgestone has came out with a really good tire last year. I'm assuming Falkan Azenis are still a good choice.

well if you are running in a stock class you wouldn't be allowed slicks. so if you had to go with a street tire and on a separate set of race only wheels, i think the falken azenis rt-615s would suit you well. i know some of the top guys and gals at my local autox that run street tires run those. they might even be good for daily driving and racing on the weekends. but if you were really concerned about longevity you could go with any other azenis...

You can run DOT tires like Hoosiers or v710s but not true slicks.

ahhh i thought that you couldn't even run the DOT slicks i stock, i figured that bumped you up to a modified class.

If you are using same tires for Auto-X and Street the Hankook RS-2 are also a good choice as they have much better wet performance than the Falkens. Or another slightly more expensive choice would be the Bridgestone RE-01R its also a very nice tire. But like has been said if you can do some R compound tires the Hoosiers or Victo Racers are the was to go.

i have some 16' by 7 rims that i am thinking of using only for the track. i dont think i want to go dots. but i was thinking like a falkin alzenis. what would be the optimum size to by. 16 by 215? more?

^Thats probably about right. But if you go to TireRack you can look at the suggest rim width ranges on most tires.
