Here is a good example why NITRATE is a must for your side irons if lapped or surface ground .

In these pics you will se a side iron that has been lapped/surface ground without nitrate. It only has 1500 miles. Look at the extreme wear on the surface. It has the same surface wear as a 100k mile side iron. If you Lapp/ surface grind your plates??? Make sure you NITRATE people!!!

In the link below you will se a side iron that has been lapped/surface ground and nitrate. It only has 17000 miles. You can see that it has no measurable wear on the surface just visual marks made by the side seals and control rings. If you lap/surface grind your plates make sure you nitrate!!
