What a good surprise! Can't wait to see how this turns out.

djmtsu 01-31-2011 01:17 PM

Question of the day:
Weber 45 DCOE or Dellorto 48?

Missed a deal on a Dellorto, 45 DCOE's are everywhere for a good price.

Also, swapping in an FB 3rd member is going to be more of a challenge than anticipated. The springs ride on the LCA's, instead of the axle tube. Also it has a panhard bar instead of a watt's linkage. Charles wants to strip the axle and transfer all the brackets to the FB axle tube. I guess there is no other way.

Measure twice, weld once I guess :)

ChaserAero 01-31-2011 02:59 PM

Mmmmm...this is gonna be fresh.

rx71king 01-31-2011 03:58 PM

what a rare car ..... vary cool......good luck...

djmtsu 01-31-2011 04:43 PM

Just picked up a Weber 45 DCOE with RB upper manifold. Need to either find a 13B 4 port lower, or just buy one new.

Now I need to get a fuel pump an regulator for this carb. Next purchase will be some essentials, most of which I can get from work, like a water pump, wires, coils, distributor cap and rotor, fuel and oil filters.

Next will be an aluminum radiator, and see if I still have my Escort E-fan. I also need an FC alternator, although I think Charles still has my old one. Once the engine is running, the chassis work begins. Then the body work/paint, and last interior.

TitaniumTT 01-31-2011 04:48 PM

How much of that do you expect to have done in time for DGRRXI?

All of it. Sooner if you get your ass out of bed and help. Slacker. :D

My5ABaby 01-31-2011 06:13 PM

Omg what a rust bucket...

J/k. I went and got to check it out and it's fucking pimpin'. I'm really loving the tiny rolling windows. I'm pretty sure the FC needs those on the gigantic b-pillars.

Ambitious, that's for sure.

Sure, I'll be there as soon as the FC is done to help out ;)

Well, since your FC is NEVER done, I guess I'll just see you at DGRR :)

I get by with a little help from my friends! Honestly, the most difficult part will be transferring all the brackets from the Cosmo axle to the FB axle.

Have you looked at Curry Enterprises, or Advanved Adapters, or even Rubicon Express to see if you can just buy the brackets?

You know, I had this thought a while ago, then completely forgot. I can probably get the brackets uber cheap from the off road shop here I used to work for. We stocked all that stuff.

TitaniumTT 02-01-2011 12:31 PM

Would be a lot easier than trying to cut everything off and it would save the axle too..... backups are generally a good thing ;)

djmtsu 02-01-2011 12:47 PM

Fo sho.

djmtsu 02-02-2011 09:41 AM

So, now I am considering putting RX-8 seats in it...front and rear.

TitaniumTT 02-02-2011 12:06 PM

I've got a bad back, and bad knees, and after spending 100+ hours in those seats, I never once got out with a sore back. I fucking LOVE those seats. My knees hurt, but that's becuase they just didn't move for hours on end and got locked up. I don't know about the rear, that might be a little wierd.... I'd keep the bench style in the rear which would mean some custom upholstering but would be pretty badass.

They are a tremendous PITA though. The amount of brackets, and mounts, and locating pins that need to come out are ridiculous... got plasma?

classicauto 02-07-2011 05:47 PM

OMG how sexy is that thing??

Not as sexy as the owner.:o16:

Not gonna happen. Our favorite Canuck is going to be hanging with the Mexicans while we're at DGRR.

Guess you'll just have to get TT drunk then...

TitaniumTT 02-07-2011 09:16 PM

Good luck... germans don't get drunk... we get even :suspect:

TitaniumTT 02-07-2011 09:19 PM

Oh, and canucks shouldn't go down to mehico... they're generally whiter and then therefore pull in more coin on the mkt..... Joe should reconsider his vacation plans.

Buggy 02-07-2011 10:32 PM

^ I second this.

djmtsu 02-08-2011 07:51 AM

Lol, I'm Swedish so I'm staying out of it :leaving:

Anyway, the Weber is here, the LIM should be here in a day or so. This weekend I am going to wire up the electronic dizzy and install the carb. Hopefully this thing will at least start this weekend.

Also, when I tore apart the engine I was a little concerned. I couldn't turn the main pulley, so I thought it might have seized. Poured some MMO into the plug holes, and let it sit for several days. Went out, put a ratchet on the main pulley bolt, and she turned right over. 3 good whooshes on all faces, so here's hoping it is good internally. At least that is a small victory.

Also, it might not have turned over the first time I tried because it might have been in gear. Maybe....

TitaniumTT 02-08-2011 09:51 AM

:willynilly: :chug:

Nah, if it was in gear it would still move slightly.... unless the tranny or rear end is siezed

What the fuck has my build thread turned into?

I don't know, but I like it.

FIBREMAZ 13 BEEF 02-09-2011 09:46 AM

Nice find man!
If you happen to come across anyone that sells new rear brake discs/rotors could you please pm the info as they are unobtanium down here in Australia.

Thanks
BEEFY

Sorry man, same deal here. I actually joined ausrotary just to see about finding parts and such, and it seems you guys are in the same boat we are.

For being a top selling car in Japan, they sure are hard to find spare parts for. That is why I am doing an FB rear axle swap.

PS- Get me a sweet ass dolphin tail muffler!!!! (seriously)

djmtsu 02-09-2011 02:23 PM

Small parts update:
-ordered rebuild kit and new soft mounts for the Weber
-ordered new gaskets
-new cap, rotor, wires, coils, plugs, filters
-RB LIM will be here tomorrow
-ordered a set of Pedders rear springs from Australia. ETA: 6-8 weeks. Hope they get here in time!

Buggy 02-09-2011 06:13 PM

Ya hopefully Pedders comes through in time for you. I know I had a bit of a delay getting my springs from them.

djmtsu 02-09-2011 08:44 PM

I'm hoping they come sooner than later. The girl said they were placing an order today, and that my springs were in stock in AUS. So, even though they give a 6-8 week lead time, she said they would more than likely be here in 4-5 weeks.

Fingers crossed!

djmtsu 02-11-2011 03:07 PM

LIM is here. Still waiting on the Weber rebuild kit and soft mounts. Jeff20B shipped me a dizzy yesterday.

My tranny is just fine.

joeywimsett 03-07-2011 09:33 PM

Rear end gears

Hey,

I own a 76 mazda cosmo and have been searching for different rear end gears, anybody know where to find some?

Not really anything. I did a ton of research over at ausrotary. That is why my plan was to scavenge the Cosmo suspension brackets and weld them onto a stripped GSL-SE axle.

Oh BTW, the car is gone. Neil (Kansei Rotary) came and picked it up yesterday. It is on its way to Michigan to be restored, instead of bastardized like I was going to do.

Thanks!

project86 05-09-2011 07:52 AM

Hey DJ i didnt see pics of this thing in the start of the thread anymore. Do you still have it? If so you should post a pic or two in my body work thread. Sounds like it might be a fun project :D

djmtsu 05-09-2011 09:15 AM

Nope. The Cosmo is in a new home. Someone who will restore it to its original glory.

It actually was picked up a week ago, and is now in Michigan. Kansei Rotary has it, and hopes to have it back on the road in the next year. He was elated with all the documentation on it and overall condition.

If i would have kept it, it was be a bastardized street machine. Because of its provenance, Neil wanted to restore it. So off it went!

I've seen his other Cosmo, it is gorgeous!

djmtsu 10-18-2012 01:55 PM

To be continued?

My5ABaby 10-18-2012 04:45 PM

Oh lord.
