There are differences in fuels. Additive packages and (sometimes) base fuel are the main differences.

As far as putting 87 in the 93 tank, that's rare, but definitely has happened. I've had it happen to me (not in the FD, luckily). I've mostly had it happen in my racecar tow vehicle ('74 Chevy Van with high-compression pistons in a 350 engine). Sure makes it tough to tow a 5000-lb trailer when you can only use about 1/3 throttle.
