Wtf?

Hey guys, my dad just got a 83 FB with 12a. I think the motor locked up. It drove fine last week and started just a few days ago. When I tried to crank it today, nothing. Pulled the starter off and had it tested. Its good. Then I tried to turn the motor over with a ratchet and socket. I pulled the plugs out to make it easier and the starter is still off and the tranny in neutral. I cannot get it to turn over either direction by using the ratchet and socket. Any ideas of what has happened? Broken seal wedged? Bearing failure? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It shouldn't be real hard though with the plugs out right? I mean most engine I have seen can be turned over by hand. I will get a pipe this weekend to get more leverage tho.

Something is making it stick. I would say a piece of carbon is lodged in there. Either you will break it loose, or break a seal. Flip a coin!

So just turn it with a breaker bar... Should I try turning it backwards first?

I would try soaking it in MMO rather than risk breaking it if it is just some carbon.

How would I do that? Pour it in the spark plug holes?

Do NOT force it to turn unless you want to rebuild the engine. Read this before you do anything:

http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.ph...hreadid=281207

Have you considered taking the belts off and trying to turn just the crankshaft? Because usually cars only carbon lock from sitting for long periods. Maybe one of the other componants is locked up such as the air pump, alternator, a/c, water pump, etc.

I will look at that link. I have turned all the accessories and they all turn independently.

Woops!

Sorry Nate, I forgot the whole MMO thing. Yes put a cap full in the spark plug holes.

Wow, didn't see that one coming. Any damage to the flywheel?

if you can't turn it by hand, which should be fairly easy, and it is seized, you are better off tearing the engine down. forcing it to turn over may damage more internal parts than are already damaged. also turning it counter clockwise isn't terribly good for the engine.
