The power to the coil can come directly from the battery with no problems. I did that for
awhile on my coils which are Ford TFI coils (from F150s at the JY). Ideally you would want to use a relay thats triggered by the ignition wire coming from the engine harness. The hot side of the relay connects directly to the battery, that way your not running all those amps through the old harness up to the ignition switch and back down. I suspect its something else you did or hit while doing "a little more work".
