I know a guy who bought an 04 RX8 when it first hit the dealers lot. Even though it was affected by the low OMP output issue, he still got 108K before the engine tossed an apex seal. He premixed lightly with 2 stroke or MMO religiously. After having to buy the new engine, and getting the ECU update, he still premixes, but a bit higher quantity.
A couple weeks ago, I met a guy who just bought a 40th ann edition, and I suggested he start doing the premix as a supplement to the stock OMP, just to be safe. He had heard about premixing, but wasn't sure why it was suggested to him, until I explained the whole concept.
For the record, I still have the OMP on my FB, but I still add premix, just to be safe. The OMP can fail or leak, and not be detected until after the damage is done. For this reason alone, I strongly encourge all rotary owners to supplement the OMP with a premix, because once the damage has been done, it cannot be undone, without mega-cubic-dollars.
