Just got back from my first HPDE (track day)!

And it was AWESOME!!!

Took the cop car down to PIR with the ORPCA guys again for an HPDE (High Performance Driver Education, a "track day"). John came with in his GTO and we were ready to go (new brakes on both cars).

Got 3 20 minute sessions driving (we were scheduled for 4 but by 830PM we and the cars were just done, so we called it and went home). I can hit 115 on the front stretch and 135 on the back!

There was one S197 GT Mustang there (all stock except for chrome wheels and faux Shelby stripes) and I passed him every session!

Of course I was in the Beginner/Novice group (with a GREAT instructor BTW!) and we were slower out there then the other groups (there's 4 "levels" and they run at separate times) but I was impressed with the 'Vic's abilities (passed some 944's, an air-cooled 911, a Caymen, and an Audi RS4) especially in the straights.

All in all is was a great day (I got to ride in my instructor's Spec E30 BMW and another instructor's NOVI-blown S2000!) and the old P71 performed flawlessly all day and then got us home in comfort with the A/C blowing ice-cold.

I was planning on running in the advanced groups this year, but no cars. =(

i need info.. i think i wanna do it! my brakes are up to the job now. whats with the tech inspection?

Make sure your battery's tied down, your fluids aren't leaking, your suspension is on tight, your pads have enough meat and your tires have enough tread (for street tires).

My personal checklist:

1. Flush Coolant
2. Flush Brake Fluid, fill up with one of the following 3 brands: Motul RBF600, Castrol SRF, Wilwood EXP 600
3. Oil Change if you haven't done it in awhile (20w50 if running the 13B)
4. At the track, add 1/2 oz per gallon 2-stroke oil if you're still using a rotary engine
5. Flush Clutch Fluid
6. Diff & Tranny Fluid changes if not done in awhile.

Pretty much make sure the car is as fresh as possible.

I would run Hawk HP+ if running a single set of pads and rotors for street and track. Hawk HPS/Porterfield R4-S are the bare minimum.

If running two sets, then use DD pads & rotors to get to the track and swap to Hawk Blues and blanks once you get to the track.

oh my car is good to go

they just require a formal tech inspection, but you have to get it done off track. i dont know who does those in portland, and how much they cost.
also the HPDE is run by porsche club and they have a weak website.

My local HPDE does tech inspections on-site.

I imagine you can just get the checklist off the website of your club and take it to a local mechanic. The stuff really isn't hard to pass.
